I am in the process of getting a 1982 Honda 185s rebuilt that I had received in a trade. Got the carb re-built and got the motor running sweet. Have new front and rear bearings on order, and now I'm at the point that I need to get driveline in order. This trike didn't come with any chain, sprockets, or tensioners/guides. Now, I'm not sure exactly what i am missing as far as that goes for this trike. I got a new front sprocket, and I know i need the chain and rear sprocket, but as far as the tensioners and guides, I have no idea what I need or how the front sprocket bolts to the case/cover.

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1982-honda-atc185s/o/m1884#sch4937 you need parts 14 and three of number 17 for the front sprocket and as far as i can remember there is no tensioners for the chain just adjust the rear carrier till the chain is tight and it dosent come loose because there is no rear shock.

Is your cam sprocket used? Its always a good idea to run new with new.

Look at the where the cam sprocket goes. There will be a little space cut all the way around the grooves where a little clip would go. You slide your sprocket on the shaft following the grooves, then slide the clip on in those same grooves and spin the clip until it is not in those grooves, then you can bolt it to the cam sprocket. As far as I remember there are no guides and the tensioner is the axle.

Hows the paint on the frame? Looks nice, now you need the left side engine cover.

Ok, so that clip (#14 on the cut sheet) is what I am missing to get the cam sprocket on right, makes sense now guys thanks. I understand now that you can adjust the rear carrier to loosen/tighten the chain.

So basically the chain goes from the cam sprocket to the rear sprocket with no guides or anything kinda like a bicycle?

Yes, I bought a new cam sprocket, they weren't really any more expensive then a used ebay one. I painted the frame and motor/other parts myself, stripped the whole thing down to the bare frame and am now in the rebuild process. This is my first actual "build". Left side cover and recoil starter I'll probably be getting last, as they are the most expensive. For now, I've been starting it by wrapping an old dog leash around the pulley and yanking it that way. Not the safest method but it works.

Yes 14 is what you need to hold the sprocket on and basically there are no guides or tensioners its like a bicycle as you say. Good luck on the rebuild!

Thanks brother. That just clarified a lot of confusion on my end. Another 100 bucks in new parts and this thing will be rideable.

OK, one more question....

I've been looking at rear sprockets,,, and saw there is a holder/dampner... is that needed or does the sprocket bolt right on to the holder that slips over the axle?
