83-85 200x tranny problems...

I put new shifting forks in it because it like slips in 3rd gear (shifts and runs through the other gears great) and 3rd gear is doing the same thing...Im getting really upset because i dont know what else it could be. all the gears look fine, not breaks or anything, but yet its like its slipping out of 3rd gear.

Usually when gears go bad, its not the teeth that you see that cause the problem. Te gears have knobs on the sides that mesh with holes on the sides of others, and if these knobs get rounded off even a little bit, they slip instead of staying meshed in the holes.

According to the service manual if the transmission jumps out of gear the causes are:

1. Gear dogs or slots worn.
2. Shift fork bent or damaged.
3. Shift fork shaft is bent.

You have eliminated number two so I would go back in and check both number 1 and 3. Hope this helps...
