The 85. LOL Are you talking about the 85 and the 86? You typed 85 tri-z vs 85 tri-z.

I've got an 85, which is a 5-speed. I believe I've heard it said that '86 models are 6-speeds. Not knowing the top gear ratios off the top of my head, I would guess that the '86 might be a touch faster at the top end...

Just my theory.

The 6 speed is highly overrated. Ive got an 85, but put an 86 motor in it, which is better for trails, but on the MX track it was a disadvantge. I really cant say whether or not top speed is affected, and if it is, its not worth mentioning. The 86 gears are a lot closer together than the 85, which required a lot more frequent shifting on the track. I do prefer the 86's closer for gearing trail riding though. As far as the rest of the engine, they are indentical. With two shafts w/gears, shifting drum, and shifting forks, you can easily put the 86 tranny in your 85 cases.
