I have an '86 350x which I have about $1550 into all together. It is stock with the exception of the seat cover and a few other add ons like guards and new bearings. Some people call that a waste, but I don't think so. I was just wondering what some of you have invested and in what.

I only have about 1200 altogether into my 85 250r.
My buddy AtcDave (who I bought the 250r off) has about 10 grand into a very well done Atc500r.
EDIT September 2007:
I did some math today...Iv owned my 250r for nearly 10 years... on a yearly basis spending anywhere from 500 to 1000 in parts/maintenance items.
Adds up quick. By the same token, between purchasing and modding my 07 trx450r, I have close to 10 grand into that as well. Add to that 50$ a week in fuel.
Easy come, easy go.....right?

approx. $2200 in the 350x - $900 plus parts
approx. $1800 in the 250r - $1500 plus parts
approx. $2200 in the tecate - $950 plus parts
the 350x has new fenders all around, front tire, clarke gas tank, renthal handlebar and grips, rebuilt forks, fork boots, clutch, seat cover, levers, petcock, k&n air filter
the 250r came with renthal bar and grips, fmf pipe and silencer, k&n air filter, nice tires, the only things i had to buy was a front sprocket cover and case saver, extended swingarm that is not on yet, new levers
the tecate needed a lot of work. i have ordered approx. $400 in oem parts, $265 for front and rear fenders, $135 for headlight plastic and right radiator shroud, $50 for gas tank cover, $300 for some extra parts off ebay, $110 for k&n air filter and dg silencer, i plan on making this bike really hot, going to powder coat it up.

Im not even gonna say what I have invested in my Tiger, but you guys would NEVER believe me.
Ive fixed up or refurbished alot of trikes with my brother, and I have to say, the budget is around $1000 going in, and we usually go up to around $1500 on a general tear down, replacement, painting, top end and misc parts. I think it is more elbow grease than money that makes a nice trike. So far, I have had only one bad bottom end, and that is the one thing that shoots the price up on a rebuild, thats for sure.

I know without a doubt, hands down, that Mike from Vintage Motorsports has the most in his NEW 85 R. Everything on that bike is new. the frame, the tank, the motor, the swingarm, the forks, tripples, shock, axle, wheels, hubs, tires, EVERYTHING is new OEM parts. And everyone knows OEM parts cost an arm and a leg.

That's the original brake line and it should be left on IMO. On these two trikes The one on the left whatever it was I paid new for it in 85 plus $400 in tires/exhaust/guards/fork boots. The one on the right I got it for $900 + $350 in tires/clutch/misc. bolts./carb kit/headlight guard/fork boots.

The most I have ever heard of putting money into a trike, was a story out of atv action I think. It was a custom atc 250R chassis with a cr500 powerplant that was made for the dunes. About everthing was chrome and aftermarket and I believe the final cost was about $16,000. Holy ###!

i saw that atc 500r. it was made from a cr500 and had 300ex rear fenders and seat. it was nice. looked like a modern and chrome atc250r, but had the 500 motor. that was a nice trike.
JBXK has a nice tecate. he probably spent a pretty penny on that machine.

I have invested well over $6000 in my '85 250R. I bought it for $1600,powdercoated everything, all new Honda plastic and '86 decals, went through the motor, chromed everything,LSR bearing carrier, Renthal Bars, Renthal Gold chain and sprockets,Chrome Harley stash tube,Stainless braided hoses,Cascade billet gas and block-offs. Origonal Dunlop tires, Braking Rotors,4 different expansion chambers(Bills,Paul Turner,Coffmans,Answer,Dg.....and silencers. DG grab bar and the list goes on...I am still not finished.
Over the years, I've spent over $10,000 on the Tecate I've owned since new. The Tecate 500 I'm in the process of finishing is only at around $2200, so far. I'll have pic's when it's finally done.

Ive had some really killer ideas for my Tri Z. My wife keeps leaning towards just the stock red and white that it is... Im also leaning more that way because of the lack of aftermarket color choices in plastic for the Tri Z. I have a kick ass color scheme in mind, but Im gonna try it on something else first to see what it looks like in person. If it does, then my Tri Z will be one of a kind also.
Maybe this time next year Ill have the Tri Z done. I keep putting it off, because it still runs so good. I hate to tear apart a perfectly good engine when there is nothing wrong with it. :-P

Hey airmancam, the way it's geared top speed is about 82mph. I cruise on the freeway comfortably at 65-70. It handles like a tight turning quad(no crabbing), after installing the sway bar steering damper and CRJ front lowering kit. The wheel/tire combo needs work to try and keep up with the crotch rocket crowd, they just hang with me now for the entertainment value!

