picked up a pretty clean 84 250R this weekend, looks like someone landed hard, bent the axel, took it apart and then parked it in the garage for ages, it's all original, bone stock and the engine sounds perfect. is the has the swing arm in it, but the axle carrier and axle are missing. Some one in vegas has a whole 85 250r rear end for sale, I was hope'n it would bolt in.
I can't believe I got yet another (8th) atc, good thing is most of them are running.

In case you hadn't noticed, the 84 R is right hand drive while the 85 R is the more standard left hand drive. The answer to your question is no, it will not fit. As a matter of fact, there isn't really a whole lot of parts that are compatible between those two trikes.

Only the 84 swingarm, or an aftermarket 84 only swingarm will fit. 83 swinger will fit I believe, but shock linkage and mounts are different, so you'll need to use an 84 swinger and 84 shock linkage

ah, thanks, never really noticed the rhd/lhd output shaft...but then again I have never owned a 85/86 R. so next question, I do have a solid 82 with a tired motor...will the 84 motor bolt into the 82?

It absolutely will. The only difference in those motors is the shifter shaft.

buy a new carrier on ebay and a buy a new durablue axle. end of story. or have a new swingarm designed to run a quads carrier and swingarm like a 300ex.
the 1st option is cheaper and quicker. look to spend about $650 for 1st option for NEW parts not 30 year old stuff.

Or you could find a stock axle for around 100 bucks, and a stock carrier around 50. I believe the 84 axle is just a little wider, so try to find one of those if possible over the 83. I would keep the 1st Gen R whole, so after you get the 84 fixed, you just need a liquid to complete the collection. The 2nd gen 83-84 was ages ahead of the first gen, the frame and suspension and handling was suprisingly good, and if you use the 85-86 R front forks on the 83-84, it makes for one heck of a jumping machine. A good place to look for parts is over at air foolers dot com. Lots of characters over there, and they like to help a brother out.

cool, thanks for the help guys, I think I will try to source the parts and get it back together...as much as I love some of my modded trikes, having a bone stock 84 R with low miles would be fun...and better than butchering my 82R.
in other trike news, at my shop my boss and I resurrected a 82 suzuki ALT50 3 wheeler for his 3 yo daughter. I must admit that little micro 3 wheeler is much faster than I though it was going to be....I should be worried thou...a 3 year old that grew up in a dyno/motorcycle shop on something like that! she is already a daredevil on the modified electric quad we made for her.

if you go stock axle i would atleast buy a ne billet carrier. alot of the oems are really worn. it think its safe insurance to keep you rollin good.
