hey guys i was riding with my buddy bradley today, we saw a HUGE steep hill and he dared me to go up it ... me and the r never back down from a dare:naughty: so i let it rip and up i went i clicked into second gear about halfway up and she kicked side ways and i clipped a rock with the front brake caliper(at the time i thought it was the tire) and i dont have my rear brakes set up yet . i guess it broke the mounting bolts on it and nocked the caliper off . didnt see it and got to the top turned around and started my decent, at the bottom was a 90 degree turn i knew could make it if i was carefull... reached for the brake and holytrailpro theres no brakes! at the bottom i was hanging off the side trying to make the corner. An i didnt make it... threw the prickers i went and over the unknown log pile and off a 4 foot drop off went me and my 250r i was more worried about the bike then me but it took it like a champ few scratches and a busted caliper mount . my buddy had to tow me out with the 200x  but what can ya do! will post pics of damage put my toothe threw my lip and got all scratched up !!! was a trailpro day!

And the moral to the story is...make sure your equipment is in proper working order especially if you like to push your luck!! Been one too many threads in here of discussion from members that feel brake function isn't mandatory and that their riding skills will take them home safely!!

I bet you will be in the 'FOR' column next time this discussion comes up.

Glad you weren't hurt to badly..at least you and your R survived to remember this day and learn the lesson it taught you.

Class dismissed...

Well, you just made me feel a little better about my weekend fiasco. I thought I had it bad. I knew I didn't have any brakes, but I was coming down a hill and thought I was in second. I was gonna down shift to 1st to slow down, but I was already in 1st so I ended up in neutral. Bike took off (headed for something like you went off), so I swerved and ran it into a tree to stop myself. Didn't sound very good, but didn't hurt either lol. Hope you and your bike heal fast.

I would think that you are old and wise enough to know better but I guess some people just don't learn as fast.lol!

Damn man, I'm pushing 30 but that is a long way from 67. I was riding without brakes because I don't have brakes at the moment lol. Buddy said let's go ride, so I went riding. Not gonna stay at home for something as little as no brakes lol. I'm riding a 200 in the woods, so it wasn't that big of a deal. Just lost count lol. Kinda funny though that you would talk to somebody like that that you thought was 67 years old though. My daddy would have slapped the taste out of my mouth.

interesting. Cant say I HAVEN'T riden without brakes in the past on my old 250sx when I was first starting out, but a set of 15$ barke pads/shoes can ruin your day. Nothing feels as good as going for a ride with funcitonal equipment and being safe lol

No problem man, if I sounded like a jerk I apologize. I didn't know how to take your post. Kinda thought your were calling me stupid lol. You wouldn't be far off if you were though.

Haha- I don't know. I'd probably just think a little faster and get back up into first lol. That was really the only issue I had all day. We probably topped out at 10 miles an hour- just weaving through trees looking at deer sign and stuff.

A near miss wasn't enough for you to see how quick shlt happens I guess??

Interesting!! I guess we don't all learn things at the same speed..

Not trying to dis' you just an observation.

I know this isn't going to be the most poplular post but here goes. Back when we were teenagers my cousin and I both had 1982 ATC200's. Just the plain 200 (not S, M, E, etc). We couldnt' keep rear brakes on those things for anything. We couldn't seem to keep sand out of the drum which would tear the shoes up. And I guess our drums were oversized because the brake cam would actually get suck on end or damn near go over center (this was before ebay got popular). We would weld those cams up so the shoes would open up wider. That would work until we got sand in them again. lol. And one time when I actually had brakes my brake lever caught a bunch of weeds and snapped my cable. Just couldn't win with rear brakes on those things and its pretty much the same machine Popeye has. We usually had good front brakes though.
About 4 years ago a bunch of us were out riding Harleys when one of the guys went down hard. He actually had to be taken away in an ambulance and wanted us to take care of his bike. Well the front brake lever and rear foot lever were both broken off. One of our guys was like- you can't ride this, theres no brakes. I told him I'm used to riding without brakes. lol. I rode it about 5 miles through town (suburb of St. Louis) with no brakes at all. I even had to stop at a stop sign at the bottom of a hill. To stop I pulled the clutch and hit the kill switch, then released the clutch lever as my brake, it was enough to drag the back tire if I had to. Other than stopping at the stop sign at the bottom of the hill, I only had to do that one other time. The rest of the time I just coasted to a stop.

Easy there, Jadley..you have a right to your opinion, but we have to respect that not everyone thinks the way we do!!

Just don't want to see another shltstorm thread that ends up with feelings hurt and people banned for bad behavior..

I'm not gonna shoot back lol. The situation was just taken out of context. Maybe it was the way I put it, but it wasn't that big of a deal. 99.9% of the bicycles and machines I have ridden didn't have brakes. I like to have fun and a couple of safety issues ain't gonna get in my way lol. I'm more cautious than most. Hell, I had just put brake pads on it. I got to figure out what is going on with my cable though. Like Blown said, my drum was full of sand and the brakes never worked that good anyways. I'm not a dare devil on these things- just like to take "Sunday strolls". I don't think creeping through the woods with no brakes is half as crazy as hitting 65-75 mph down a drag strip (I know, I know- I'm building a 300r). It's funny how people question your intelligence though. Anyways, keep it coming. I'm a big boy lol.

Im about to get yelled at.

Just got a neglected 85 250r for cheap, and waited for 5 days for parts. Did not get to ride her besides the place I bought it, which was in the city, on the road. SO, new parts on, brake are off for rebuild, and I took her for a spin. Geared fully, knee braces, chest protector, jersey and pants, gloves helmet goggles. Had no issues riding with out brakes. Rode like i normally would, within my ability. You're going to crash whether you have full gear or none, brakes or not. Its all chance. No brakes just increases your chances for failure. But if you have half an idea and don't ride like a hotdog you'll be fine.

Bottom line. Don't do it.

'Chance' is the rock on the trail that wasn't there when you rode that same trail yesterday..

Whether you run into it or not because your brakes are screwed is on you, not 'chance'!

Should I use your logic and tell my wfie there is a 'chance' my kids and I will come home safely from a ride??

Tell you what, I'll just keep fixing my stuff when it breaks..fuk 'chance'!!

Bottom line. Don't do it.

Then you say this..your logic is really confusing. Don't do what?
