A couple weeks ago a guy answered my brothers want ad for a 350x frame. We went to pick it up and discovered he also had an 86 Tecate, as well as many many other things. He told me that he had a bunch of other parts to go with it.

One thing led to another and now its in my garage. It is definitely a project but the price was too good to pass up. I've always been a Honda guy in the past so this will be a nice change of pace.

The biggest thing right now is I have two bottom ends without a stator cover and no cylinder. It is also missing the RH (kickstarter side) radiator shroud. I will be on the hunt for these shortly, so if you have one you would consider selling, pm me.

here's some pics:

Just noticed 4/4 Durablue hubs.. schwing... Those 10" ITP wheels will polish up nice too...

The '84 4/4 pattern is the only Tecate pattern that will allow 8" wheels.. Is the axle extended too? Very nice..

Got a pic of the carb?

good catch! Glad to see another green machine on its way back to glory. Lots of sweet parts in there and A LOT of potential, I will be watching the progress on this build. Really want a Tecate the more I see them around, especially after watching that guy clean up at TF last year in the open drags with a mild built 1st gen Tecate with extended swinger.

Thats the score you were talking about! Very nice! Your heart must have skipped a beat when you first laid eyes on that Calfab. I have all the parts you need (cylinder, stator cover, RH shroud-broken) and more. Let me know when you are ready for them. I think that silencer is from a later model KX250. Dang.. Flat slide Mikuni (TM) Looks to be a 38mm judging by how it fits in the airbox boot.. :D It's too bad you don't have the cylinder.. Wonder what kind of work was done and by who to the cylinder. What kind of pipe and silencers came with it?

it looks like the stock pipe. the only silencer I got with it is the one I posted above, which doesn't look like it will fit.

When I was sorting through parts today, I got to looking at the two heads I have and noticed the domes appear to be different. One is real round looking and the other has a real defined edge

One of them could have been modified for a big bore or you could possibly have KXF head, although the bores do appear to be the same, so Im probably wrong on the KXF idea.

A quick update: I decided to go ahead and rebuild the whole motor. New bearings, seals, gaskets and fresh paint. EZMoney is hooking me up with a cylinder and stator cover so that is 2 pieces of the puzzle solved. For now, I'm kind of at a stand still on engine parts (and money- I still have parts for sale, hint hint :D).

Here is my first attempt at polishing the power-valve adjuster cover. I'll probably, go back and redo it,as there are small imperfections and then top it off with some SS bolts. I'm thinking I'll polish stator cover too once it gets here.

Little bit of an update:

-I have a couple bearings in the transmission to replace. They are sitting on the shelf along with a complete gasket and seal kit.
-Fresh paint should be going on the motor in the next week or so.
-Arrangements have been made to have a new connecting rod kit installed. At that point I can put the bottom end back together.
-Frame and other misc. parts are currently at the powder coater's. I'm hoping to see those back Friday or Monday. I'll post pics when I get it all back.

My focus from there will be to get the swing arm bearings I need and get this back to roller status.

Silver is good ! It will make the KIPS emblem stand out even more IMO.
I tried getting some PJ-1 Yamaha silver last year only to find it has been discontinued from their line up.
I think Tecate-Z bought up all that was available when he heard it was being phased out :)

Last week I was able to get some paint on the bottom end. Today I installed the new bearings and seals, minus the crank bearings and seals. I had one wrong seal in the seal kit I will have to order. :(

On the crank bearings, it doesn't seem like they should be packed with grease, or at least that much. Am I right?

I'll have the frame and misc parts back from p/c tomorrow if I can get there before they close... :Bounce

I dont know anything of this swap but I would love to have fixed pegs. In certain situations (steep dunes) I want to be pushing back against the pegs and they just fold up. Also, like most trike pegs, they are too thin. Good job on the progress, its looking great!!

