$250 Tecate SCORE

As I'm perusing Craigslist today I see an ad for an 86 Tecate with no spark for $450....I call the guy, determine that it's an 84/85 and he keeps saying 'I am open to offers'. After saying that 3 or 4 times when I'm just trying to ask what shape it's in (no pictures in the ad) I ask what he would take if I come with cash today. He says $250 and I say I'm on my way. It's not getting spark, but that shouldn't be that hard to fix.

Should I sand and restore the plastics? There are some cracks that are stitched back together. I'm assuming those are the original Kawi decals and don't want to ruin those, but...?

oh well if i missed it I am happy in knowing it went to a fellow board member and a close one at that.
I might have a few of those missing part and can probally help with the spark problem if you need any help.

hmm a tecate without spark? unheard of! lol! it's an 84 if you don't know The front fender is junk and not worth doing much with. The rears are uncut oem and may clean up. good score at any rate. pick up a manual, it will help you pinpoint the spark issue ( assuming all the ignition parts are there) most likely the stator. The stator coils are only 39.00 if you know how to use a soldering gun and follow instructions. 125.00 for a bolt in stator plate

Nice score! Called about that one right after he sold it. I don't feel so bad now knowing it wasn't an 86 but good score none the less!

Stud: unfortunately the front is trash and the rears have a six inch crack. They are cracked under the seat (weird place to crack), but when the seats on you can't really see them.

Tomorrow I go to take a look at an 84 250R....hopefully it will go similar!

Those fenders are worth fixing up... A little TLC and they'll look halfway decent. Mine looked like that when I bought them, now they look like this:

A word of caution, they're gunna take some time lol. Definitely get a Ricky Stator for it, the customer support alone is worth it.

Nice bike Xpress - I will be buffing them out, but I'll probably just have to get a new front since it's stitched up like Frankenstein. Did you use a hand sander or just your hands? I will definitely being visiting the thread on how to do them properly.

nice score! REALLY makes me want to start shopping around to find a tecate, love the 86 ones but an 84-85 with some mild mods is on my list of things to buy. Keep us posted on getting it going!

Thanks. I used plenty of sharp razor blades to scrap off a lot of the oxidized plastic, then I went to town with wet sand paper. Needs a LOT of refinement still.

I got it running. Bad stator as assumed. Haven't ridden it much or touched it since I got it running. Sitting for the CPA exam today, so should have a little more time to devote after I get this done...
