what are the differences in the years of the big red? correct me if im wrong. (decals and seat color disregarded)
1985-bad cold start.
1986-better carb, better sealed rear end, front steering stem lock, gears close to same as 85 but just a wee bit different.
1987-longer starter shaft.

Nice detective work.
Seems like only the early 85 es models had the cold start issue. Keihin QA 01 carbs.
I hope this thread keeps going.
I'm lucky to have an 87es but it stays locked up and the others (1985) get used almost every day.

Not sure why but if you get off any of the 85 models and then get on the 87, it like a different world.
Looks bigger, but isn't, seems heavier, but it's not.
Very strange

The '86 control switch is different than the '85.
The '86 rear brake drum is also slightly different than the '85.
There also some other small changes i.e. vent/drain lines for the carb (though that is probably cuz it's a different carb)
Not sure if the '85's have the helmet lock like my '86 does.
