OK so this is my build. It is the 86 250R that has been on a lot of the rides I have, most with me on it. It went to Sandpupi's (roger's ride) in Michigan, Trikefest, etc. My brother ATC-Eric traded me this 86 250R with a mild port for my big bore 84 250R (300R) back in 2009. I started powdercoating things back in 2010. Its now shiney and big bored etc etc. Heres the progression and parts list:

ESR 310 Kit
ESR head pipe flange
Custom In-frame drag pipe with Silencer from NOS_350X
VForce Carbon Fiber reeds
+6 FabTech swing arm
39mm PWK Carb
ESR eliminator kit with K&N filter and Outerwear
All-Balls Front hub bearings
LSR rear carrier
All Balls Steering Stem bearings
10” XOwner wheel powder-coated by BKM
Powder coated front hub and cleared studs by BKM
Rear 10” ITP Baja black wheels
Bolt Kit
Motion pro throttle cable
Inline temp gauge
Tammy Mosh seat cover
20x10 Fast Trekker Titans
O ring chain
14 tooth front and 37 tooth rear sprockets
DG grab bar.
Full powder-coated frame/triple trees and related hardware
New pads all around
Renthal Bars
Extra new Uni air Filter
New rear brake rotor
Stainless steel rear brake line

BIG THANKS TO MY BROTHER ERIC for putting this thing in my hands in the first place. Thanks man!

Thanks! all i can do is stare at pictures of it lol Rides Great! Want to redo the rear shock and have a set of inverts built but thats going to be around a grand for just those. Rides great, pulls hard. Still got it jetted witha 190 main just for the break in on the 310, only had a half tank through it so far. I will start leaning it out as i run more gas through it, but so far it pulls like a DEMON and runs pretty nice. love the inframe drag pipe too

Jason apparenttly Tammy was confused on the year of the seat cover and made you one for a 2nd gen R, since you used to have one.

She will be making you the correct cover stat and shipping it out..I cant believ you got the 84 cover on the 86 seat as well as you did...

Jason, I quietly followed this build for the past year and a half or so. Watching it come together, I knew it would be fast, but had no idea it would lay it down like that!! Congrats on the awesome R. The best part is its versatility. Drags, trails, hillclimbs......one stop shopping for all your triking needs.

Now pay attention kids, Jason taught you a valuable lesson here:
Ask questions, read up on products, do your homework before purchasing and assembly, pay attention to small details, and someday maybe.... just maybe..... you can be an Open Class drag strip stud too!

Well the saga contunues! Heres shots of the bike between the last update in 2012 to this year. The bike ran great, i had great luck with it and did everything from drags to duning. It went to Glamis with me in 2013 and endured a week of abuse in the hot sand. It has seen trikefest in 2012 and missed last year to donate parts to the ATC500R cause. Its up and read for Trikefest 2014 just as soon as Halls inverts arrive! enjoy the pics

Here's swinger updates, invert updates next
Ok so heres my attempt at the 450r swinger conversion for the trike guys that want to try it out. Theres other threads out there but I was unable to find a solid answer about using the 250r components in a 450r swinger. Lots of people do the swaps, but normally use all 450r components which is fine and dandy, i just treid to keep it simple and done on the cheap. Most of what I type here probably wont make sense until you try this yourself, but its simple and straightforward. Anyone that can turn a wrench can fumble their way through this, i managed to

Go with the 06 and newer 450 swinger, its an inch longer than the 04/05 swingers and pretty much the same length as our 85/86 swingers. I went with an 06 on my 500R and an 07 on my 310. The 310 got the 07 bolted up last night. I ended up using the stock 250r carrier, 250r axle (I have a durablue extended axle but the same essential parts), brakes and brake stay, and jam nut. I used the 450r swinger, 450r linkage (front link and dog bone).
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/sleepin-mr2/6ED51A8B-C059-41FD-A493-EBA72E155074_zpsb7hypryp.jpg (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/sleepin-mr2/media/6ED51A8B-C059-41FD-A493-EBA72E155074_zpsb7hypryp.jpg.html)
I had to use the 450r swinger bearings but ended up sliding my old 250r swinger bushings/sleeves/whatever you call them into the needle bearings in the 450r swinger. The 250r sleeves are probably ¾ inch shorter than the 450r sleeves and this way everything bolted right into place on the frame with the rear motor mount and the clearance was perfect.

Pictured is the linkage mount, I had to notch it out with my sawzall for the front linkage to have enough downward travel to clear the frame. Nothing major. I don’t have ‘after pics’ to ad right now, but it’s a minor amount of material to remove, probably about ¼-1/2 inch of material from the very back edge. It will make sense when you get in there to do it. Disregard the sand from Little Sahara, i havent had a chance to wash the bike since we got back from that ride ;)
Here is a link to the aussie guys that have done this swap using mostly 450r parts, but you will find a pic of the notch you need to cut out of the frame in this thread. and lots of colorful pics ;D

http://www.ozatv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5459

I had extra junk laying around that I used to fab up a few pieces. By ‘fab’ I mean I cut and grinded them down lol no fancy lathe or cnc here :p . I used an old swinger bushing from a 250r cut in half to fill the space on the front linkage for the frame, there’s like 20mm or something to that extent on both sides of the front link that need to filled with something so it stays put in the middle. I cut the sleeve in half and ran a bolt through it and tightened everything down after a good dose of grease was slathered inside the sleeve halves and link bearing.

250r Carrier bolted into the 450r swinger with no issues. It sits off center by a few MM since it’s a tad bit wider than the 450r swinger carrier housing, but with the 4 clamping bolts tight its not going anywhere. I moved it over just a hair to get chain alignment where I thought it was perfect.