Thanks. It had a leaky hose that I replaced but the seal head was good, so I just cleaned it all and put in new oil. I polished the shock body and reservoir, then had the spring powder coated. When I got it, it had a White Bros. Suspension decal on it (that I would like to get reproduced). Other than the spring it looks like the oem shock I have. I'm think White Bros. probably added that spring and revalved the shock.

here's my best attept at recreating the decal:

Forks finished up today, installed, along with front hub and wheel. Rear axle is in position but I still need to chase the p/c out of the threads. I think things will move pretty quickly from here. Oh, Can anybody tell me if this is correct- on the front axle, the manual says 94 ft lbs. That seems like an awful lot of torque on the aluminum threads in the fork leg.

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg710/scaled.php?server=710&filename=img2716h.jpg&res=landing

Also, I noticed this Kodak moment while working on the 2nd fork. It's the Tecate, my brothers 350x and my 250R is in the truck because space is too tight in the garage right now. The 350x is in the final stage of getting a 400ex header pipe.

Well she got her first glimpse of sunshine today. I got the p/c cleaned put of the threads on the rear axle carrier and bolted the rear axle into place. I took it off the stand and started mocking up the mojave pegs I will use. They bolt right on but might sit slightly higher than the stockers. At that point, I couldn't help myself so I got the tank, rear fenders and seat down from the over head storage. I set it all into place and took to the saddle for the first time. After a moment of bliss she was begging me to take her out in to the evening sun. After the pictures I got the radiators put on but still need to find a few pieces of hardware.

Over the past few weeks, I got everything I needed to rebuild the brakes all the way around. On the front I used a front master cylinder from a 660 Raptor, so at some point I may add a brake light. My front brake hose was in good shape, just ugly, so I recovered it. Rebuilt both calipers completely. They are they same p/c green as the frame. New rear brake hose and got the rear master rebuilt with a rebuild kit for an LT250r, thanks to some advice from other users here. Today I got fluid in and front and rears bled out. Everything works great! Also got new chain rollers installed and my 18" knobbies put on (basically just shop rollers, getting paddles ASAP). I also picked up a new headlight bulb the other day so I put my headlight assembly on. Its looking like something again! :D

All I really have left is the engine. I Need to get a Stator, clutch kit, throttle cable, reeds, rebuild carb and top end work done.

I will try to get some new pics up soon.

Mate great job with this build, not trying to be negative but please check those main bearings you bought are really c3 high speed bearings and arent just standard ones. Were they bought from ebay?To many ppl are sellin these bearings as crank bearings when they are actually not high speed clearenced bearings, good way of telling is did the flywheel seal have a viton lip on the sealing lip? Just something to look into i dont want you to put this engine togehter and a bearing let go trust me i learnt the hard way. No crank bearing should come loaded with grease.Deffinately best to go genuine here bit more costly but well worth it.

flyingW, After I got the old casing off the front brake hose, I used that chrome XC braided sleeving. It was a PITA to get on but looks pretty good, then I used clear heat shrink tubing and went just a little past the sleeving to hold it in place. It sort of resembles a SS braided line.

Mart, Yes I got the crank bearings off ebay, I can't remember the seller but they are boss bearings. what do you mean by a "viton lip on the sealing lip" Thanks for the heads up.

hondawasaki
08-13-2012, 01:04 AM
your crank beaings should have no seal on the actual bearing, the sealing is done by the crank seals. he's right make sure they have c3 stamped on the bearing. a c3 has looser tolerances and will hold up to the rpm's of the crankshaft. great build so far! loving the green frame!

mart
08-13-2012, 09:24 AM
By saying a sealing lip i dont mean on the bearing i mean the crankshaft seal itself should have a viton lip on the inside (sealing lip of the seal)ive seen heaps of times standard bearings come with the exact same seals just the lip isnt viton.A standard seal will work just wont hold up for as long. This only is for the stator side im talking about.Getting back to the bearings i would deffinately be checking them out.just my 2 cents i really like the work your doing id love to get my hands on a tecate but they are few and far between over here in australia.