Ya in MI quads can't be made road legal but 3 wheelers can, and it relates to the differential. But you could probably swing it with a 3 wheeler and had all the other stuff you need.

Thanks ATC, you are correct. 14" Super Swamper (27"dia), DOT approved. The dealership that did the required safety inspection struggled with the same thing, took him 20 min. to find the DOT stamp...LOL! The service manager was so concerned about reprisals from the DMV that he spent over an hour going over the Rappy with a fine tooth comb. In the end, he had no reason not to sign so he reluctantly did so. :-D He was way more difficult than the DMV and CHP combined! LOL! As they say, all is well that ends well... :)

11-19-2003, 08:38 PM
Hey Legaleagle,
I bet those tires really howl going down the highway about 70mph. Did you have to redesign the brakes to accomodate for the weight of the tires and rims?
legaleagle
11-19-2003, 09:17 PM
I can't hear any tire noise on the freeway, due in part to the wind, and also due I believe to the light loading on the tires compared to what they are designde for... Just a guess, but for whatever reason, they are quiet as a mouse. I have a set of street tread tire.wheels on it today, and I don't like them any better than the Super Swampers. I'll try different pressure settings and see if there is an improvement before I give up on them.
As for brakes, bigger would be better. But I didn't want to make the change to stock config any harder than necessary so I left them stock. They do work well as is, but I am going to look into better calipers when I get a chance. :-D

honeslty man.. dont go with black plastic. It looks good for about 5 minutes. It gets dusty, first time you wash it, it scratches up. Not deep, but on black the scratches stick out big time. Sitting outside or riding, man the thing will look filthy just sitting there. I will never put black plastic on anything of mine again...

Nothing against black plistic but I don't like it. I was going to keep the white fenders but paint the airbox cap and frame from a fade of black to white. The only black would be the shouds on the radiator.
But you know what? Screw the craptor theme....I am going with the Silver and white frame. Silver at the neck and covering most of the airbox cap and the shouds. Then white where the shrouds end and the rest of the frame.
A silver/grey seat, white fenders, raptor or banshee chrome rims and gold acceents like hubs and sprocket hubs...plus the 'Z''s and accnets in flouresent orange/red....kinda like the Z400 color of teh Z.
I know how to make things look good and this one will be awesome.

I delivered four trikes to Blazer-one's door. In return I got his very custom 350x. It took all weekend of e-mails and a hip-shot to pull off. I was half way across the state before I got to talk to him on the phone. It's a good 50/50 trade. I think we both got a good deal.
He got my 200s, 83' 200x, 85'200x, and 85' 250sx.
I ended up hauling his custom built 85' 350x home. I spent $100 in fuel and a nine hour drive to pull it off. I only seen his trike in pic's on the net. It was my only chance to have a real nice trike. One look at his work and I was set back. I was glad I made the trip.
I like custom type trike's. Pure original is fine, but I lean toword the different styles. It's nice to have a trike that has some aftermarket gooodies such as;
Powdercoated the frame, swinger, front fork sliders. hubs , triples, headlight guard, oil cooler guard, rear brake lever. and kickstarter, the footpegs are chromed. DG excellerater exhaust. rad bearing carrier, durablue plus 4 HD Axle. x ring chain. new sprockets 13-40 rad rear skid. uni filter. renthal bar, itp wheels and gecko tires. Rear shock and forks have been gone thru, I have not done any engine work, previous owner said it had been gone thru about 3 years ago, and I do have the recepts..

Due to the rebirth of this thread, I'll chime in. Nothing serious compared to a lot of you guys but...$1000 purchase price and about $1800~2000 invested since with another $500 or so planned for over the winter.

want a laugh?
I went through a 110 pulled from a junkyard inside and out investing about $1200
and then melted it so I had to start over
I easily have over 2000 in an 83 110 that just sits in the corner of the garage - I don't ride it - but what am I gonna do? sell it for 300$?
I think its in the family for good.

Well, I guess I'll chime in. My Yz was worth about $2,800 IMO. I know it books for $2,950. However, all in all I spent about $2,200 total for it, that's bike and mods. I got that bike so cheap it would make you sick! Traded er for the 200R straight up. So, 200R with new tires = about $2,300. Believe me, after this winter it will be alot more. She's coming to TF08 with me, gotta make her perfect.
