I have had a question that i have wanted answered in a long time, and here it is
Why do we like 20 year old machines?
My response
You can easily take your 5K and go out and buy a decent bike
OR
You can buy a heap for 100 or 200 bucks, then fix it up your self, you get the knowledge, the experiance, and the pride and joy of doing something with your own hands, I have restpred two 3 wheelers now, and i dont want to part with the one, and my neighbour has the other one, i might still buy off him later
First resotration
1983 Honda 200 Plain
Condition when bought
- huge rip and 4 holes in left rear tire
-tires where not the same (different tread)
-was barely running
-needed to be shone up and lights fixed
Condition when i finished
-2 new rear tires (knobbies)
-tires where the same (i tihnk the size was 22x11-009)
-started one pull
-all shone up, all lights worked
-looked really sweet
Second Restoration
1986 Honda 200X
Condition when bought
-needed rear fenders
-needed painted tank and decals
-needed rear swing arm bearings
-timing adjusted
-lights fixed
Condition now
-Looks brand new
Price for 200 Plain
paid 200 bucks, put 50 into it
sold for 500 bucks
Price for 200X 475 bucks, put about 275 into it
Will hopefully sell for 1000 or will settle for 900
Reason for all that
I barely knew what i was doing, but through tria and error, some help from skillful old dad and some research here (THANKS EVERYONE!!!)
Now, i can succesfully re do a rear swing arm bearings and do lights, fenders, and alot of other neat stuff
Remeber, your never too old to learn! I am 15 and now can fix alot of stuff!!

because in most cases the old tri z , 250R and tecate are faster then any 4 wheeler made today and for 20 year old machines i think that is awsome. i love haveing my tri z and the looks i get when i kill brand new rapters , and ds 650 and things like that and they are like what the hell my 600cc plus machine just lost to a 250 lol i love that.

i ain't to sure in my case,,,
i don't ride much,,, fast,,, or hard.
don't know,,,, do know i'll do a 5 lane u- turn around in traffic if need be to check out a trike sitting side the road. ( been there -done that)
i took the camara along today cuz i seen one on a city back street with next to no hope of selling. i told nuttyberserzco about it and he's checking into it. 750 asking price,,,, should get for a lower price i would think cuz of location. (85 250r, parking brake even works !).
i just like trikes i reckon,,, john

Why do we like 20 year old machines?
im not sure the age is a factor for me but the pure fact it was cheaper to buy lol
when i bought it i paid $650cdn (81 atc200)
it was bone stock still had the original tires about 60% tread a rip in the seat a busted brake leaver a hole melted on the black ruber around the plastic, and a cracked plastic case cover (right side )
i was looking to have a way to get away from the house and my stepfather (he not mean we just dont see eye to eye)
anyways i rode with a few of my cousins freinds and found that i could go anywhere they did (albeit not as fast as some)
guess im hooked
few of the bikes i rode with were:Honda 4x4 300, honda 2x4 300, yama Wolverin, and few others i can remeber the makes of
wow thats alot about nothing
when i get my current bike finished i am thinking of seeing if my buds older bro still has his "Basket case trike" all i know is that its a 250R and it need ALOT of work well the engine alone is totaly apart and in a basket hence the name if i do fix it up it will be far from stock :) mabie not WILD but somthing that can keep up with the bigger quads but thats a ways in the future if the bike is still around lol
anyways

I brought a trike cause they are cheaper than quads!
If I had the money I would have bought a quad, but now I have the trike it has sorta grown on me! I now realize how much more fun they are than a quad! I dont hate quads though but i prefer to ride 3 wheels.

I like 3 wheelers for a lot of reasons. The biggest is I like to be different ( no surprise there ), I love the power, the handling, the look, ect. It also fun to correct a person that comes in and says " Ain't them 3 Wheeler dangerous?".

i've always liked the way they looked for being 20 years old. my first trike i got for 100.00 was a 110 back in 87'. ever since then trikes was the only atv i've ever owned. now i own (3) 83' 250r's. i like the handling and power of the 250r, even tho mine are air cooled they still haul trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro and there fun to ride. i just cant wait someday to get an 86' 250r. -brad