I got my clutch kit today and got that installed. Then, I decided to go ahead and put the bottom end back in the frame. I went and got a couple new bolts. One of the things I need to do is to get a new/different throttle cable, the end going into the carb is not right, so I did a little mock up with the cylinder and carb to make sure my cable length was good. Of course I couldn't resist setting on a few other pieces...

I should have a new stator from Ricky Stator tomorrow. top that off with my Swinehart flywheel and a polished cover and the left side will be done! :D

I gave up on finding a good set of original front motor mounts that were in good shape, so I made some out of steel. I guess they didn't turn out bad for my first ones, hand cut and bent. If I was to do it again I would definitely use a plasma cutter. After I had them all done and made sure they fit, I had them powder coated the same color as the frame. I got those installed then finished polishing my stator cover and got that put on. I'll get a pic of that maybe tomorrow.

He blasted it, but yes, it's in the process of becoming silver. I didn't want to leave it bare. Around here it would just corrode the first trip out.

Ok, did some playing around today and can't decide which I like better. The black head or the silver head.

What do you think?

In the final stages of getting this thing done. I have an exhaust system on the way thanks to EZmoney and Nstyle73. The rest of my parts from ILR should be here in the next week. I ordered a new clarke tank from the local bike shop and should have it by the end of the week.

I started looking up hydro-dipping just to see what was possible and stumbled on a very fitting design:

https://www.liquidconcepts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/sdo-0021.jpg

I'm sort of curious to see what it would look like but it might just be too over the top. LOL :D

Also in vinyl wraps there is this:

pretty cool

What would u dip or wrap???

I think that would look horrible to do any of it like that. Just my opinion but after all that work to make it completely red neck and/or ghetto... R u gonna put skulls with red glowing eyes too??

falloutboy

LOL. It would be on the fenders i guess. You're right though. :D

We could come up with some cool graphics if u really wanna do something different but have it look very factory. I think that would be cool. But with how awesome the build is all coming out u just can't cover it in that other stuff. It will become the focal point and people will just notice that wrap stuff right off and not realize the real work into it.

Again just my opinion.

I'm gonna be starting my tecate builds this season so ill be referencing y o u r stuff and probably asking some things.

What is the color used on the motor? Is that semi-gloss and what color code is it. Also what color green did you use. Im also searching the sites for the silver color that came on the 86 T3 frames and swinger. Got any answers for me...thanks

falloutboy
03-01-2013, 08:37 PM
The motor is duplicolor engine paint- satin black (I think) and silver on the top end. The green I used is called 'limelight' with a metal flake top coat from Prismatic powders. The handle bars are 'alien silver' also from prismatic powders.

I think the stock swing arm was just the bare aluminum. Not sure on the original frame color.

Got some parts this week. Hoping to get the last of what I need next week. Pipe from EZMoney came monday. I took that to the powder coater for a coat of high heat gloss black. Got it back today. New clarke tank showed up wednesday. Also had the p/c guy do the brackets the same color as the handle bars.

I'm jealous that you have time to rebuild something back to it's former glory! I think the perfect garage would have a Tecate,Tri-Z and 250r sitting inside and hopefully someday I can make that happen. I already know where a kxt500 swapped Tecate is sitting about 90% intact but my friend will not let it go and would rather see it sit.

Well today was the day. After finishing up all the little stuff this after noon and fighting the water pump cover leaking. Got the water leak fixed. turned the gas on the carb is dumping fuel, but I was able to get it fired up just for a brief second before I shut it off, remembering it was get a little on the late side.

But she lives!! :D I am so happy! Not sure I will be able to sleep much tonight. LOL

Thanks John! I can't wait :D

It is a kx500 Rad valve. Thinking about using the stock air intake elbow without the air box but might have to go to a round clamp on filter. The elbow unit sticks out quite a bit. Looks cool but my leg is against it with my foot on the shifter. Not hear that bad though, glamy. I might try this and see how I like it. If this carb starts giving me problems I will replace it but trying to not spend more than I need to at this point.

