I'm in the market to buy a new 1/2" air impact gun with some real power . Every now and then I get a real stubborn clutch nut and I think a more powerful impact might be my best option . The one I have I believe is around 400lbs of tork or a little less its old  .
Question is what's a good/brand gun with lots of power ? Not to worried about price as long as it will do the job !!!!

Don't laugh too hard, but I have had GREAT results with a top shelf Napa 1/2" drive impact. I think it's something around 625 or 650 ft-lbs. I used to work at our town highway department and we had a Napa 1/2 drive we used when replacing snow plow blades. That is a nasty job to subject any impact to. 15/16" nuts, salt water dripping onto the gun and alot of nuts/carriage bolts to change one blade.

The Napa gun the town had lasted alot longer than I would expect for the way we used and abused it! We beat the snot out of that thing and it just kept on ticking...With a fleet of (5) 10 wheeler plow trucks with wings, changing/flipping plow blades was an almost daily chore depending on conditions...

Never had an issue with my 3/8" snap-on impact gun when removing and tightening the clutch nut.

Chicago pneumatics, everyone at the mine (really dusty and abused alot) where I work is using them. I got one at home too and works great! Might not be the cheapest thought...

I would say snap on they might cost you an arm and leg but worth it and they have a life time warranty on there tools

Ingersoll Rand all the way. I have had mine at work for over five years and use it everyday with no problems.

I agree with the napa top shelf impact. I think its around 350-400 dollars. This is a good unit! I have seen a couple different ones in action from buddies tool fleet, and they dominate over my 3/4 in. central pneumatic, and other 1/2 in. impact. Napa is deffinatly a good one, and for a clutch nut, you wouldnt need anything overly powerful.

Hand tools not impacts. Either IR or snap-on, both are hard to beat. The composite IR's are awesome, light and ergonomic.

Snap on 1/2" drive!!

My dad passed me down his old snap on last year, and it stil kicks ass in my book.... Have tried craftsman, IR and some of the others. They dont seem to get the job down. Always have my friends bringin there junk over to remove that specific nut, and axle nuts with my impapct gun...

I would most certainly avoid a Crapsman.

I honestly don't know what brand I have, but it takes everything I throw at it; But, I did spend about 150$ on it. (15 years ago :D)

Mike I own a 725 and its very tough to beat, I could be biased but majority of my tools are Snap-On as my neighbor is a franchise owner. However I also have a new 3/8 DeWalt 20v battery operated impact and that little trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro has a ton of snot. I have removed several clutch nuts with that with the K&L clutch socket. Works great too.

I have been an auto tech for 20 years.
In 1991 I bought a Ingresol aw 434 Super duty impact..Advertised at 800ft lbs. Twin hammer. I took it home in 1999 for my home shop. I still use it. Never rebuilt.
In 99 I bought a new aw434 becuase it was on sale for a smoking deal. I still use it to this day. Every shop I have ever worked at, it consistently is the strongest gun anywhere I go. Generally if it dont take it off, it breaks it off..and if it dont do that you will have to get out the heat or a 3/4 drive impact.
It usually spins clutch hub nuts off in about 20 seconds or less.
As far as I know MAC tools may be the only distributor left for that gun. They make a IR 232 and IR234..But you want the AW 434.

I have a harbor freight gun that I have beat the complete crap out of and it just keeps chugging along. Been using it for motor swaps on toyota's and it does the trick! my gf bought me a set of lowes impacts; gun, hammer, grinder, ratchet and air nozzle. Only used the grinder so far, have yet to test out the rest of the items in the set. I want a cordless impact like you cant believe! my brother has a Snap On battery powered and it knocks stuff out!
