Also on that list determine what you want to do with parts such as blasting, plating, painting, chroming, or buffing.

Are you trying to do an actual restoration or just trying to make this a nice rider? The reason why I ask is, I'm not sure if you know what all is involved in an actual restoration. Using all honda hardware. Re-cad plating nuts and bolts and washers and all the parts that were originally cad plated. Nos honda fenders. Nos honda tires. The proper color of paint, not just from a can (well some places will mix paint colors in custom filled cans), but actual paint applied by spray guns? I hope you know that the people who do serious restorations search all over the world for replacement parts. Restoration is a serious word not to be taken lightly. Restoration even goes as far as to take a stock carb back to it's factory original finish, not just a little carb dip, can of cleaner and add a carb rebuild kit. Do you have a factory assembly manual for this trike? The assembly manual tells the mechanics at the dealership how to properly assemble the trikes when they come out of the crates. It shows detail like how the electical wiring harness runs down along the frame of the trike and the routing of all the cables and wires necessary to run the trike. It's a big deal not to be taken lightly when you use the word restoration. A true restoration will take a couple thousand dollars. The level of detail on a restored trike is mind blowing. I've seen a couple restorations on here where the trike ended up nicer than when they were new. Anything other than this level of time and effort, should be called a refresh, not a restoration. All the work that went into my Tiger 250, if was a really intese refreshment of a trike that needed alot of work. Not a restoration by far. Great examples of restoration work can be found by looking for machines done by Vintage Restorations or by OC250rs' machines, which some of his parts have been restored by Vintage Restorations. There have been a couple other machines done to the level of an actual restoration, one being a 73 atc70 done by a board member that I can't remember his name though, sorry. I remember a few US90s done by another person, that were simply breathtaking. Those are true restorations and I know I would never personally even use the word restoration for any machine that I have because it's really a slap in the face to someone that either does true restorations or has had their machine professionall restored. Either way, all the best with your project. And I ask you to please show courtesy to those who do actual restorations or have had restoration work done. Sorry, but this is really a big pet peeve of mine.

I agree 100 percent and If a mod can change the topic to "rebuild" I would feel much better about this. I know some of the members have put many hours into there trikes I plane on this taking at least a year! And I am sorry if I offended anyone I ment no offense and thank you for pointing that out! But I would like to make it run and look as new as I can I have the money and the time with this forum I am sure I will get er done!

Yes I knew as soon as I picked it up it was a 110. The plastics are easy to find but the rubber back flaps are hard to find!

I just would like to make sure I do this one right! I would like to know the best way to go about starting out. Cleaning? carb? wireing? what is the best starting point? I have fixed and or replaced alot of parts but a total rebuild... I know this might sound ignorant to most of you but this is why we are all here there are members on here that can do a 110 rebuild with there eyes closed. I love 3 wheelers I have rode them all my life and I will ride them till I die.

So with that being said where is the best place to start?

personally i'd start with a bare basic teardown, inspecting things as you go. remove the plastics (basicly done) pull the air box, exhaust, motor, wheels/tires, bars, controls, all frame plates and covers and anything else you want to go further with. no need to tear into the motor, elec harness or totally taking things apart, unless you know it's going to need it. inspect the bearings and frame as best as possible, even check up in the frame under the rear skid. once you get that far, you'll probibly see where to go from there. :beer

most important i think clean and organize your work area, and then yeah start removing pieces and cleaning them, are you planning on doing the engine? maybe just set the engine aside for now and start on the chassis and get all your systems cleaned lubed and working. there is no proper order,, as you take things apart and clean them you will find stuff to replace/rebuild. you'll get it, I'd get everything looking decent and working properly that way you can learn more about it. Then maybe go back and disassemble again for finishing of parts. just some ideas, I'll tell ya it takes ALOT of time and patience, 2 things I don't have a lot of, lol

I saw you were looking for a step by step restore post in your other thread. I was just asking the question for clarification purposes. As far as where to start, you have to think it all through. You have to have a plan. You can take pictures of what you started with. Make a list of the parts you want to replace, parts you can repair as well as what you can repaint, rechrome or replate. Your main starting point is from the frame out. The frame is black, but by hondas paint codes, it's a certain color black, you need to find this out first. You need to figure what is painted black. Then you need to strip those parts down, repair what needs to be repaired and then to repaint those parts the proper color. Next would be the rear bearing carrier and the front forks. Then progress out from there. Get yourself a dry erase bulletin board and a cork bulletin board and plan it out. Have before and after pics on your cork bulletin board. You can mark off or easily erase things you do to the trike and changes to your plan that you may need to adjust as the build goes along. You may have to buy a junker or 2 to get all the honda hardware you need unless you go buy all new or as much new as you can. Your big ticket items will be original tires and nos plastic, so budget for those accordingly. Once again, best of luck with your quest.

I have 4 junkers and plenty of part's I was just wondering all that is wrong with it right now is a weak spark should I fix that first before the rebuild? I also have a Note book and my wife is going to print out the PDF manual for me so I can put it in a 3 ring binder monday. And thank you so much for your input!

Mike,,def get it running perfect ,,BEFORE you tear it down!! Weak spark will most likely be rust/stator related. Get it perfect mechanically before you strip it! All the rest of good advice here should march you right thru!

So the question is now should I torch them off or use a cutting wheel with my air angle grinder?

The axle really is a minor problem, a pain in the butt, yet still a minor problem. The cutting wheel would be the best since after using the torch, you would have to grind it smooth to get it through the bearings. Get yourself a nos wiring harness, more than likely, problem solved. If you have other trikes, take a used harness off of one and plug everything into this and see if that solves the problem. Don't make yourself any more work than you have to.

