Just wondering what others do when they put new grips on there machines. I tryed a few different techniques but never gotten the results I really wanted. My first attempt was to use Pro Taper Grip glue. the guy at the bike shop swore by it(prolly because is was like $14) so I tryed that. It didn't seem to hold up to long though after about 4 rides they started to twist loose. The other Method I've tryed which seems to work pretty good is to wrap black electrical tape on the bars then spray them with carb cleaner or gas,let them get sticky then try and slide the grip on. It seems to work pretty good but still they tend to work loose after awhile. I've never try to use grip wire but I have a friend that uses it on everything. So what do you guys do to your grips?

Swamp,
I don't use any potions or lotions to hold them on - just bare chrome bar. I used that isopropyl alcohol gel that is hand sanitizer in order to get the grip onto the bar. (of course the alcohol gel evaporates away completely) The set I put on last summer are holding firm. They were stock Honda parts.

I use a firm hold hair spray, with three woman in the house it's easy to find and does work. I'm sure a good 80's brand endorsed by whitesnake or twisted sister would be the ultimate, but there are catastrophic world ending chemicals and propellants in them. You grips would stay put even in a nuclear event though.............
seriously hair spray does work.

I've been looking into some locking grips but never seemed to find anything close to the pattern I want. I would like to find something as close to the stock Honda grip pattern as I can.

I've been using black spraypaint for 30 years.. I tried the $15 Grip glue stuff that made a mess and was a total waste of time.. Just grab a can of your old spraypaint.. squiiirrrttt.. into the grip slide it on and position it where it needs to be.. quickly or it will dry. Wipe off the excess and done.. I've been doing it since I started riding bmx bikes over 30 years ago.. By far works the best. Grips won't come loose. You will have to cut them off with a razor blade.

Clean bars. Any spray paint. You will have to cut them off 10 years later.

The oem Honda grips need no glue etc to hold them on, all I did was dab a little water on them and they slipped right on . They don't move at all or atleast I have no probs. As for aftermarket grips I am not sure, you will probably have to go with the previous suggestions.

starter fluid !!
Ive always just cleaned the grips and bars with soap and water then rinsed well, put some water on the bar and grip and slide them on, if I have ever had one slip I just re-cleaned better this time and stuck it on and haven't had them slip,I usually at least let them sit a day before using them which is probably over kill, but this technique makes it so I can re-use the grips If I ever have to take them off for something or even switch them to other bikes, so realistically this is good for anyone who doesn't want to have to buy new grips every time they have to remove them for some reason.

starter fluid !!
Then put a igniter at the end of your handlebar and squeeze the grip.

I use spray paint on the grips and spray the bars with carb cleaner right before I slide the grips on. I've done about 6 sets of grips so far and they've never twisted loose.

Hair spray is always my first choice and WD40 when I can't find any of it in the house (I really should buy my own bottle). Add safety wire if you have any doubts and make sure to beat the ends into the grip far enough that it never cuts your gloves. I HATE putting the right-hand side on, seems the grip was always made for a smaller tube. I've found that warming up the grips a bit with a heat gun can help. If the grips are really bad (cheap) you can put them on with contact cement, or carpet glue, but it would be best to sell the ride before they need replacing.

Theres alot of good info in this thread thanks guys. It seems like alot of guys are using the Hairspray/Spraypaint method so next time I will give that a try. Has anybody used Spraypaint/Hairspray on the chrome handlebars like whats on a Yamaha? The kind of grips I've used in the past are Renthal and Scott but I'm getting some new Honda's for a few of my bikes. One thing I've noticed when I put on new grips is I have to poke a hole in the ends off the grips to let the air out of the bars when I put them on. Anybody else have to do that too?

We always used to use soapy water when i was growing up on our mountain bikes. I either use soapy water now on my atv's or spit, which ever is handy HAHAHAH

I recently started using a method I really like, and it works great! First and foremost, the bar surface must be clean and free of any old glue residue, or paint residue, it must be spotless. I then use compressed air. Starting on one side, I start the grip on the bars, blowing air in the other end. Once it is on, I slice a tiny hole in the grip end that is on, and blow air into it to put the other side on. Be sure to hold the mounted grip, or else the air will blow it right off while putting the second grip on. No waiting for glue, paint or hairspray to dry, and no residue. Works like a BOSS! the air pressure will effectively blow up the grip for easy placement, then when you stop the air flow, the grip seats firmly on the bars.

Yea, I have. Some grips come with a small pin hole in the end for this reason, but I've seen bars on bicycles and snowmobiles that have a small hole (1/16”) drilled in the center of the lowest point (installed) to allow water drainage. Might not hurt to put one in your bars, especially if they are steel. I should add that on a twist throttle set-up if you remove both old grips and install the right side first and then leave it loose when you put the left one on there should be no air build-up. Its the thrumb throttle bars that have this problem.

i've used hair spray on my grips all my life. best thing i found when i was a kid riding bmx, been using it ever since with no problems. doesn't take very much at all either. works great for taking grips off too. only had a few that kinda twisted up when they settled-in after a week or so, but never moved after that. well as long as i didn't get dirt under them.

I use hockey stick tape around the bars then make a small hole in the end of each grip use the air compressor and it blows the grips right on there

i've used this method, it works ok. a word of caution: DO NOT do this in the evening and the go riding early the next morning. trust me on this, it's a good way to wheelie down a bridge (intentional) and while you're front tire's in the air have you're grip slide off sending you flying into the pickers
they need a little time to dry and get sticky:rolleyes:
