Here is a fun story for you guys on this. Found a 1986 350x on craigs list for $250 non-running, so I called the guy on it and got the low down on it, he says it is in ruff shape and the back story on how it quit running. Basically he had law issues with an officer that didn't know the law. After things cleared up, he went to start it and it wouldn't start. Anyway, I shot up there right away to look at it with my uncle. Well he was right, poor shape, worn out bearings, stainless steal airbox cover, exhaust welded on (extremely poorly), font tire I can nearly see the air in, etc. I messed around kicking the engine over a little with the switch off to check compression (decompression cable missing) and it didn't feel like much there. I noticed the tank was plastic.... and looked inside.... hmmm nearly bone dry. So I pay the man, write up a bill of sale, got it loaded, and used the tip trick to get a little gas in the carb and kicked her with the switch on. It fired right up and was idling perfect, so I reved it expecting it to run lean and pop some so it didn't sound so good... yea it reved pretty cleanly too. The guy didn't really say much except that it looks like I fixed it lol. Kind of feel bad firing it up right infront of him like that, I just wanted to get a good pop out of it since I was excited to finally get a 350x. I'm thinking it felt like it didn't have compression from the lefter sticking or something, now I can stand on it on the compression stroke and it holds me for a few seconds.
Anyways... the parts list I need. I'm kind of tossed up between fixing it up fairly well, or fixing it "good enough". Either way it is a rider and already had it buck me off and I hit my tail bone. 350x is a world of difference comming from the shaft drive family (250es, 200es, 250sx), and even in it's poor shape has more power than my 350 warrior had... I think overall it is a good buy, but too much to really fix up nice. I'm keeping my eye out for another one in my area, and if I find one, I'll probably put this one down as a parts machine.
Things I will 100% need
Full rear brake system (master, slave, lines, pads, and mounting bolts needed)
exhaust pipe (full pipe, wouldn't mind getting a cobra if the price is right) - current one is welded + has huge leaks in the header pipe
Might need a head (exhaust pipe is welded to the bolts that hold it on, so hopefuly not, but it is leaking there too :()
Things I might be interested in
engine mount bolts (i have spares from a 250x quad, not sure if they will work, but heard they might)
front brake reservoir (might have one that will work from my parts 250x)
Front tire - factory size is 23.5 x 8 x 11 (if i remember correctly), the tire on it is 23 tall and 11 for the rim. I'm watching for a fair priced 23-34 inch tire that will fit.
case saver
Stuff I already bought, if your interested in knowing...
front shocks/forks (ebay set + rebuild kit)
air box lid (bought full box + tubes via ebay special)
Full headlight assembly (I have one good headlight, other is damaged as well as the plastic broken pretty bad. Rubber Hold-ons are good) - I might just make a fog light work (27w led)
rear axel bearings (nuts were loose when I got it, still has a bit of play)
front hub bearings
And here is the long list of small issues it will still have....
Compression release cable missing
Clutch appears to be nearly worn out (lever is nearly pointing stright back)
Left engine case cover has chain damage + a poor man's rtv fix and is leaking slowly
Lights currently don't get power to them, have to look into the cause yet, hopefully just a fuse/disconnected wire
Rear plastics are "ok" but do have a couple of spots that are broken, I think where they are supported.
Seat is a duct tape special
Rear grab bar is custom made, but is too short to be useful

Photos I have of it are stuck on the internal card of my camera (no usb cable), poped in a card and took photos to read on my media card reader of it currently. I kind of went ahead and took some quick photos of the others in the family. I also have a TTR225 Yamaha dirt bike packed away in the pole barn along with my dad's toys, 680 Rincon, 450 Foreman, and 680 Big Red. If there is interest, I could show some photos of the 85 "Quad-z" and the blaster with the 500 twin. Both need work though. Sadly, half of my machines have to sit in the weather till I get my own place + a pole barn.

You can see the bent fork in this pic. I have another set from ebay I'm going to rebuild (and learn something new!)
156394
Must change out these tires, pretty sure I can half blame them for my tail bone hurting (1/2 donut then grabbed and threw my off)
156393
As you can see, both halfs of the exhaust is welded.... and leaks!
156392
The head side, the right pipe is split on the inside and there is a weld long that but isn't helping at all.
156391156390
Some fancy metal work from a past owner
156389156388156395
You can see it has been into before, and the bottom part of the side cover has a small leak that I need to either patch up or change out the side cover.

And the other machines...
I'll start with the 1985 250sx "Big Red". She needs a bit of work, but runs/rides well. Rear fenders are welded on........ Probably going to look for a cheap set of used fenders to throw on it and a seat and sell her. Yes... the wiring is cut into sadly, going to fix up the splices properly though.

