HELP!!! honda atc 350x rear end

I have been in the process of converting my 85 rear end back to the correct 86 style rear end that it should have. I have got it all back together right up to were the axle lock nut goes on and then is held on by a snap ring. I can't get my lock nut to break loose, the bike was pretty much a junker when i got it, the lock nut was not on tight when i got it, just loose so it was easy to get off. I just took of the snap ring, there is also not a snap ring collar like the manual shows. I am really confused I just want to ride this dang thing i have been working on it for months and it has been fighting me every single step of the way, but so far i've been winning. I can't for the life of me figure out this rear end though i don't see how the lock nut keeps anything tight or even stays on all that i can see is the little bitty snap ring. Will somebody please help me i would love some close up pictures of a 86 rear end and a explanation of how it works. thanks
