View Full Version : How about Ice Racing the Tiger 500?

Well, it's not so much a question as it is something that's in the works right now. Preparations are being made as I type. Tires, studs and stud blankets will soon be appearing at an undisclosed location. New fenders front and rear and139917139918139919139920 a repop Tiger front number plate as well as professional and totally cool numbers and graphics from blue27 at blueline decals. A board member will be at the handlebars that has some ice racing experience. The Tiger will need a little work but is already more than halfway towards ice racing. Mainly needs front brake work and some tune up. Maybe, hopefully, T-shirts available. Hopefull the Tiger Jockey will chime in. I'm getting kind of cranked up about this. Just had to spill the beans. Wish us, mainly the rider, luck and safe riding. Here's a few before pics to tide you over.

I just want to see it run and I want the Jockey to not get hurt. The rider is a modest man and not accustomed to fame and fortune and all the accolades of 3 wheeler performance prowess. Unless he chimes in, which I hope he will, he may just remain the masked rider or maybe as I will refer to him as "Rider T". T as in Tiger of course. His safety is number one, his fun is number 2, all else is just icing or maybe ice on the cake.

Dang! This whole ice racing bug has really spread huh! :beer
Hey Veal, just curious, how come you aren't piloting the big Tiger??
EDIT: we were typing at the same time apparently.. You answered my question.. Definitely looking forward to seeing some vids.
If all goes well, do you think you might try and make a Raffa's Ice-Fest event?

The Tiger is slated for 2 official events. It may pop up at Raffas. It depends on Rider T. He is a man with a job and a great family. This ice racing adventure is not a High Dollar effort with a large pit crew. The masked rider will be doing all the transporting, testing and tuning, so it really depends on his schedule. I'm really hoping he is safe and has fun. If he really enjoys running the 500, he may very well try and hit every venue he can. The more time he can get on the 500, the better the whole situation. He has experience ice racing, but no time on the 500, so he is sort of behind on the learning curve. Plus he has to tune the 500 and maybe regear to suit him. Other riders have several years on their machine under their belt, which is a big advantage for them.

I'm really looking forward to ice racing for the first time next season. I even got the kitchen pass from the wife! Hope to meet up with you, the masked rider and the big Tiger sometime... Really cool that you are allowing another person to race your trike. :beer

Anyone that has seen the tiger 500 or the 250, has been able to ride it if they want. That is what they are made for. My machines aren't museum pieces, not saying anything bad about totall immacuately restored trikes, just that mine were never meant to be restored, just nice riders. The 500 has never had much done to it. except a little work when I first got it. The front brake has been on the fritz off and on and is the big thing the masked rider will have to fix. It really needs a reliable front brake. LOL If you came down, you could ride either Tiger if you wanted. Pretty much anything on the trikes can be fixed, it's the people riding them I worry about. I can get another frame built. Heck the 500 was turned into a quad a long time ago and was turned back into a trike again, so it will never be 100% original, but who cares. It's all about having fun and riding. I mean I have another 250 tiger in parts and tons of parts, if I'm that worried about it. The previous owner of the 500 flipped it at Trikefest and trashed an original set of Plastic fenders, which were worth about as much as the trike itself. LOL It has repop fenders, I can get more, I have other fuel tanks. But there is only one masked rider and as far as I know his wife and family still want him. LOL

I rode turbocoupes tiger 250 at icefest and here at my house. It was pretty tough to ride, mostly bottom end power. What great experience. You are welcome to come here and ride when we get ice. How much hp does that thing make?

Not a clue. No idea how tired the engine is either. I know the 250 is a time bomb on 3 wheels. Once it hits on the pipe, it just reaches for the sky. The 500, nice predictable power across the entire rpm range. It just pulls as long as you keep your thumb on the throttle. I've never had enough room to open it up in top gear. By the time you hit 3rd gear and are getting into it, you usually run out of room, and then you hope the front brake is working, and it usually isn't! LOL I have a reprint of the Rotax 500 engine manual and I'm pretty sure that info is in there, but blue27 has that right now. I think he's confiscated that for the library. LOL

01-16-2012, 12:10 AM
Well if you ever get up here when there is black ice, you won't run out of room :D
And if you are racing short track, you kind of need the front brake. But just to mess around you will be fine. Would love to see it go.

