i have an 86 250r basicly stock besides a full fmf pipe and pyramid reeds. my carb is gettin old and was lookin into buying a new one. ive heard good things about these carbs. but what i was wondering was what are the pros and cons of this carb if any at all? or what carb should i get? i ride woods mainly and climb hills. most of the time i dont hit 5th or 6th gear. i do but not very often. any info would be great. thanks

I have that carb. Pros are it's easier on the throttle thumb, bigger better carb for better overall performance especially when used in conjunction with a performance reed setup and exhaust. Plus that carb gives you room to grow with your engine when you start getting into heavier mods and even most big bores.
My old setup was a stock cylinder bored .050, 38mm AS carb, 1Dir reeds and cage with spacer, high compression head gasket and full FMF Fatty exhaust. Had awesome mid range grunt, but the power signed off rather quickly at high rpm.
I currently have an ESR 350 kit with ESR full exhaust, reeds and trx9 porting with race gas dome. Just did the build recently and haven't ridden it much. But I have been told by some who know their stuff that my 38mm AS carb will work just fine for my setup...
It's a good carb.

so it will work good one my set up even if i leave it the way it is now? is there any cons about it? should i run a smaller carb?

No real drawbacks to running that carb. I do however recommend getting the carb boot to fit the larger carb. It is available from ESR. http://www.eddie-sanders-racing.com/product_p/upp%20intake.htm But it looks like they can machine the carb to fit the stock intake if you wish.
Here is the carb I have. http://www.eddie-sanders-racing.com/product_p/38mm%20airstryker%20keihin%20carbs.htm
I recommend having them machine the airbox side of the carb to fit the airbox if you plan to keep running the airbox.. Also note you will need the correct throttle cable which is also available...

Put it on & you wont look back. The only con would be installing it for the 1st time but thats to be expected due to the size increase.(The airbox to carb boot can be a pain at 1st to connect.) Really theres no cons only +++. I put a 38mm PWK Quad Vent Air Stryker on my '85R & couldnt be happier- you really dont need the 4 vents tho -unless youre MXing. You'll be more than happy with the PWK A/S it will do wonders compared to the old stock PJ 34mm. You might want to change your throttle cable to a longer universal motion-pro cable with the curved end at the carb.

It's one of the best carbs out there and i love it!! Easy to tune, better throttle response, bigger!!! As for the air boot all you have to do is heat the boots up with a hair dryer and they go on fairly easily. Awesome upgrade over the stocker IMO.

Awesome CARB!!! better throttle response!. use a heat gun or hair dryer to slightly soften the carb boot the first time!!!! MAKES A HUGE Difference

Ripper and Roostmaster are right about using some heat to get the carb into your stock boots...
But if you go that route, be sure to thoroughly check those boots for dry rot and cracking. If they are original they are likely to be getting hard from age and not very pliable. Next stage is cracking. If you have any doubts as to the integrity of your boots, replace em! It's not worth ruining a top end for the cost of a new carb boot...

IMO stay away from the AS carb, and the quad vent... just my personal opinion
a standard pwk, Or pwm are the best options.

I like the 38mm a/s.... I prefer to use water from a freshly boiled kettle personally... Just pour a cup and let the end of the rubber to be streched sit in it for 2-3 minutes.... It seems to be alot more friendly to the rubber!!!

The BRV rubber is for a stock carb, it worked real nice, haven't got around to the other one yet. Waiting for the top end to my engine. I'm sure it'll be easy too tho!

Well I got the air box end on, it was a bit of a pia... Used a 0.70mm feeler guage to assist in the fitting.. I couldn't imagine doing it with the air box tube still connected to the air box!! Lol
