Is there a difference between a 85 and 86 big red 250? Are the engins the same?

The engine is the same. What's different are the swing arm/rear brake system, the '86-'87 had a cold start system in the carb, the seat color('85-black,'86-gray,'87-charcoal)and the decals are different. I may have left something out, or was wrong about something, so if so, someone more knowledgeable can correct me :)

All correct above,,the starters and reduction gears are different. But as far as dropping in a Complete engine. Same.

The 86 and 87 had better water proofed rear ends.

the 86 model had a larger head pipe heat shield, and also a helmet holder and a lockable front steering, like street bikes have.

both axle and the rear tube/swing arm are different..
pretty sure you could swap the entire rear swing arm with all that it includes but definitely not the individual pieces
(axle, hubs, rear brake assy...) only the differential is a direct bolt on that will cross the 85-86 gap..
I just put an 86 diff on my 85..tell the people ACE!!

Will the left side hub from an 85 fit an 86? I know the right hub won't fit due to the brake.

No, different. An 86 needs a 86 or 87 hub.
