Like 75 differences, from the frame to the forks. Everything got tweaked.....

Tons of threads on this, just last week I believe.

yes, alot is different, but will swap over. the major things are the frame(less rake on 86), much stronger footpegs, improved/more available rear axle/swingarm/swingarm parts, bigger bottom shock bolt/bushing and improved forks(hold more oil)???. Either one is a good bet, so much has been swapped since new(unless the owner kept it original), that you are bound to find a mix of 85 and 86 parts. Mine has a mix of all 85 and 86 parts, as well as trx450r stuff.

Honda always changed stuff by a couple MM's or a degree here or there for perfection, may not always be visible to the naked eye.......

I though I read somewhere that there was 3 degrees difference in the rake from 85-86 The 86 seems to be built for more high speed riding like the baja.

doubt it, I changed from a 85 to 86 frame. Just swapping over everything that was on the 85 frame. I had a short track setup w/ some factory racing top tripple. Everything was left the same, just reassembled on the 86 frame. It handled worlds different. It seamed as it was more stable on higher speeds, turned slower, lower foot pegs than the 85 frame. I liked the changes of it. I already had a 86 trx swingarm, brake and axle setup on it, also a 86 bottom shock bolt and bushings.

69-ss-396 you may want to look at page 1-3 in the official Honda service manual under frame specs for the definite answer.
