just as title says its my understanding that 85 tecate came with flatslide and 84 with a roundslide? is this true? which is better and why?

The 84 and 85 Tecate's both came with a Mikuni VM roundslide carb. The 84 was a 32mm and the 85 was a 34mm.
A flatslide carb is better than a roundslide carb. The flatslide has better throttle response and flows more air vs the same size round slide carb.

The 86/87 Tecates did not come with a flatslide carb, it was a 34 mm roundslide as well. The difference with the earlier carb was the bottom of the slide which--if memory serves me (it is discussed in my service manual)--they called an "R" slide. It is supposed to get better throttle response off the bottom.

ok thanks guys. there is a flatslide carb on the parts bike i have so think im gonna clean it up and put it on and see what kinda difference it makes. pulled carb off of my parts bike and it is a keihn flatslide. would this be the better choice for my bike? it has aftermarket pipe and reed valves so im hoping this flatslide will help out also?
