1985 tecate vs 1986-87 tecate

Ok, I will post this in the right section this time. So the question was: Has any of you motorheads ever cloned a 85 tecate into a 86-87 tecate? I have an opportunity to buy an 85 tecate, but much way prefer the look of the 86-87 tecate. So is it possible to to switch the gas tanks, mount the split radiator and front and rear fender from an 86-87 tecate onto a 85 tecate? Any advice,
concerns, thoughts would be appreciated.

Your probably better off trying to add the 86' parts to the 85'. They are 2 totaly different Trikes.

I responded in the other thread, but I'll reply here too.

It would be sooo much more work to turn an 85 into an 86 clone that it's not even worth it. By the time you spent the money to get the radiators, plastics, triples, tank, wheel, etc, etc, etc, you could just buy an 86. Not to mention the only bike I've seen on here that was an 85 Tecate turned into an 86 looked like a big pile of doo-doo. The 85 Tecate is a totally different machine than the 86. You buy one, or you buy the other.

Embrace the '85. They are one of the coolest looking trikes out there if they are done right but they can look hideous if done wrong. A properly trimmed front fender, number plate, and a set of 18" Fast Trekkers really set these bikes off.

I miss mine and wish I would have never sold it.

So I went and looked at this 85 tecate today and she's not in bad shape. I played super uninterested and he dropped the price to $700.00. It has a few issues like stitched fenders all round and no radiator screen, but thats all cosmetic. Mechanically, she'll need bearings and sprockets and chain and a new carb and cable, one front shock seal is leaking. She fired up and i did a rip around the block. Guess $700.00 is a good
deal. what do you think?

Without seeing it $700 doesn't sound too bad. Like you said, expect to go through the entire machine. People forget that these things are 25 years old. Figure out about how much it's going to cost you to go through everything and then double that figure if you want a nice dependable machine.

listen to fabio I droped about 3500 on mine but that was total tear down powdercoat, new plastics...etc and imo the simplicity of the 85 out weighs the benefits if any of the 86+

You're splitting hair and I ner actually totaled the bills but It's well over 3K just off the top oif my head and that conservative.... I'll bring my pressure washer to TF 13 and clean it then..

I agree with fabio that the simplicaty of the 84-85 engine can't be beat,however as far as handling the first gen t3's don't even compare IMO. Both are fun and I don'nt think you could go wrong with either. Just don't forget to put a stator in the tool kit.
