View Full Version : In the middle of building up my 84 200x for performance (progress so far)

Hey everyone I'm in the middle of building up my 200x performance wise, and figured I'd share it with everyone. Curious who has done the same performance mods and what they thought of it.
Also curious if with these mods I'll be able to stay with or possibly beat a 350x or 400ex? I've read it can be done...

So basically I started with a mint 84 200x (original cylinder and piston still looked like new when taken apart)
So far here is what I've done/ordered...
Performance:
-Wiseco 12:1 piston
-WEB camshaft 214 grind
-WEB performance valve springs
-Intake manifold from an XR200
-XR200 ebay carb
-K&N Filter
-DG Exhaust
-C12 race fuel already purchased
-Motor is at machine shop having clearence checked for Cam and while its there I decided to go ahead and have it ported (was told its the best thing to do to take full advantage of a CAM)

Other goodies:
-Pro Taper bars
-PowerMadd hand guards
-Moose Racing dual gasser throttle (this thing is cool its a thumb throttle and twist throttle in one)
-Blue fork boots
-Blue seat cover
-Maier super scoops
-8" Douglass aluminum rear rims
-18" Douglas MX tires (any suggestions to gearing with these tires? I also have a set of 20x11-9 for heavy trail riding as shown in pics would like a good all around gearing option)

Here are some before pics I'll post the afters when its back together...

looks like a great build soounds like your off to a good start you might be intrested in a lightend crank and lightend fly wheel for mor throttle respond also if you can try to get a copper head gasket to go with your 12:1 piston !

Sounds like a good plan to me, I've got a DG exhaust, i love the power and the sound, but i was real disappointed at how quickly it rusted, didn't take a month of march montana weather to make it look worse than my stocker

Thanks guys...
So where would I get the copper gasket?
I'll talk to the machine shop tomorrow about lightening the flywheel.
I have header wrap for the header pipe, and I find a wire brush and can of high temp will keep the silencer looking good
If I find that the xr carb isn't enough, what the best 4 stroke carb for a built 200x. I want something with a butterfly choke, it's next to impossible trying to tune one of the 2 stroke carbs to run consistent on a 4 stroke

About my previous post pertaining to the carbs...
I could be wrong in this case so if so please correct me.
Have people had good luck with the plunger style chokes on these?
How would a 28mm round slide work with plunger Choke? Are they a nightmare to tune? Are they consistent?

mikuni make a 28 ml carb with a plunger style enricher valve/choke, they work well but it reqilres a special intake.

If you ordered your piston kit from Powroll it would have come with a copper/steel gasket. Maybe try calling them and ask nicely if they will sell you one. I just bought a NOS 28mm mikuni roundslide. I was told by shortline10 (guy has years of knowledge) to change the main to a 190 and pilot to 38....mine are on order lol. Good luck and I will be following this thread.

Also you can lighten the flywheel yourself. All you need is a drill and muscle. Check out my the build of my flat track 200x on 3wheeler.org under build up garage on the second page. I posted an article on how to do it.

I talked to my engine builder about lightening the flywheel but decided against it due to my riding style. I didn't want to lose any of my low end torque.
I did decide to have it ported and polished and hope to have the motor back next week fully assembled
I'll post pics of it all together and let you know just how good it goes

sounds good so far, we are building 2 200's in the future with close specs. another thing you can look into is ''grinding on the ignition advance'' to get more timing. i only heard of this and not sure if you can actually do it. also, how big is your head pipe? we are building our own exhaust pipes and we are going with 1 1/2''. is it an actual xr 200 carb or a knockoff? beware of the knock offs cuz they can " cheat" you on the size and performance ability. you should have no problem keeping up with stock 4 strokes of larger size.

So I'm still waiting on my motor guess I should have expected that with it being the busy season. No hurry right now anyway... I just separated a rib from the cartilage in my chest so I'll be laid up a while anyway.
The carb is a knock off but is deff larger then the stock one and takes the same kind of jets. So hopefully it will work if not no big loss it was cheap and I'll just move up to the 28mm carb.
I did notice that Parts Unlimited sells a adjustable timing gear for the 200's suppose I could give that a try. Has anyone used one? What were the benefits?
I have all the other parts bolted on the wheeler now and it's sexy as hell... I cant wait to finish it and post the final pics.

I have herd that before from my friend he put one on a 185s and he said it rusted FAST!

I have never use the adjustable timing gear for small engines, i dont think you will gain much with it because you are changing cam timing not ignition timing. I have used them on chevy V-8 engines but it makes them run like crap when u start moving the cam timing. You can try it cuz the are cheap enough.....turn them one way they ''tune'' the cam for more low end, the other way gives more top end. As out dragging a 350 or 400ex...i dont think you will have what it takes. A stock 400 ex probably has upper 20's and few run stock ones. A mod 200 may give you around 20 (just a guess) 200x-14hp stock.

If the x is only making 20 hp at 282 lbs, it will have a hp to lbs ratio of 14.1:1. The ex will have to make 27 hp or better to out run it. .theoretically. And as we all know, you need to get it to the ground! Seen some nasty rides get stomped cuz the JA couldn't get hooked up, or shift.
