I am selling it because,
"it is too fast"
"it has too much power"

"Its a big bore, been bored 80 over so its like a 330, well thats what the guy I got it from said the guy he got it from said."

Any technical motor build information on trikes seems to get washed from the owners memory by cases of Keystone Light.

"In good shape for it's age" When you call the guy with the $1500 R and you ask him if the case is cracked, bearings tight, brakes work,etc.. and he gets pissed and says what do you expect in a 85 model! Well for $1500 and "in good shape for its year" I expect it to be nice. Usually get a reply like " these things bring over $4000 on ebay" I swear Craigslist is a magnet for idiots. It amazes me that they know how to use it.

I swear Craigslist is a magnet for idiots. It amazes me that they know how to use it.
Thats what perplexes me. They somehow have the ability to use Craigslist, but no way in hell could they spell it, or any other word in their listing. Or google the bike they are trying to sell for the proper info on it for that matter.

"1989 350x Black"

that made me angry. spray bombed 350x. stickers, everywhere. Oh man, im sure there are so many "gems" ruined by kids. TERRIBLE.

"2010 yz 80" was pretty funny too, opened the post and it was a little pw80 painted white.

You guys covered just about everything. My biggest pet peeve is when they say it's "very clean" or "mint condition". I never trust pictures and can't understand some peoples definition of "clean" or "mint". Drives me crazy to make a trip and to only be disappointed.

The other thing that gets me is some people think because of the age of these bikes they are worth a fortune when their in non running or less than average condition.

My favorite one is this ad: http://providence.craigslist.org/rvs/2760624044.html

"A True Barn Find"?!?!!?!? Does that thing look this it has been sitting in a barn ever? I mean it has add-ons that wouldnt have been available if it was parked more than 8 yrs ago.

And the kicker is, he has been trying to sell it for over 2 yrs now.

not a trike ad but not too long ago there was someone on craigslist selling a suzuki 125 atv and they kept calling it a yamaha 125 in the description. i emailed them and told them that it is a suzuki, if the dont beleve me, look on the side of the motor. the following week it was changed to suzuki 125 for sale. it didnt sell then so the next week it was put back up as a yamaha 125, people are idiots. I love it when they list the old honda fourtrax 300s as a 350 and it clearly says "300" on the side panels lol.

Funny thing is, it's an 84 ES, and I would give him $400 for it.........pretty good shape.

01-06-2012, 06:44 PM
that ES is very clean looking, and for 400, its worth buying a "NOS" carb..lol

my favorite is " ran great, I decided to restore it and don't have the time" what they should say is I screwed it up, tore it apart, and have no idea what im doing.

or on some of these new bigger track quads, I saw a predator ad for a 2004 500 predator. decent shape for a 2004, but by no means mint. he tore up the head on it, tore it off, and has a picture posted of what looks like it sitting in the rain with no head on it....still asking 3k for it..lol "all it needs is a head, can find on ebay for 25.00" these things cost a fortune to repair...i know this well for the predators, I owned one.

Had a guy with an 84 200x text me this evening wanting to trade for my Pitbike straight up. Keep in mind that my pit is worth at least what I'm asking (600) he sends me pix of a fairly beat 200x that needs a front tire, rear pads, and has a basically non existent rear fender. I told him its not worth 600, after telling him, politely, that I'd have to put a couple hundred bucks into the thing to make it rideable, as I don't want to be covered with mud and snow every time I ride it. He sends back, "theyre fine just race cut, its no big deal" and then procedes to tell me that I should ask to trade for a utility quad instead of a sport quad. People are just dumb and arrogant these days.

hear ya there swampy, buddy traded for a nice 250r few years back (local, not CL). fresh rebuild on the motor with tons of hop-ups on it, but the guy who traded it to him never tuned it. he just bought all the go fast parts he could and bolted it together. it would start and idle, but that's it. touch the throttle and it would fall on it's face everytime. buddy tuned it and made a nice profit.