There is a little sleeve that the brake caliper stay sits on for the side of the swinger. No clue where I found the sleeve I used or what it came from, but I grinded down two sides of it to make it resemble the stock sleeve but it has a flared back to it so it will actually stay sandwiched between the swinger and brake caliper stay since I was unable to get the 250r sleeve to clip on. I am sure the 450r sleeve for the brake caliper stay may work but I used what I had on hand since the swinger didn’t come with one. Gotta be creative!

The stock 250r shock bolted onto the linkage. I ended up using a smaller bolt for one part of the linkage because the linkages for the 450r use a smaller diameter bolt than the 250r does. I will ad pics, but for the most part it wasn’t an extremely hard install and I was able to get it done with only 75$ worth of a 2007 swinger and 450r linkage and my existing 250r axle and brake components. Def a good swap if you want to go for a lighter swinger to replace your old stock cracked swinger or an extended impractical swinger.

I will take some pics of the bike tonight and how it sits, and some close ups of the front linkage and the brake stay sleeve and other parts. I am running an ebay 45$ adjustable rear link for lowering the bike's ride height on the atc500r bike. I was told using the stock 450r linkages will give the bike too tall of a ride height. I planned on buying another 45$ lowering link but after getting the bike assembled and sitting on its own wheels i think the ride height is perfect. pics soon :naughty:

Last night I picked up cr125 forks, fork gaurds, brake caliper and master set up, rotor and brake line clamp and a fork rebuild kit. Bought a pile of inverts material haha Hall is doing inverts for this bike now, waiting on him now.

Contacted ITP about the flaky paint on these over priced baja wheels; they are both bent from a spil a buddy took a few months back on the bike and are most likely being replaced by ITP under a lifetime warranty i didnt know they had.

JasonB

Updates on this piece. Contacted ITP About my wheels since the finish was flaking off pretty bad to see if they had a warranty. Well they only cover the wheel finish for 90 days but there is a lifetime structural warranty. Ended up replacing both rear wheels because they both had a pretty solid amount of bends at the hub. Filed the claim with them like 3 weeks ago, last week my new wheels arrived.

Need to get the new wheels wrapped in my trusty 20" Trekkers next. Right now Hall is wrapping up another set of inverts for this bike. After inverts and getting the new wheels on this bike, I think i will have the rear shock revalved. I'm also waiting for ESR to get their stamps out and make up another run of the ATC 5 pipe, I need a regular pipe that fits this bike and is more reasonable to run than this inframe drag pipe. After riding the 500 I don't know how much I really need to keep another 250r based bike around, I mean I have the 500r the 350x and I'm picking up HoosierLoggers 140 powered 70 in June. Jusf debating on how many bikes I want to keep and maintain. Why am I using reason and logic here?! I should be shopping for more bikes to acquire lol

I went out yesterday to my local No-Mar Tire Changing shop and had the tires swapped over from the old beat up Baja's to the new Baja's. Bike is looking MUCH better. Now i just need to find an ATC 5 Pipe from ESR or convince them to make another batch up so i can buy one. Otherwise the new Inverts from Hall should be here in a few weeks which will pretty much wrap up the rest of the bike for me in terms of mods.

Last week I went and installed the 38MM cast Smart Carb on this bike and set it to 50 clicks from rich. I was finally able to get my brother over to my house so he could kick it over for me since i can't kick anything for another 5 or 6 weeks until my broken ankle heals. Bike started after 10 kicks and seemed to run ok. We only let it run for 60 seconds but i plan to mess with it more in the coming weeks before Trikefest so i can make sure the bike will run perfect come June 21st (TF).

Here is my line up. 86 ATC310R , 86 350X waiting on 3 new wheels/tires and inverts, my ATC500R, and my Fiance's 87 250SX.

I know that the 06 swinger was 3"s longer than a stock 350X swinger; (picture in my 350X build).

It doesn't wheelie well but that keeps the power on the ground so it is deigned to :D

I can measure, but the 05 and earlier swingers should be fairly similar to the 85/86 250R's. Again, I would need to verify this SOON, if it helps you out.

thanks for the info DC, i was going to do the 450R swinger on the 350x but after looking though your thread and another one i found it looks like you have to pull the bike down to the frame and ad the mount for the forward link and theres no way in hell I'm tearing such a mint bike down. when i do, it will get gussets etc but for now just an updated front end and if need be i will have Suspension 101's George work his magic on the rear shock so it can keep up a little with the updated front. And the 04/05 rear was an inch shorter than the 06 and newer 450r swingers, i did a fair amount of research before i stuck the 06 and 07 swingers on my 500 and 310 bikes ;) I love your 350x bike, that swinger and the rest of the work you did to it just really makes it an awesome bike!

Tecaterob; ya the 310 was stretched out 6 inches with a tubular chomoly swinger up until a month ago. I wanted the bike to handle better in trails and be more predictable when being jumped. the Plus 6 always made for a exciting launch, hard to control wheelies, and laggy handling in tight trails. I loved how it looked but it was honestly impractical

Last post until I get my inverts from Jason Hall! Any day now!!! He was wrapping up mine and another set last i heard. Brakes and fork gaurds are here for them as well, just need the triple trees and inverted forks to install. Yesterday i finished clamping the intake tube and oil'ed filter on. Smart Carb is in place and the gas tank is loosely bolted on so i can easily pull it off and tune the carb once we get out to start riding the bike at trikefest. When the inverts show up next week or the week after the bike will be complete for TF2014. you can see the new shiney ITP wheels, thanks again to a great warranty and helpful associates for getting me replacements. I will probably leave the 350x at home for TF since i wont be able to kick it over, so it will be the 310 the new 70 and the 500R as my rides for the Fest.
