i would like to refinish my frame for my 1982 250r.. i know powder coating is the way to go but there is no one around me who does it.. i was wondering if anyone knew if there was a certain kind of paint such as wheel or caliper paint that i could paint on myself that would be tough and also look good??? i would also like to repaint the engine, any tips for that??? suggestions are much appreciated!!

i heard painting an engine is not good since it traps in heat. but i did it more than once lol, use HIGH TEMP paint. on the frame i used a tractor paint. it was for metal and long lasting. it came in a rattle can so its cheap but it lasted

Nothing wrong with painting your motor, they do it from the factory!!! Just clean it down real good with a degreaser , whatever you use on the frame Im sure will make it better then what it is now! Take your time even if it's spray cans!! Lol

if you paint the engine, the prep work will define your final product. Use several light coats. Even though the factory painted the engine, you can tell it is very very thin. Even though thicker paint may not hold a significant amount of heat, it still will hold some. Some is more than you want. Are you going to go black on the engine or another color?

Some guy bought an old electric kitchen stove
from me for his powder coating projects.

I'm not even sure of the temps required.
I do know that people can spend tons of time resizing
bolt holes and clearing coated threads.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that 2-part automotive paint is pretty tough. You could also go with a 2 part epoxy paint, which they can mix at places like Sherwin Williams.

Where in Minnesota are you?

Just remember that the better the prep work, the better the finished product. Very often you'll see some one cutting corners (paint or powder coat) to save time, and any minor blemish will be amplified on the finished product. If you're not wanting a show room finish though, then don't worry about it. I restored my 82 R, and I wince at ever scratch and chip.

As for engine paint, it'll only hold in some heat. But, as mentioned above 'some' is more than you want. Black paint will dissipate heat better than other colors. Don't worry too much though. I painted my engine Yamaha blue, and I haven't had any issues.