Rode this thing for the first time today. Got the 1/4 throttle heat cycle done. Everything seemed to work just as it should. I couldn't help myself though, I had to gas it at least once. Pretty sure I wasn't much past 1/2 throttle for just a second, but damn she's got some power waiting to be unleashed!

Today(Sunday) made a run out in the dunes and burned a whole tank of fuel. Pretty happy with the results. Things I have to do now are to pull clutch cover and fix kick start recoil and fix the oil leak coming from the cover. Change from the 12T to a 13T front sprocket, and finally I need to get some paddle tires. Right now 5th gear feels like 3rd should.

Been a while since I posted, but I got the clutch cover oil leak fixed. I ended up making my own gasket because I got tired of waiting for the one the dealer ordered. Also got a 14T front sprocket put on. I got some 20 haulers on rims from a friend of a friend for cheap. Sold my old hubs and rims and bought some of the 400ex extended hubs. with some ingenuity, I got those on tonight.

Going to do a run with it tomorrow, hoping everything goes well.

Nice Tecate, I'd check the drain plug bolt washer to see if it is in good shape, also the seals often give out, mainly the sprocket countershaft seal.

Went through and made sure all my bolts were still tight. Found some that were loose and 1 one the bolts for the rear gas tank mount missing (it even had lock tite). Also got the rest of the carb parts I needed so now I can finish jetting. It was slobbery rich before. Threw on my knobbies from the R and hoping to get some jetting done tomorrow.

Thanks Glamy! I think I have my main dialed in, need to work on adjusting the needle some. As for the feel of it, I didn't like it at first but getting a little more used to it now. Steering feels heavy compared to the R, plus with the haulers its a little more work to get it to slide around. As for a side by side comparison, The Tecate would walk all over my R right now. A lot of that has do with the R being on the worn out side of things. Agreed they should have counter balanced the engine. The +2 is nice but it still wants to come up. I'm a pretty short guy (5' 6" or so) so I don't feel cramped. I tend to sit closer to the tank on both bikes most of the time.

One thing is for sure. I'm nervous every time I take it out in fear that something will go wrong and it will want more $ from me. :D

Took the Green Machine camping over memorial day weekend. I was very pleased, no troubles at all. Over the course of the weekend, I got my jetting to a point I am pretty happy with.

Also, picked up a prm 6 pack rack. This will allow me to carry extra fuel for those long rides, because she is a thirsty beast. I think it will take me a while to get used to the bigger grab bar.

One thing I loved about my KFX 400 was that Kawasaki Green! It's a color that ages well and just grabs attention from everyone. Where did you put the Oregon OHV sticker at? I have mine on the right lower fork but it sucks having to put that dang thing on, it may be small but it seems almost impossible to put it anywhere without it looking like an eye sore! lol You done a really good job on restoring that fine machine.

I'm about 25 minutes north of coos bay. The OHV sticker is on the inside of the left fender. you can see it when following. the paper says for motorcycles and 3 wheelers to put it on the front fork. They can bite me. It's not going there. lol.

OK, I haven't ever been up that way. We usually go to Gold Beach. I started to put mine in the same location but was worried about it getting torn up from debris coming off the tires. My 250r spent most of its life in California and it still had a Cali sticker on the gas tank but it was where the seat covers the tank.. I don't see how the previous owner got away with it there.

I would be surprised if that was a Clarke tank. I have one on my 250r and although it's white, Clarke makes the tanks in matte colors.

It is a clarke tank. When I first got it, I used the light blue rouge (meant for plastic and acrylic, I believe) on a cotton buffing wheel. That really brought the shine out. Also a wool polishing pad is a quick way to give a nice high shine.

Man rare find. Im 42 and have been big in the 3 wheeler seen since it inception almost, and up here in Canada, I have yet to have laid eyes on a Tecate ever, period. Tons of Honda, Suzuki's and Yammy,s but absolutely NO kawis!! Your lucky...of all the tecates, the 86 is by far the best in all ways. You get an "attaboy"!!!
