Ok so i am currently trying to pick up a 86 tecate and i noticed in a pic he sent me it says "KIPS" on it... does anyone have any info on this? He says it needs piston/rings and i am just curious how i would go about getting them? Any info at all will be greatly appreciated. I will try to get the pics up later

Caution on cost, that's a plated cylinder. Top end could cost $400.00

Well i am gonna trade a snowmobile for it so i should be well off, good to know they have plated cylinders though, but i have noticed that i can get a stock bore sleeve for around $100 plus $150.00 for a complete top end gasket, piston, rings kit so thats still around $250,00.
Haven't owned a liquid 2-stroke trike yet (mainly have stuck to 350x's currently own 2) but i have alot of experience with 2-stroke sleds, always wanted a 2-stroke trike though

I'm just guessing you're not installing the sleeve yourself? If not, that's a few bucks to have it done correctly.

If you need a press to install a sleeve then I'd definitely have someone else do it.
Yep that is a 86, not a 87. Looks pretty good to me! All the hard to find parts are on it and look to be in decent shape. It does have a thumb throttle instead of the stock twist. The forks need to be adjusted in the tripple tree but from the picts you posted it does not look too bad at all!
As for the top end you could always go the route i went w my 86 and my 87... SPROCK RACING 300CC KITS! Its always an option!
Good luck w it!

and does anyone notice the front fender? It looks to be longer then normal or something, maybe its just the way its sittingthe forks are too far down. They should be about 1 1/8" further into the triples. That will make a difference but it does kind of look like the fender may just be hanging from loose bolts. to get a sprock kit just pm,email or call him. I think he has all three methods listed on the site

If you do the trade, which looks to be a good one btw... After opening up the top end and fine the cylinder to have not already sleeved. DO NOT send it out to be sleeved! It will ruin what is a pretty good design. Sleeves always run slower. Retain alot more heat, have a higher friction coherant, and often alter port arrangement in a negative way. Sleeve companies are not performance tuners. For that you would be into alot more money and still have all the negatives. All other oem 3wheeled cylinders were produced with cast in iron liners. The Tecate is the exception. Sleeves do not cost less than replating.

That's too bad if it dont work out because that looks to be a fairly intact Tecate with goodies like coolant bottle, skid plates, headlight, air box, ect
