Fellow Riders.
I have a 85 Tri Z that i am restoring. I got my Z started but it bogs at the lower end. I took the carb apart and it looked clean...NO dirt in it. I have the needle set on the 3rd notch. I dont have a service manual, but one is coming. I turned the idle screw to about 2 turns and the one on the right side/back corner to about 1 and a half turns ( Pilot? ) I also noticed that my expansion chamber seems to be plugged with packing. I would like to find a stock one and stock silencer if i could. Anyone give me info would be welcomed. I took the pipe and silencer off.
Thanks
Tom
Have you taken a look at your plug? Sounds like you have symptoms of a leaking crank seal, just like me!

No its not crank seals, seals are brand new and i also replaced the water pump seal too.
Tom
Well if the seals are new that doesn't necesarrily rule them out, but that should say no. Only other option is your using cheap ass oil(that'll make it run like crap too), or your jetting is insanely rich. Talk to TimSr about buying some Blue Marble oil. Here's some questions.
What shape is your bore/piston in?
How many PSI compression do you have?
What shape is your air filter in?
Also, when you say your expansion chamber is filled with packing, what do you mean? And you say your pipe and silencer is off, do you mean you're riding around with that off?

I did actually notice i my plug was pretty wet, and rich too. The piston came from Wiesco and so did the jug..from the factory i was told....it is back to factory stock bore. I put in oil from the Yamaha dealer (Yamaha brand oil). i took the elbow for the air cleaner off...because i have a new filter ordered and the old filter is pretty trashed. Its been years since i messed with 2 strokes too. I have a manual coming soon so that will help out too.
Tom
I wish you lived close, I'd help you out. LOL....it's hard to diagnose/fix problems over a message board.

your running with no air filter on at all? 1st off i wouldnt do that and second off that may be why it is running like crap in low end. also if your exhaust is plugged it will run like crap too. get thoes couple of things fixed first then see how it runs.

mine ran like that because the jets were way to high.

I have a stock silencer...if you are interested. Send me a message if you want it.

dudes.
I had a 470 jet in my carb. I switched it to a 450. I don't drive it around if anyone is asking. I just have it running to try and tune it up and get it to run. I have the stock expansion chamber and silencer. Is the expansion chamber suppose to be hollow? I took a coat hanger and poked inside and found packing all in the chamber....which if i can recall my 250r's where always hollow. This is my first Yamaha and i don't have a manual (one in the mail). But all i did is i took off the 90 degree elbow to the intake box. Now when i start it...it wants to run away basically..lol Yeah i know too much air flow.....I adjusted the pilot screw to 1.5 turns back when all the way in. I have the fuel mixed at 32:1.
This is my project bike, but its starting to get me ticked off...lol.

TRG19762003@yahoo.comThats what i had for a main jet a 470, then we put a 360 in it now it runs fine. we looked in this service book and there are 2 diffrent carbs for the tri-z. The jets are way diffrent, they go by tri-z (n) or (s). I had the wrong jets in my carb they were way to high. The tri-z (s) has lower jets. You can tell what your bike is by the handle bars on the frame if its a (s) or a (n).

rtginc, The pipe with the expansion chamber should not have any packing material or anything else in it other than a normal coating of typical exhaust byproducts. Nothing but metal. If you have packing material in there, its needs to be completely clean out of there, and I would strongly advise not trying any carb tuning until you are confident its all gone. The only packing material should be in the silencer.