It has to be like when I had a 94CR250 rocket and my bud a 88 CR500. From right off the throttle you had any power level you desired on his bike. My 250 had to be ridden like Jeremy McGrath rode

Hopefully. All depends on wether the masked rider can get it sorted out, but I have faith in him. I hope to be up to your house on friday night, but will more than likely have to leave saturday. I don't think that we'll have room in gazoos van for a 2nd, but I really do want to come up and at least meet everyone. I work almost every weekend and I'm scheduled to work sunday of the weekend of pennsyltucky. There are only 3 people who do what I do, and if I can't get the guy who is scheduled off to work, then I have to be there Sunday at 4am. It sucks, but it pays the bills and pays for the toys. You don't still have that PCCC front end do you?

soprry about the pccc front end i had to sellit to freakfix last year to help recoop some of my losses for the pensy ride. and i think i may know this masked rider ?? and i look forward to meeting you gazoo has had nothign but good thigns to say about you. and fyi the pond for pensy might be a go if it styays this cold i had the 4x4 quad on 2 inches of ice today so we may be midnight ice racing again on the pond at pensy ride
Vealmonkey
01-16-2012, 03:03 AM
You better make sure there is plenty of ice on the pond if the masked rider brings the 500! I don't mind people riding it, but I don't want it to have to be fished out of the water. That would sort of put a damper on things, literally. Brian has me played up, I'm just a goof. Ask all the poor saps that know me. And the best laugh yet, I suggested calling us
"Tri-Monkey Racing". Does it get any more corny than that? LOL I wonder what people would do if we could get some T shirts made?

He goes by 640AK, he is as close to George Lucas as we'll ever get on this site. http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/137204-Anyone-using-a-26-quot-utv-tire-on-a-Tri-z You need to watch his stuff.
If I had the time+cash (not in that order) I'd make a mega money losing 25 year after the ban anniversary three wheeler documentary (like a three wheeled version of On Any Given Sunday) Your 500 running/racing would fit well. Seriously, get good footage, who knows what could come of it some day.:beer

Got back a little while ago from blue27s house. Bruce and his wife did some really nice decals for the front and rear fenders. I may post pics tomorrow, but when I do, it will spill the beans on the masked rider. Bruce also worked up a possible design for a T-shirt, pending the masked riders final approval as well. As soon as Bruce gets the repro front number plate, it will be decaled and sent to the masked rider to be added to the front of the forks. Also secured a couple extra decals and the Rotax 500 engine manual just in case! LOL

140272140273140274How about a teaser pic or 2 of the fenders not mounted? I know, kind of simple. But being as a first effort and an ice racer, didn't want to go too overboard. It might get crazier for replacement fenders. LOL And be assured, I sent the pics to the masked racer before I posted teasers on here. Plus I sent the masked racer the proposed designs for the T-shirts as well. Pending approval on the shirts. Hopefully the masked racer checks his email before coming on here. LOL

Raffa, that's too funny. You know the masked rider. I can't believe he hasn't chimed in, but I think he is liking the unknown noteriety! We have no clue how competitive the 500 will be. Even for 500 ccs', the technology is a generation before a liquid cooled 250r. The 500 has a couple little things that need adressed, but hope it won't be too much of a hassle. Just to see it hit the ice should be pretty cool though. The races will be indoors. Elmira New York and Jamestown (?). Hopefully everything will hold together. If not, we'll have to tear it apart and rebuild. And that will bring some extra internal bits along with it as well. Depending on how it does on the 2 races on the ice, I guess will be wether or not it gets taken out to the dirt. I don't know how it would do in a TT as it doesn't have the stock shock, so not alot of suspension travel. I would hate to have to dig the shock out of the 250, but may have to. I don't know what kind of jumps and stuff ashtabula has and don't know what kind of time the Masked rider has to do something like that. Like the rest of us, the Masked Rider is a working stiff and has family obligations. We have to see what happens once the ice mist clears. The Masked Rider may determine that the 500 is the biggest pig he has ever ridden! LOL Hopefully there will be no major mechanical malfunctions, but I do have spare parts if needed. Thank you Erectordale. As long as no one gets hurt, it should be, at the very least, a topic for the future and will probably have some neat video and photo ops. Come one and come all to Elmira and Jamestown. Come see the Dinosaur and give the Masked Rider as well as the other competitors your support and well wishes. Have your picture taken on a Tiger 500 if need be! LOL

