hi i have a 1983 yamaha ytm200 and the headlight sometimes works and sometimes it doesnt and it always burns the bulb but now it just wont work at all even with a new bulb. what could be causing this ?

Well the simplest and most hopeful is a bad ground or or a shorting hot wire, and the worst is a bad lighting coil. First check the wires then check the lighting coil. Do you have a manual if not there is one here. http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/

Stick a volt meter on it and see what kind of voltage is coming to the headlight. At one point on my ytm I put a cheap single wire voltage regulator on it because it kept blowing bulbs... All problems solved after that. Recently the tail light went out along with the headlight, put new bulbs in and they have been working ever since.

Voltage from the stator increases as rpm's increase, often exceeding 12 volts. The voltage regulator keeps the voltage from exceeding 12-14 volts to keep your lights working. Before you go out and buy something find a volt meter to test the stator output.

isnt a volt meter that thing with 2 wires ?
