Ian pretty sure everybody has there reasons on why they chose to have trikes and not quads.what made you fall in love with trikes and not quads? my simply answer is that I grew up riding ATC all my life I rarely drove a quad and when I went riding I use to get made fun off cause I rode 3 wheelers?. But it wouldn't matter I would still blow them away and still doing so 27 yrs later !:w00t:

I can't speak for others, but I may have been influenced by a Ménage à trois at some point. If Dr. Ruth ever does an episode on this we may learn more.

For me it was the first thing I owned. Think i was around 13 when we pulled an '84 ATC 70 out of the barn at the farm, and got it running the same day. From then on I was hooked. Now I've got an '86 200x and really would like a 350x.

I got my 1st trike at 9, rode a quad a few years later and hated it. They're too big and heavy, at least this one was. As mentioned before, quads are for work. The only things with 4 wheels that go offroad for fun use are the TRX R Quads, and stuff similar to my 150cc GY6 Powered Go Kart.

I currently own trikes along with quads and have owned a couple of bikes in the past..

I always have fun whether I'm riding on 3 or 4. But what makes the trikes a little more appealing to me is several little things.. Namely the general bad-assness of them, nostalgia, rarity of them, and maybe all the attention they get when riding in a public place. Nothing strikes up conversation with strangers like parking your trike at your favorite trailside establishment for a burger and fries.

Plus, I've always been the kind of person who likes to go against the grain with alot of things...

Probably very similar reasons hot-rod enthusiasts love to build/own vintage hot-rods.

When I was a kid in the mid 80s I originally wanted a dirt bike, just like my friend's yamaha 80. I hounded my parents for years but they always said they were too dangerous. Then I "compromised" and tried to sell them on 3-wheelers. I told them they were much safer and eventually they gave in. Now I'm glad they didn't let me get a dirt bike because I got absolutely hooked. I loved sliding it around corners, hanging off the side with rocks flying. I quickly traded up, going from a 185, to a 200x, and finally to a Tecate. My parents wouldn't let me start with a 250; I had to work my way up. Over the 90s I got out of the sport but came back to it in the early 2000s. Now I've got a 250R, a Tecate, and a Tri-Z. I think a lot of guys are into them because they got hooked on them as kids. I'm not a big car person but I think it's the same with guys that buy and restore muscle cars.

i like the way they looked from the 1st 1986 honda tv comerical was the 86 350x parked in front of a quad on the sand dunes. from where i wanted one. after i road an autox i was hooked. theres somthing about being able to power slide these things on a dime. i dont mind quads but i need to own a 3wheeler to feel compete.

For me, I started on 2 wheelers back in the early 70s. grew up riding and racing them in the SoCal deserts. Then moved to 3 wheelers before quads even came about. When they did...sorry, but those who can ride, ride (2 or 3 wheels), those who can't...drive (4 wheels). I like to ride, not drive.

As an added point; when I come into a section of whoops in 6th gear, I know that if I do everything right, I'm gonna cook through them, but if I do something wrong, I'm gonna eat s__t. On a quad, regardless of whether I do everything right or not, chances are I'm gonna cook through them...where's the challenge in that? I ride to push myself. There's nothing to push on the quad; you point it where you want it to go and it goes. Boring.

I agree and plus Atc are EXTREMELY EASIER to load in a van or truck vs a quad and take less room 1for Atc 0 for quad lol

I forgot to mention I always like the attention I get when riding my 3wheeler. everybody's in a circle talking about quads and stuff they get to me and ask what do you ride? I reply "oh just a Atc there eyes open and say what? Oh you mean a 3 wheeler" and I say yes then they say aren't those things dangerous and then I would reply nope it depends on the rider not the machine then they would change the subject on how they had 3 wheelers and how there friends died and so on

For me I started out on 3 wheels it was a 200m. OK maybe not the fastest bike on the planet but I learned how to ride. Yes like above I said ride not drive. After the 3 wheeler lawsuits came about dad sold all of our 3 wheelers and bought us all 4 wheelers. Being young and having a new upgraded machine with REVERSE AND REAR SUSPENTION, I was all excited. However shortly there after I realized that the 4 wheeler was just a sit and go and not nearly as much fun. I slowly lost interest and only rode my snowmobile in the winter and just used the 4 wheeler as a workhorse, because that's about all it felt like to me.

Some of the quads today are fast and nimble but you still don't ride, you drive. I got to try a 700 raptor one day and I have to admit in a straight line it was freakin scary fast, but it felt like I was still driving instead of riding.

