Glad to see this trike finally get snatched up. Now get those rear fenders off and let's see exactly what you have. I think it's a Hi Performance ATC frame, but, I could be wrong. If it's a non-reed engine, it could be an R5.

I found this brochure and this is definitely the frame, it is rigid no suspension. Tonight I will get the fenders and tank off and take some pics.

Ah so Mr. Clean was the one who got to it before me. ha.. oh well its def in the right hands! So is it a RD350 or 400? Thanks man, it is an act of the trike GOD's that I own it, it was sold and I had 24 hours of the "stinging" feeling of something you miss on c-list. Then it showed up at my door and I am forever grateful to that person. I will try to determine what RD motor it is tonight.

As far as my plans for it, it is going to be built to look like the era in which it came. The silver color on the fenders and tank is supposed to be red, I am guessing some type of candy red, with silver base. I want to recreate the pinstriping and all of the old school stuff. I have so many builds going on I may only be able to in the near term get it cleaned up and start assessing what it needs. I would like to get it running for sure!! The motor goes thru all the gears, I think the problem with shifting was a loose shifter so I should be able to get it going. It also had some wore out 21/12/8 16 paddle tires which I am now on the hunt for!!

Mike, are you going to leave this baby as is or are you going to try and give it a little more ooomph (cylinder boring, piston, reeds, etc)?

There are some goodies available, but nothing like what once existed. Reeds of course. DG Gold heads. The pipes on these were sort of custom with the frame, but there are people who are presently making custom 2 stroke pipes. Of course porting. Different fuels. The hardtail more than likely dates it pre 81 and maybe earlier. Hi Performance frames, especially the hardtail would fit many a different powerplant. They sort of used one basic frame and just used different engine mounts to fit different engines in the basic frame. There were hollow chromoly rear axles available. There were 185s axles available and the real early frames used 90/110 rear axles. The rear brakes could vary depending on the year of the frame as well. My suspension r5/rd trike frame uses the rd front disc brake as the rear brake. Most didn't have a front brake. I've seen custom solid front ends as well as Hi Performances' own front suspension frame set up as well as Honda atc front ends adopted for use as well. Usually takes atc90 based rear fenders and mounts, but often used a fiberglass aftermarket rear fender. Have seen atc90 fiberglass copy rear fenders and aftermarket "wide" rear fenders as well as homemade fiberglass rear fenders. Paint jobs were wide open and ran the gamut from plain to downright show worthy. These frames were the early hot rods of the sand.

Spent a little time last night doing some work. It is in fact an RD400, and it has reeds. Set it next to a 70 and a 250r for size and height comparison.

That is pretty awesome. Wonder why they went with such a small kicker as compared to yours? I would think that would suck to start unless its electric and that's just a backup.

Nice score! I've always loved the sound of the RD. My Dad still has his first Tricky Dick's conversion at his shop which is a RD350. It's on my long list of things to restore.

yagerb, that is a factory stock kicker. The one on the aftermarket frame was bigger so you had enough to pull start the trike. I think most peoples' legs are stronger than their arms. There were 2 or 3 places that sold trike "conversion" kits to turn a streetbike into a dune trike. They even had kits for the cb750 hondas!

That thing really must be nuts. That small and a 400cc 2-stroke twin!

bkm
07-06-2012, 08:41 PM
I'd be curious to see how it runs also. I used to sand drag with a guy who had a Kawasaki 500 triple 2-stroke conversion and it wasn't all that impressive. The gearing in the transmission wasn't made to haul around that extra weight and tall paddle tires. But the RD engines might be a little better.

I had a buddy with a late 70's RD400 and it was one of the funnest bikes I have ridden. It felt like a Banshee on 2 wheels.

Living proof of a time when men were men and front suspension was for sissies

Having owned an RD350 I’m betting that when that thing hits the power band he’ll feel like his chest hairs are being torn off.

The tank is going to be the centerpiece on that one. I'm thinking a old school mural with a hot blonde, some DD's, aztec style riding a komodo dragon.

Ha, that would make 5 trikes. I am not yet set on selling this one, and I have a commitment to another local triker if it sells he gets first shot at it.

Deep Threat is just sitting in the garage awaiting its come up to "former glory" as these projects were ahead of it.

what kind of front number plate is that on the 200X?

I had an old friend drop me by an old frame for a vented maier that was missing the mesh. I bought a 5$ paint roller screen from the hdwr store and cut the fame off that and then plastic-riveted that screen to the maier frame...layed black number stickers on a sheet of white plastic I cut out of a 5 gal bucket, traced around with a thick sharpie, cut the plastic with a jigsaw outside of that line, applied the numbers and VOILA!.......plastic numbers for my plate with black centers and white border.

Long story short, that plate looks like a lot less trouble than what I did.

heres what it looks like:

Mr. Clean
05-02-2014, 02:02 PM
It is a Preston Petty number plate. They fetch a pretty good penny and the one you made looks pretty good.

I have that bike in my shop now. And yes it is forsale and will be traveling across the country shipping free this October . I had a post about it when I got it . I got it in Phoenix for the motor to do a banshee killer but just haven't got around to it .

Mine is more motorcycle looking. Same front end shorter frame . Mine is yellow and black and my fenders are long gone before I got it. I looked for my post but couldn't find it. I am in new York now but am going back to Vegas in June and I could get you some pics. Unless I can find the thread it had to be in 2011. When I fired it up it sound like a Porsche . My pipes run up and under the seat not like yours down under the frame. I'll look harder for the post I put up. Now that I looked at your pics the pipes run the same just mine seam like they run closer to the tank ( legs). I'll look for that post.

I wanna hear this thing run sooo bad. I love the RD conversion bikes! Definitely my favorites of all the conversions

rg97
05-02-2014, 09:52 PM
More of a custom framed drop-in than a conversion, but still they are awesome.
My dad and my uncle both had (have) one, a 400 and a 350. My dad sold his years ago but my uncle still has his. Hasnt fired it up in years, but it is a beast from what I hear. Upwards of 13,000 RPM and close to 100 mph. I saw it a few weeks ago, red fenders, red tank. Hand-made chambers, wide front end, custom CNC triples made by my uncle with forks from an old cr75? cr85? not sure. I was amazed at how small the bike was, I mean, I was expecting a taller R or 350X type bike but they're actually about the size of a 90. That has to be one heckuva ride. Kicking myself for not grabbing any pics of it now when I was there.

Sorry for getting off topic

C.J
05-03-2014, 12:59 AM
Very true. I just used the first word that came to mind lol it's a conversion from a 90 to a twin cylinder 350cc pinger! Lmao

I really, really like this machine though. More so than others I've seen. Must be the Amerithons on the rear making it look ready to pitch side ways WFO around a big sweeper with that fatty front locked out and laying halfway off the bike with your wrist locked and dropped. Plus it's a hard tail. Way cool. Waaayyyy too cool. Hysteria kinda cool, man!