Also, are you planning on saving the axle by cutting the hubs in on each side,,, like > X < , the X being the hub with 4 bolts, or are you just going to cut the axle, these axles aren't that expensive, I'm just wondering all that you're planning on doing with this. There is a lot more work involved with trying to save this axle, but if it was a rare aftermarket axle or an axle off a Tiger or other rare 3 wheeler, then it would be worth trying to save.

No I have at least 5 83 axle with hubs :)

That would have been point less. Who ever did this wanted to ride BADDDDDDDDD!!! The hubs were off 2 different trikes lol one was a 110 and the other was off a 185s I think my 185s has a 3 bolt pattern. WOW the things people do. lol

the 185s hes 4 bolt hubs ,the 3 bolt is early 110 or later model 90 ,keep at it

The rubber pieces are shock dampeners for when you start to move forward on the trike, they take up slack and cushion the starting or stopping of motion.

Like "damper" springs in a clutch plate. But springs aren't dampers - kinda like restore vs refresh or engine vs motor ;)

The bolt patterns are year specific not model specific on the "sport trikes".

3x100 = 74?? through 81 on 70, 90, 110, 185s, 250r, FL250
4x130 = 82-? 110, 125, 185s, 200s, 250r (82), FL250
4x110 = 200x, 250R (84+), 350x

The original 185 and similar 200 200m etc got a 4x150 bolt pattern with 9 inch wheels.

The funny part is seeing a 3 bolt on one side and a 4 bolt on the other welded on. Cutting them off is the best plan - they're usually welded on because the splines are stripped on axle and/or hubs.

are you going to buy any new parts for it? mite want to get a set of bearrings, check the axle for the splines , are you going to sand blast and powder coat or just slap paint on it?

I am sand blasting them i just have to sneak the parts one by one into work! lol the smaller parts I will use the beedblaster. I have never had anything powder coated before so I will have to do some shopping around I will post the quotes here and see what yall think because I have no idea about powder coating prices!

So what is the best way to get the rust of the axle and still keeping the machine look to it? blasting will take off all of the machining finish off so... not sure how to go about it. anyway here is what I have after i got all the gunk off it.

OK so i grabbed the cut up axle and and my angle grinder and it is taking off all the rust but like I thought it is removing the machine finish. any ideas? I think blasting will do the same.

Yup a grinder will remove alot of things, including the finish. You can always send them off and have them refinished to look like a factory finish.

It looks pitted in the pictures. You will never get that cleaned up with a wire brush without destroying the original finish. If you want a factory finish you will have to have it turned, and replated. If you're not going for a full on restore, you used to be able to buy a finish from eastwood that mimicked the factory type coating.

I wonder what it would it look like with a 220 pad? The pad I am using is MEGA PAD! Here is the pic of the pad I think it's a 36 grit and I think it's way to much for this job.

I have the mud flaps you need but I don't know if I can part with them though I always figured one day I would probebly get new fenders and would want them back on but I have also been thinking about selling it or parting it out as I have enough trikes and never use that one, so let me know what else you need and if it worth my while to start parting it I will probebly, also you can find the service manual by clicking on the blue words there, and I think the 110 manual covered a few years, anyways mine is a 83 110 too so let me know, And you can do the rebuild in way less then a year hopefully unless you plan on doing some kind of museum resto, I though I was bad because my 200x has been apart for 4 months, but soon she will be done I just sand blasted and painted the engine today, and the last parts I needed, new oem fenders have been ordered so By the end of the week hopefully i'll be riding her

I painted my 200x axle red and I love the way it looks also I don't know if this will work on an axle but why not sand it to a polish and buff it like I have done on my forks almost a mirror finish now

All rattle can except the white on the tank and fiberglass fenders. They got epoxy primer and BC/CC white.
I used Duplicolor red caliper paint and silver wheel paint. Can't speak to the paint durability - I sold it shortly after to fund a 200x project.

Chrome powdercoat is pretty nice stuff too. No sanding, no overspray to clean up. Just sandblast and take them in for a coating. Cheaper than good quality paint and lasts a lot longer.

If you're rattlecanning the rims, I would go with the duplicolor wheel clearcoat...it's a very nice clear and has a very nice hardness to it, especially for a spray can. Also, why are you calling this a refresh? Seems to me that you're taking the entire thing apart, painting everything, and making it look new again (looks great BTW). If that's not a restoration, I'm not sure what is. I read what Vealmonkey wrote, but I believe the restoration his is referreing to is reserved as a "concourse" restoration....just my 2 cents.

restoring it would be rebuilding it to bring it back to like new condition or better. cleaning, repainting old parts to get it looking as good as it can for little money and work possible would be a refresh. i do see where your coming from though. :beer

BAD BAD rust holes what should I do I would like to find another one but any ideas on fixing this? I am afraid my welder will just blow through if I rey to fill in the holes,

Where the hell's your safety glasses? You only got two of them, you know! This was my solution cause looking for a pristine seat pan is like looking for gold. First I sandblasted it then I painted all the rusty areas with this stuff. Then I gave it a couple of coats of paint and handed it off to my upholstery lady. If the outer edge all the way around is good and the integrity of the mounting studs are solid, use it. If not, throw it in the trash and get on ebay!

I would use a stripper or even a da sander.The metal isn't that thick,plus if there is corrosion.There is alot of good info here on how to take care of the inside of the tank.Also spray paint won't last on the gas tank,the gas will eat it up.