And again I call on the cool retro factor. I can be in a crowd and of the most expensive machines around that are faster then mine, but not half as rare.......

Peace out......

Well, my sober answer is: My first motorized love affair was a 185S...that "S" was for speed...at least that's what I thought when I was 13. 25+ years later the phrase "what's old is new" comes to mind. I am at an age where I think the high points from my generation are actually cool..at least among my peers. One could argue that I'm reliving those years with the means to own those dreams. For the same reason my baby boomer dad wants a 1966 convertable vette I want every three wheeler that pops up on CL....

The 12-pack answer: They are so freakn' cool! I want one of each!

Cheaper, easier to work on, and more maneuverability. Oh yea, they look good too and the stares don't hurt either.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, nothing looks as good sideways through a corner as a 250r/Tecate/Tri-Z/350x (pick whichever suits you. :beer)

I have one childhood memory that sticks out more than all the others and that is me in 1987 being 7 years old watching my 17 year old cousin zipping down the dirt road by my house on his 200X. Fish tails, wheelies, jumping and hill climbing, all of this stuck with me over the years until my mother decided I was finally old enough for my 200m in 1995. I have owned two quads and loads of motorbikes but the most fun is always had on 3. Our riding club has 34 members in southern wv and I am the only one they have allowed to join that was not a side-by-side so that says something about the trikes place in offroad history. They are loved by more than just us riders/owners.

Started my 3 wheeler affair with a cheap ATC90 in my late teens/early 20's lol....Never had so much fun on such a small machine. I love my four wheelers, but when the opportunity to buy a cheap and fun trike arises i've been known to take advantage. Currently the trike stable outnumbers the quad stable 2 to 1.

I love em.. they are an extension of me when riding, where as i feel like I'm sitting unattached atop a quad. quads are boring.. i think I saw the best use of a quad when i was in AZ, they used it to read water meters lol

There are 3 reasons why people buy 3 wheelers, Nostalgia , fun and hunting. In my honest opinion 4 wheelers are good work horses and not all that fun to me. A 3 wheeler is lighter and much much easier to steer through wooded areas . If you take a 4 wheeler in the woods your turning radius is limited and having 2 front wheels is more difficult climbing over logs and between trees. That's why deer hunters are always looking for a utility ATC for their maneuverability. There are pros and cons for both 3&4 wheelers and although the 4 wheeler is a bit more stable than 3 it does NOT make it any safer. Any and I mean ANY machine can be a dangerous so be carefull out there guys and always wear a helmet .. So why trikes? They are the original ATV and were built right the first time and I have a question myself..... Who are the morons that design the ATV's today? Honda needs to take the looks of the 1986 TRX250R / 86-87 ATC200X / 85-86 ATC250R 350X and put those looks into their ATV's of today. They really need to do something with thier fenders on the 450R and all their TRX models, they all look the same. The fenders are pointy and ugly and why did they do away with blue seats? They really should build an anniversary TRX250R , now that would be a seller.

"Arent those things illegal?" That's what sells me.

userj8670
06-24-2012, 01:44 PM
For me I had always heard how dangerous they were and they were illegal...so naturally as a child, i gravitated towards them. Now I cant get enough of them. I like the nostalgia, I like the looks I get. But as someone pointed out earlier you actually RIDE trikes instead of getting on and going. It takes alot of skill and practice and learning your machines mannerisms to be a great rider. The one thing I do love about quads though is all the storage space and trunks. It is very difficult to pack light when trail riding and covering 70+ miles a day.

Cheers!

That would be really cool if honda made an anniversary trx250r or limited edition or something like that I agree quads and trikes have pros and cons but the reason I like trikes 1. Less wait 2.more moveable and they store in tight places 3. THE ATTENTION i GET lol

I rode my buddies Polaris Outlaw... Power was nice but it sucked. As others said you drive a quad, you RIDE a three wheeler. I like to Ride. I really like the fact that my friends are still amazed how fast I ride and how they are never waiting for me on the trails, I'm usually right behind pushing them. Knowing how to rock 3 wheels is awesome.

as i talk my best friend today who ride a 450r quad. i said well i grew up riding dirtbikes and quads, liked both but always wanted a 3wheeler. It makes everything cooler, im short and 130lbs, its alot to push a quad around but a trike it just like a big dirtbikebike to me with extra wheel. love it, also the more people say your crazy and a death trap the less who will ever want to ride it. works out well! silly quad riders.