I like my trikes becasue they are a blast for me and my girlfirend to ride. Hers an '83 200x is perfect for her and right now I am doing some work to it so it should be even more fun. Mine an '84 250R is also a blast to ride and one of the best things about owing them is that when I talk to my brother who owns a Raptor and he says that he got a good deal on it and it only cost him 6400 I like to say Damn I could own 6 trikes for that much. I do wish that I could get the 250R to keep up with his Raptor he goes right around me in the top end. If I could get the 250R to be faster than his Raptor it would be great....

i like trikes because when i was a young teen, early 80's, trikes were the thing to have. lots of people and friends had them. i wanted one so bad !!but we did not have the $$ for one. well now i finally have the $$ so i rebuilt the exact one i really wanted when i was younger. i guess it helps me to relive my youth a little. :-D

I've been ridin trikes since '84.
Quads are so stable that they are boring compared to any trike. The fact that trikes require more body english to properly ride is what makes the difference to me. I don't dislike quads but anyone can ride one over most terrain. Not everyone can ride a trike fast over tough terrain or tracks.
But who am I, but anther punk on a R. Right manny.

REDMAN225: I agree with you 100%, they were the thing to have when we were young. I first rode one at age 8 or 9 and had my first (1973 ATC70) at 10. There is no better way to relive your youth!
Remember if you can ride on 3 you can ride anything!

I think its a combination of things.
First, I also grew up in the 80's and love 3 wheelers. They were all I thought about from 1982 to 1985 - 86. That was from age 10 to about 15. When I see my Tri Z I guess it brings back my youth a bit and the innocent passion that is three wheeling.
I also have a quad and a motocross bike...but last weekend it hit me when I rode my Tri Z really for the first time....
Three wheelers are much more fun than a quad and to me more fun than a dirt bike because you can slide them. Really they are the best of both worlds...
When I see a mint bike it makes me feel like the child in me is still alive and that part of my history is not lost...
If I see a ragged out broken down trike I think perhaps its time to grow up...and thats why I keep my Z really clean...cause I don't want to grow up!
I already became an attorney and business owner...now I want to play!!

Same story here. :D When people seem surprised when they find out im into trikes, I tell em like it is. "when I was 15 I woulda killed for all these trikes brand new, but I didnt have a JOB! well, now I have a job, and can have all the trikes I want!" I also throw in the "just because they dont make them new anymore, doesnt mean I have to give up on them, I'm no quitter!" they seem to just nod approvingly at that!

My dad had atc's when the first ATC 90 came out. him and his buddies all got one ,then he got a 110,then a 185s,. I rode them all after school. He used them to ride to his everglades camp when the water was down. Or his tree stand when hunting. The rest of the year they were mine. Then I got a CR80R around 83/84. Then Christmas day 1985 there was a brand new Honda ATC 250SX. It was my dream bike for the camp, but my I liked to go fast Then my riding buddy was gonna move up from racing a 200X to a 250R so I bought and raced the 200x. My dad then got a brand new 1986 Big Red for the camp. At that time we had the 3 trikes. Then high school came so away with the 3 wheelers and I bought a Nissan truck that I customized for shows. After high school I started going back to the woods and 3 friends had a 200X, Yamaha 225 and a 200s. Then other things came up ,I sold my 200x for a retainer on a Lawyer. A few years went by and my buddy that had the 225 bought a sweet 350X and I got the bug and since I was a little kid I remember sitting on that brand New 250R at Honda West my local dealer and saying I want this one, and the guy saying that I was not ready for that one... Well I am sure as hell ready now. So now I had to fully restore a 250R like brand new. Because that is what I always wanted a BRAND NEW 250R .......... and now I have one. It took 18 years but I finally got it.

well, i was litterally just out 4 wheelin on my 250 polaris, man, the thing is slow! my 200X would kill it, and the tires on the polaris suck trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro so the stuff i went through was only very little, i got stuck twice, but everything else i made it through, i am keepin the trike for the winter, and then i am going to try and see if i can somehow get the parents convinced for me to keep it, i dont care if i have to build a little shack to keep it in!! my mom is bound and bet that its going, my dad says it should go, but i sure as hell dont want it to!
I LOVE MY 3 WHEELER!! DONT LET ANYONE ELSE TELL YOU DIFFERENT!!!
