Sounds like you need to clean out your carb. Give us some more details on the trike. Like has it been siting, work done to last etc.

If it has been sitting for a year it probably is your carb needs to be clean. If it was the stator you most likely wouldn't be able to start it at all (No spark). I would just try to clean the carb first befoire you rebuild it cause it you got it to run most likely it is not that bad just some small debris in one of the jets.
Good kuck and let us know how it works out.

It's kind of funny - I for years felt like a carburetor bonehead. Truth is there are very few parts in there that can wear out, seals get cracked and jets get plugged but overall nothing in a carb isn't fixable. And if you simply get an EBAY carb for 50$ you are looking at the same problems. My little 10yr old cousin just asked me to fix his flat tire and I took care of it. When I went back to his house to try it out it wouldn't run right and I asked him when he rode it last, he said about 9 months ago. I took it home and took off the fuel bowl and it looked ok, but as soon as I unscrewed a couple jets I saw the gel-like gas clogging them all up. I didn' buy a single part and his XR70 is all set!!
If you don't know jets are just small orifices that meter or control the amount of gas to a particular circuit. They just about all thread out and are easily cleaned.
You do need a manual and some carb cleaner and compressed air helps too - but just about an hour and that SX will run fantastic!! There are very few parts that will fall out or become airborn while you work on it. Ask all the questions here you wish because there are some great people here but if you get in a jam email me at ATCThomas@TMLP.com and I'll be galad to help - I am not an expert but having owned 5 250SX ATC's I know that carb inside and out.
I can't even think of one of the 30 plus ATC's, ATV's or dirtbikes I have owned that ever needed a "new" carb.
