Help....My rear is loose! and I can't get it to stop!

Ok now that i got your attention:p. I had to replace the rear carrier and axle on my 83 200e due to PO abuse. Currently I have what I was told is an 83 185s carrier and brake drum and a 200e axle. New bearings and brake shoes. Problem is I've got about an 1/8 - 3/16 of slop from side to side with the axle inside the carrier when I grab the rear and shimmy it back and forth. Loosened both nuts and pushed axle all the way over and re-tightened. Still moving! :wondering Are carrier and axle not compatible? I was told they were. Secondly i have the brakes adjusted all the way out at the lever and turned all the way in on the carrier. Brakes are grabbing but not enough. Brake drum too worn? Wrong alignment of lever on carrier? Help me out guys I need some answers!

There are timing marks on the brake arm and cam. Line them up,and you should be good. if the drums worn you can cheat a spline or two. After that new drum or turn yours and I have available oversized shoes if you go that route. Rear wise,,sorry,,my old brain is mush. I know that VERY little 200e/ Big Red stuff interchanges w 185/200s. Drums are different,axles are different. I have a hunch that's where you're at. Needing parts from the same machine. Little jobs become killers sometimes!

Check to make sure your axle is not worn where the bearings sit. I had a 200m that had a worn axel and with new bearings there was still slop.

Thanks Bill & Matt! I have another housing I can put on from a 200e but it was a little rougher and I didn't have it when I started reassembly. I'm too inpatient :rolleyes: I guess I'll need to purchase another set of bearings for the other housing and try again:cry:! Matt as far as the slop it is side to side not up and down. It's more like the housing width dimension is too short. So when the axle nuts are tight in it's not drawn up against the housing on the sprocket side.

I finally got this back together and the rear as it should be. There are differences as 007 mentioned between the "e" and "s" models. Looking at parts sites looks like only 82 & 83 200e & plain 200 (of same yrs)are compatible. The 200e/200 bearing carrier is about 1 1/2" longer on the sprocket side (as seen in pic). Also found out the outer diameter of the brake housing on the carrier is bigger on the "e". Tried to put the same dust cover (from 185s) and no dice.185s & 200s carriers will mount right up to the "e" but the "e" axle will be too long as found out the hard way. Don't know how it would work if ya changed out everything (carrier, axle, etc)? Brake issue was because the drum would not go into correct position therefore I was adjusting on the ridge on the outside of the drum left from wear. When the trike was cornered it would slide back into the worn "groove" or normal position for the shoes and not have enough bite. Anyway just thought I'd pass along the answer to my dilemma so maybe someone else won't make the same mistake as I did.