Yep, you guys covered all the gems...

I recall a hilarious ad I saw a year or 2 ago. The seller (obviously a kid) had an '86 Suzuki Q-Sport. Paraphrasing here, but it was bored .080 over so it naturally was a 310. His expert mechanic buddy who supposedly owns a wheeler shop did the work. He then went on to brag about how that Q-Sport SMOKED a trx250r in a 300' drag after getting that .080 over bore job along with a bunch of other BS like wheelying every gear and on and on....

I USUALLY don't bother with people like that, but I couldn't resist the temptation and emailed him expressing my doubt of his claims of having a miraculously powerful, 250r eating, Q-Sport. I told him I OWN the same exact quad as well as a 250r and at no time in this universe or the next one over could that ever happen unless that R was stuck in 3rd gear! He replied swearing up and down his Sport could whoop up any 250r, so I challenged him to a race for pinks. I even told him I wouldn't go above 4th gear, LOL! He dodged pretty quick saying "I don't think they issue pink slips for ATV's". To which my reply was to inform him it was just a figure of speech and that the offer still stands.. Never heard back again. Had a good laugh over that one.

Another more recent was this one.. http://utica.craigslist.org/rvs/2750517982.html

Occasionally I will email a seller and politely explain that they are mis-advertising something. I emailed this clown a couple weeks back and told him he actually had an '83-'85 200x and if the seat was original it was '83-'84. No reply. He has relisted it a few times now since and hasn't changed the ad... He was originally asking "$1000 firm, no lowballers I know what this is worth".... I see he lowered the price to $800 though. Still a bit pricey for a 1st gen IMHO...

Tking
01-07-2012, 03:20 PM
The best one I saw was this: 83 185s great condition, new brakes, all new bearings, recovered seat, few cracks in the fenders.
When I got there the first thing I noticed was the seat was recovered with a black plastic garbage bag with electrical tape, and only about 1/3 of the rear fenders were there.

01-07-2012, 08:00 PM
The "runs strong" line always seems to razz me, usually if "runs strong" is in the description the rest of the bike is very clapped out.

I think the old paper Cycle Trader is out of business? I know it disappeared long ago in AZ. At least when it was around the $25 for a 2 week listing kept all the poor ignorant squids from posting.

Must have been about 5 years ago, when things were high priced and worth it.

Craigslist was for a "Mint, OEM, low hour 86 350X"; I think it was 2500$ which I was willing to pay.

Put the $$ in my back pocket and headed down. Took 10 kicks to get it running. Smoked - "don't worry, that clears up", bent bars and grab bar, dead tires, beat up all around.

I tried to explain to him that I knew trikes, they had a decent following and his ad was very misleading.

I didn't even make an offer because he thought it was mint no matter what I pointed out.

Not sure what they paid, but someone bought it............

Just found one today...."i got a 1985 250es big red three wheeler got dented gas tank and some cracks in plastics but got em stiched up needs cheap gasket sealer cost like 5 bucks good 3 wheeler call or tex"

I know this thread is a few months old .But I will ad to it. I read an article a couple months ago for a 250r.It read something like this. For sale 86 250r .Its the only year it was liquid cooled and it is RARE NOT MANY MADE .He was asking like $2500-$3000.I wanted to correct him. Also it pains me to see a seller start a wheeler and rev the crap out of it when you go look at it.After they tell you it runs great ,starts on first kick .Then when they get it started the seller jams it in gear and rods the piss outa it .Then they want you to still buy it.

TrailerRider
04-18-2012, 08:27 PM
how about: "Has a few minor scratches" or "Has a few small cracks" and "hardly even noticeable". When you get there the "minor scratches" are starting to show through the other side, the "Few small cracks" is the fender frankend back together and the first thing you notice when you walk up is the "hardly even noticeable" things..lol

Or how about the "Fires right up 1st of 2nd kick" when you arrive and it take 30 kicks to get it to start and smokes...

But hey it is a gem in the rough right :)
