Hi, does anyone here have any interest in trying to duplicate the jp racing aluminum tank? This mounts on top of the tri-z frame rails and slips into the 2 factory rubber grommets that the air box cover does. I think it holds about a hair more than a gallon of gas which SUCKS for anything but the track. Heres the twist, when this tank is mounted you have plenty of room under it to expand the tank. Like I said this mounts on top of the tri-z rails so you have all that room where the air box would be mounted to expand the tank. If someone wanted to try I think you could get it to hold another gallon of gas with no problem.
You could even expand a bit under the seat. I have seen many different designs of top mount tanks over the years, it seems if you could incorperate a few of them together it would work out great. I have always said that the JP aluminum tank is by far the nicest tank I have seen, if you paint it black or red and put white yamaha stickers on it it would be hard to tell its not the air box cover(except for the gas cap). As long as the top half of the tank which you see retains the original lines who cares what it looks like unerneath. I know that the fuel pump dosent pose that much of a problem, I have only maybe had one fail on me in 20 years but a tank on top is just much more simple and gives a bunch more options. Less weight, the ability to use yz motors with no probem, piggyback shocks, eaiser rear end mods etc. The factory airbox is good for high water and all but it sucks for everything else. Especially in dusty conditions it gets clogged to fast cause when you are following someone its right up front sucking in all that dust. Yamaha realized that and I'm pretty sure that is why the changed the headlight in 86. If you notice the vents under the headlight are not cut out like in 85. Same with the front fender. It has one less slot cut out on top. I am willing to send my JP tank and a tri-z frame to someone if they are interested this way they can have a mock up. I would rather not hack up an oldschool part but if you could duplicate it and improve it I couldn't care less. I know some people here are working on it already but I am offering to give a good start in the design phase. I would like to see the tank produced with the jp design, I think they nailed it best. I post some pics tomorrow. Please let me know, Dennis