If the geometry is the same as the 250 it should feel a lot like an 86 T3 out there. My T3 with a wider axle and a couple inch extended CalFab felt very similar as far as riding position and attitude to John's Tiger 250 on the ice at Bryan's last year.
Vealmonkey
01-23-2012, 06:09 PM
The frame geometry isn't quite the same as a 250. When the Tiger 500 was made into a quad, and Erectordale was making it back into a trike, he had to have a new neck machined that he welded back in place. If you look at an "original" Tiger 500 and my Tiger 500, there is a slight difference in the rake of the front end. Not sure if it's good or bad. The masked rider picked up the 500 Sunday. He and his trusty assistant arrived (once he made it to the correct side of town, damn GPS and several street names pretty similar in a big city) and we started moving machines around. A big task made equally as fun as there was a sheet of ice all over everything in my driveway and back yard. Underinflated tires did not help any either. LOL But we got everything rearranged and loaded on the trailer and back in the garage. I had to beware of the trusty assistant as he kept trying to get my PK Racing suspension 70 out the front door of the living room and loaded on the trailer as well!!!! LOL I heard today that everyone arrived back home safe and sound and that there seems to be no real major issues with the 500 except for leaky front master cylinder, blown seal or seals on the front fork and no fuel in the tank. The no fuel explains why we couldn't get the 500 started! LOL So now with the 500 and all the bits I sent with it at the masked riders lair, and tires and such starting to arrive, things are looking promising for the near future. Now all the masked rider needs is an icy pond and some wrenching and he should ready for a couple hot laps.

Tiger used several models of Marzocchi- Try Penton parts- They have fork seals for several models of marzocchi. They sell repro dust boots as well. These are the tiger forks that have of come on a few of my models...I havent bought the dust boots for this model fork yet so cant say 100% they will have seals for this model. They are a bit smaller..dont have the my measuring calipers and forks within reach. They are the forks they used exclusively on every 125 I have seen and they also came on my Dunlap Tiger Prototype.

I can't believe it's this much of a hassle to find some old crappy fork seals. LOL I may just take off the front end of the 250, but Eric would need to source a new front tire and to stud it. I was looking at my remaining fork stash, and the forks are different, meaning that I would have to dig up a different brake caliper mount and possiblyi a different brake caliper and who knows what kind of shape that stuff is in, as well as different triple trees and new steering stem bearings. There really wasn't much of a standardization of parts and it a pinch it make things a real pain. I talked to Eric and he is stoked about doing this, but he really has been burning the midnight oil and he has found a couple other little issues that will need corrected, but no time now. I will have several small jobs for Mike at HRE, which he will be so happy to hear about. LOL New front axle, new swingarm pivot bolt and bushings, new lower steering stem bearing race, which should be interesting. Heck, maybe if the 500 is this torn down, maybe Eric can get it blasted and fresh powdercoating on it as well. What the heck, right? LOL Come on everyone, do you know someone that may help with these fork seals? I need some vintage bike guys to bail us out here, big time. Erics' dream is so close to becoming reality, that it's not funny. I know you guys want to see the Dinosaur hit the ice. Someone on here has to have some kind of a connection or info.

i did a little searching,,, the numbers do kinda look like imperial seals but i cant find a seal that is thin walled like this. i have found 1 7/16 id but the od is over 2. this od is around 1.690.

Just spit balling here and I only dare suggest this because you’ve mentioned previously that your Tiger is not 100% original. Is there a chance you could find seals from a Japanese bike to match the fork tubes that are slightly larger than the current O.D. of the legs and machine the O.D. of the legs to suit? You could then either remove some material to allow the seal to drop in far enough for a steel/aluminum collar and use that same circlip (providing you don’t have to machine the O.D. so much that the grove is gone. If the current depth is too deep you’d just need to use a thicker washer under the circlip. If you’re ice racing you don’t need dust seals.
That’s one thing. The other (more feasible) may be to go the manufactures of seals like this place http://www.oilsealindia.com/ I source weird stuff for a living and I have found that almost everything short of an F1 car part is shared by something else. It’s just too expensive to develop a bearing or seal for one fork, or transmission. I looked at your photo and I see your O.D. and height, but if you could make a large sketch of it an include the I.D. (if you posted that, sorry I did not see it) and a rough profile of the I.D. and take some better photos I would suggest posing as a designer that needs that specific seal that you may buy thousands of if things work out and start sending an RFQ to everyone on Alibaba. If you find someone that already makes that size (I’d be shocked of no one did) then you can just ask them to mail you a couple samples for testing and they may ever throw in the freight too.
I wish you the best of luck!

