View Full Version : My new 70 project

I picked up an aborted project 70 in a group of 3 70s in various stages of disrepair 2 weeks ago, and have been making some headway. It came with a 3" extended frame and a Lifan 140 Manual clutch, but was completely disassembled. I was not sure exactly how the extension was done so I added a "backbone" to the top of the frame rail to reinforce it. I also added one of Gordy's foot brake kits and foot pegs as well. I did not like the big gap in front of the fuel tank, as it was left in the stock position relating to the seat, so I moved the tank forward 1 1/2", and made the rear seat / fender so it could be moved forward 1 1/2" as well or by removing a spacer in back, moved back to the stock location. Here are some pics:

Here I added a piece of 3/16 2" angle to the top of the frame tube, it clears the tank nicely and should help carry my "Portly" physique:lol:

I picked up some 8mm nut serts:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x205/murfman_photo/ATCs/DSC02771.jpg
and added them to the frame 1 1/2" forward of the stock holes

Brake pedal

I also made a stainless bracket to mount the oil cooler to the head

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x205/murfman_photo/ATCs/DSC02775.jpg

My Camera crashed so I did not get pics of the seat spacer.

Here is a thought I have about the kick starter, I am thinking about cutting off the splined section of the kicker and weding it to a 1/2" drive socket with the square side facing out. Then I want to weld a leg to the foot peg that holds a bearing in line with the kicker near the outer edge of the footpeg. Then I would weld the remaining part of the kicker to a 1/2" extension. To start it I could insert the extension through the bearing into the socket mounted to the kicker shaft and kick away. Once started I would remove the extension and mount it to the grab bar and away I go. It might be a hassle but it seems better than doing a flip seat. If it does not work I will just go with plan B: and swap on a pull starter.

Once this is done I have 4 more 70s that I am going to build with 110 Lifan E start Auto clutch motors (The motors are in transit and should be delivered Friday) Yeah, I got bit by the 70 bug HARD

I did not get the extended frame back yet, however I did get my "ride red", and "Superbee" frames back.

These pics remind me of my plastic model kits when I was a kid:

Got the Superbee up as a roller, with all the new bearings pressed in:

go with the ytx4 style battery from dratv. you dont have to get it there but take a look. these fit nicely into a 70 chasiss and can be had for under $50. $35.00 if you know someone:D

I ordered one of the Ballistic EVO2 batteries, it is a little spendy (90.00 shipped), but I ordered it based on size, it is very small, and I can mount it outside the frame under the seat fender above the chain, and it weights less than a pound. It will fit inside a piece of 3x3 .125 wall box tube with room for foam padding around it and is only 4 1/4" long.

http://www.ballisticparts.com/products/batteries/4cell.php

According to the specs it has twice the Amp-Hr rating and more than double the cranking amps. They are only supposed to lose 10% of their charge over a full year as well.

Well I got the yellow one running, I screwed up the paint on the tank and need to repaint it ( the clear I used did not like the yellow base coat and wrinkled it, so I said the heck with it and put it on, and filled it with gas before the clear totally cured when I got it running, gas leaked out of the cap and screwed up the already screwed up clear even more and it turned black!), but the 110 pulls my fat trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro along damn good, it is a wheelie machine for sure. After I get the red one running I will pull the tank off and repaint and clear it correctly. I will take some pics tomorrow. I hope to have the 3 of them running by the weekend, then # 4 will be next week, and I will tear down # 5. With the 110 running so well I really can't wait to see how the 140 Manual clutch motor does.

It is a Bosch off road light I have had around for years. I bought 8 of them at a swap meet years ago and have had them on many trucks and Jeeps I've owned over the years. I was down to my last pair on my Wrangler and one got a stone chip in the lens so I ended up wit a single left. It is a 8" diameter lens with a nice pattern. I have not wired it up yet, as I cant decide were to put the switch.

Awesome looking machines! Love the pics of your niece putting it through it's paces.

"Last month I saw Van Halen Live with Diamond Dave out front, got home and rode my 3Wheeler, is it 1985 or 2012?
Ride Red (Even if its black)"

Hey Murf I went to the concert in Edmonton, pretty cool show. Wasn't too keen on 'Kool and the Gang' for an opener though?

Next stop, Metallica in August:w00t:

I was actually surprised by how many Kool and the Gang songs I new. I actually thought they were pretty good, and enjoyed seeing someone I never would have bought tickets for. DLR was awesome and I have been rocking out with the new album since it was released.

This one, it has an extended frame:

It WAS going to be a 140CC Manual clutch, but I sold that motor to order a 150CC E start Piranha only to find out the 150 is on back order for 60-90 days. At least it will give me time to get the other 4 dialed in and everything ready so I can have it running right after the motor shows up.
