here is my grandfather with his 1985 Honda BigRed 250es that he purchased brand new from Milams Honda-Kwasaki in Pine Bluff, Ar. he still has all the original paper work with the trike. the carb is the only thing that has ever been touched on it. it has had the air filter replaced twice, second time was because of rats. it has had regular oil changes and it is still going strong. it currently has a 250sx carb on it and the bigred carb is on my 250sx. keep in mind the atc is not running in the pic, i just told him to sit on the wheeler so i could get a pic of him.

One Q?
It's 11:29 am on the west coast and your post says 3 something pm on the 29th.

Anyway, Love those old timer pix.
I'm sure I'll still have at least a few trikes for the rest of my life.
I've stashed a few super low hour ones as future 'barn finds'.

Gramps said he felt 20 years old again after his first ride in many years.
True time machines.

Thanks for the post.

thanks guys. my grandfather babies this wheeler. it has an oil leak as you can see and he has tried to stop it only for it to return a short time later and he just give up on it and decided to let it leak. it doesnt loose much oil if any between changes. he is saying he is going to get a new 4 wheeler this year and keep the ole bigred around here for yard work thats mostly what it has done its whole life. it has hauled a few deer out of the woods and pulled a tarp around many times loaded with leaves. it sure has been a good wheeler and when he buys a new 4 wheeler, I plan on restoring the bigred.

I bet your Grandpa didn't think too much of the ban either! Good pic!

I wish I still had my Granpdas around. My mother's father had been riding ATV's for years, since about 1985 when the first quads started coming out. He rode an '86 Quadsport from '87 to '03 (I now own that quad and my grandmothers old '88 Quadrunner) then he bought a new Rincon in '03. He taught me how to ride a wheeler when I was a boy of 7. Great memories I still cherish...We lost him in june of '10.

ride red, sorry to hear of your loss man. i know i will miss my grandfather when hes gone. for now i try to spend as much time as possible with him. that bigred is the only off road vehicle he has ever owned. and yes he didnt think a lot of the ban. usually wherever he goes with the bigred he usually winds up being the only 3 wheeler around like on a ride for example or when he goes to the lake in the spring to turkey hunt. it still runs strong and doesnt smoke. (the 20w-50 castrol might have something to do with that) and that is all he has ever ran in it is castrol 20w-50. the metal tank does have a liner in it as it started getting light rust in it about 10 years ago so he put the liner in it to help stop the rust.

I will be restoring it next year or the year after. I will have to gather parts before i start the restore. and Jon boy i think he will use the bigred more than he will the new wheeler just because he has had the bigred so long. Jason8 yes it has been very well taken care of. it has had water in the rear diff 1 time in the 26 years he has owned it. the rear brake is froze up so it no longer works and it has just a touch of front brakes. but he doesnt go fast enough to need brakes. he rides 1st and 2nd gear most of the time he might hit 3rd sometimes. it still even has the kickstart cover on it as most are missing. it really has been a good bike. i rode it today over to my dads house and it ran good like it always has.

oh and the reverse light didnt work for the longest when i was a kid, and i messed with it once when i was about 10 and got the reverse light to work and it has quit working again and hasnt worked for about 5 years. i havent thought of it until just now, could it be something as simple as a bulb? my 250sx reverse light flickers sometimes and thats about it on it lol.

oh and one last thing, the turf buster tires that are on it now, have been on it since about 1990 and they are still going strong(lol) they are somewhat dry rotted but not bad and they still hold air. they just dont grip real well and never have. they suck in the traction department

Fix the oil leak and the fork boots and keep it original. Use it around the yard like he has done for so many years......

thats what I was kinda thinking also Xowner. Its still in good shape. like you see there it needs the oil leak fixed and new fork boots. oh yeah speaking of fork boots one of them is not original. i cant remember which side it was that got changed but it come off of a 85 bigred parts bike. i still have some rear end parts from the parts bigred in the attic......Also this wheeler all its life only sees action in the winter and spring and then the rest of the year it more or less sits up a lot. we keep it on a battery tender to keep the battery hot. the current battery that is in it was purchased back in 2001 from Milams Honda-Kawasaki(which they went out of business 2 years ago), and the old battery is still going strong. I didnt know you could get ten years out of a battery. it is a Yuasa brand battery. its stock size i am guessing its a YTX 12BS? but not sure.

Jason, hes does mean business lol. we had just got done skinning an 8pt buck he had shot that morning(notice the blood on the rear plastic behind him?) if you look close you can see it. he is just about the only one that rides it. I will crank it from time to time and let it run some or i might take it out and ride it a little, but he rides it the most lol.