Just looked thru my stuff boys/ The closest I come is 35 ID - 47 OD - 10 high. A steady hand could whistle them down on the outside no problem. But I don't see your ID ? If that was good. You could maybe put these in,leaving out the alum spacer. As long as they are snug and the snap rings in. You should be good. But this is all about the ID being right.. I'm less than 2 hrs from you Eric. They're yours if you want them. I'm sure I could order the right ones Monday. Let me know if we wanna do that.

thanks to everyone trying to help. the O.D of the inner fork tube is just over 36mm... i cant get a good measurement if the seal, its rubber so im sure you can understand. i get roughly 1.445, or just over 36mm for the i.d.. the whole stack of seal parts that came out are 14mm or .555 tall.
El Camexican, i have had the same thoughts about turning out the inside of the outer tube.. it would be some work but could be done... the problem is finding a seal with this thin of a wall... the inside would have to be 36mm and the outside would have to be not much more than 44mm.. not a real common seal size.. as far as height the original seal is about .260 or between 6-7mm... keep in mind that there are 2 seals here, if we found a taller seal a spacer could be made easily.

Okay, I'm totally confused here now. Bruce, please explain this so I understand, will the forks you have work with the forks Eric has or are they the same? I'm not working on much sleep here, so it is making me not quite understand what's going on here.

OK, so just to clarify here:
ID: 1.445 or just over 36mm
OD: 1.732 or just under 44mm
Overall height: 6mm-14mm
A one piece seal with the proper dimensions could be made to work, correct?
If the ones blue27 listed from Dennis Kirk won't work, let me know and I'll call my bearing/bushing guy in the morning.

the forks I took apart measure just over 36mm with an OD of 48mm and are JUNK forks that are not usable, stuff that is still here but came with the Tiger lot that Pat bought.
Here is the chart I am going by...without the forks here we are just guessing, if I had the forks I could order a bunch in and return those that dont fit but we do not time for that.

Nope. All I get is a page with the powersport logo and tucker rocky logo and various options at the top of the page, otherwise it's blank. Got a page number I can type in?

I just wanted to update this thread for the people helping to find these seals.
I was doing some searching this morning and came across this site. Apparently newer BMWs use Mazorchi forks. I know that you said these are Marzocchi forks, is it possible that there was a linguistic misinterpretation?:
http://www.motobins.co.uk/displayfinal.php?s=0&function=show&subs=117b&title=ITALIAN+FORK+OIL+SEALS&model=
At any rate, if indeed it's Mazorchi instead of Marzocchi, it may simplify your search if indeed a Beemer fork seal would work.
(for some reason I have a vision of Groucho Marx doing one of his schticks related to potato/potaato)
Hope this helps
ETA: I talked to my bearing/seal guy and he has this available:
36 x 45 x 7mm single lip seal
36 x 46 x 7mm double lip seal
35 x 45 x 7mm double lip seal (this one would put a tad bit more pressure on the od of the tube)
I did not ask if he had them in stock
If you want to call him, he may be able to ship them/have them shipped to you or (just guessing here) possibly give you the manufacturer so you can order them locally:
Cutter Sales: 763-425-8696 Ask for Marty, tell him he talked to Dave about these seals this morning. I mentioned possible Imperial dimensions.

Nope, It's Marzocchi or the other forks Tiger used are Cerriani. I haven't heard back from Eric, so I'm not sure where everything stands right now. I just know I have to overnight a brand new Douglas front wheel and the seat grommets off of the 250.

I didn't have a chance to load all the pictures I have. I've even got a couple shots of .08. I think all the trikes made a great show. It was tough on the riders who didn't have much prep time for their machines. It will be alot tougher next year as the new riders know what to expect and tune for.
