Are the threads on the tri-z crank where the idler gear sits, is it regular threads (lefty loosey, righty tighty), or reverse threaded?
Yes they are regular left-loose-right-tight. The reason it's so hard to get off it 1: the nut has that nylon insert, and 2: it has somewhere near 90 ft/lbs of torque on it.

what size socket is it? 27mm?
I hate to admit this but I did it half assed, I do not know what size it is. I used a standard size, 1 1/4 I believe, to get it off. Only socket I had to fit and it worked for taking it off, putting it on and torquing it down.
