Steering Head Noise

I was riding my 83 185s a little while ago and I started hearing a popping noise in my steering head. I just replaced my front hub bearings if that tells you anything. And there is no slack in the steering head so I was wondering does it start to pop before it gets slack and goes out or is there something that I am just missing?

i would check the stearing stem bearings upper and lower ones!!?

Yea I am going to check them but there is a ride this weekend where I live so I am not going to check till after. Has anyone had this happen to them before and could anything catastrophic happen?

grease is wonderful thing. 10 to 1 the bearings are dry