The orignal three wheeler I owned and had the fun abusing. 1984 200es. Got it just about how it looks now besides the rear rack bends and the torn seat. Rear tires I got below the store's cost at around $30 each new, don't look that great but does pretty well.
156403
This one came from the batch with the 200es and the ATC 90. This 85 250sx one my dad owned first because the shift pattern is "normal". He needed money so I ended up with it. Probably the best shape three wheeler I have currently besides the broken fender and a bent foot peg.
156401156402
A 250es 1985 I'm pretty sure, has a grumblely rear end, replacement is just to the left of the rear tire (the blue rag is stuffed in the end of it).
156404
The poor ATC90, been sitting around inside for about 5 years that I have owned it, and a good 5 years before that by the last owner. Gas tank is rusty inside, but outside looks pretty good. Seat has a seam tear, and the fenders have a crack along them but not broken off. Last owner claims the engine was rebuilt before it sat. When I first got it, it ran well, but the rust plugged the carb and never went with it any further.
156406
Here are the sad remains of the 1999 350 warrior, my dad owned it for most of it's life and saw a very hard life and tons of mud. Carb is messed up, trans grumbles, engine smokes, no brakes, and cracked front fender. Probably going to get a 650 twin off my dad to throw on the frame at some point in time.

1987 TRX250X I'm working on fixing this up. $200 special with an engine with a bad top end. Bought a 2nd 250x for extra parts to fix it up. Plastics are in pretty good shape but painted :(.
156397
Yes... I do plan to get these machines inside at some point in time.... there is around 100 of them 20 foot lengths...
156407
I got basically a hole 350x minus the engine I also fixed up the gas tank, took all the dents smoothed it out and added bondo and finally painted it white and covered it with clear coat. I'm going to sell it if your interested? If not I'll throw it on eBay 156410 156409 156408

Not interested in the tank even though mine has gas stains from a missing seal.
Pm me what kind of prices you would be looking at for the whole headlights/ headlight assembly (i can see the sun fading, it is fine for me as a rider), front tire, and complete exhaust.
What is the story on the engine? I could use a left side cover and the complete clutch basket if your parting it out too, or if I can run across a NOS engine for fairly cheap (heard they go for something like $650).

Got a complete engine + aftermarket exhaust coming, so all I need are brakes, and I was directed to a thread about interchangeable brakes on the cheap :).

Make sure u have the og mounting bracket for the rear breaks when trying to use a newer calipe
ive read that u can use a 400ex header iirc and maybe the whole exhaust but if your getting a aftermarket one then theres need to worry about it i guess

IMHO I would part that 250es/sx out. The one with the car tires on it. When I get them in that bad of shape, its not worth my time to actually get them running. I hate wiring being screwed with, I learned this at a very young age from my dad always cussing at his BSA's and triumph's. They were a real headache back then and still are.
The 200es looks as though it has good potential though!

I put the car tires on it from another machine to make it easier to roll, the tires with to my cuz for his atc250r lol. The engine's shift fork was broke, replaced it and now it rides well besides the leaky gas tank (jb weld let go). Besides the wiring being cut into and put together wrong and the hideous white wire for the push button start button, and finally the big red plastic swap, it is a solid machine. I'm sure I would get more parting it out though sadly. The 200es is a solid machine, I started off using it pretty hard for work which is where the rack and seat damage came from. It always had the top end bathed in the leaked out oil. Local listings go up to $800 for this model, and I have $1000 into it between the 200es and the atc90. Since I got the 250 big reds and sx machines, I never looked back at the 200es, so I want to sell it, just not sure if it will be in pieces, how it sits, or fixed up some. I saw one on craigslist in better shape than mine go for $500.
@badass350x
I noticed that spring when I first looked at it. Looks like a bad setup, but oddly it does shift well like that. Haven't gone any farther, but my guess is the clutch is worn out, and that is how they (now me) is getting the last little bit of life out of it. After I swap out the engine/exhaust, I'm going to dig into the engine and fix the left side cover and check it out better. Hopefully there isn't a lot wrong with it and is effective to just fix the engine for another play toy or backup.
@d_b3ck
Sadly, it never came with the mount at all. Master and reservoir are there, but the hose looks pretty shot and the reservoir is toast like the front one (level check window leaked all the fluid out I guess). I have quite a bit of reading and searching to do for an interchange on the brakes. I know brakes are a 100% must, even if I only get the rear working for now.
@the weld posts
Yes, the welds don't even go into the metal, no sanding or anything for prep. Thing I can't understand is #1 WHY!?!?!?, but 2nd I don't see damage to the headers besides the split, the part that goes in the head appears fine, the plates that hold it on look ok from what I can see, and they swapped out the studs for bolts in the head.
The funny thing with all of these welds.... I have 2x 250es engines done up the exact same way..... needed parts out of one, so I got to find out the one way bearing was bad in the clutch , so maybe that is why the engine was for parts, no clue on the 2nd, it is more complete.
