Got it all bolted in carb on, wiring. Went to put on the pipe and it dont fit very good. I trimmed the new blue hone I gt going from the esr waterneck to the pump and its tight. That was the FMF pipe my PSI pipe dont look like it will work at all it hits the head. When I had my motor done earlier this year I only tried my esr pipe and it fit fine. Frustrating. And I cant find the clamp that holds the stator wire to the reed block. Will it hurt to take out that one bolt to put that in? Then the other this is I installed a vapor trail tech for rpm, mph, temp and so on and dont know where to hook up the tach lead too. It says to the coil wire of wrap the wire around the spark plug wire? I mssed with it earlier this year and never got it figured out. Anybody use one of these?

Should have more than enough power for me til I get used to it. Hope to have better luck with it this time than the other place that went thru it earlier this year. I dont wish that on anyone. http://www.trailtech.net/75-4010.html Here is the link for the unit I got.

Here is a amateur video my bro in law made of it starting the first time. Much better since then with the OEM cdi back in. Had a Ricks in, it just dont run right with it in. It hurts like hell when it kicks back!

that kick back is not right!!! timing issue
pantera1975
12-30-2011, 11:43 PM
It dont kick back with the oem cdi revs up good and idles. I been starting is in 2-3 kicks cold holding at about 1/4 throttle and its jetted rich for break in yet once in awhile if it fires it will kick back. The ricks electric CDI would kick back all the time hard, would idle and not real responsive. People on trx250r.net have dad issues with aftermarket cdi. Hope its all good.

good to see another successful build, I REALLY want a 310 or bigger ESR kit and am still debating on having the cases bored or just going with a staright bolt in kit. DECISIONS DECISIONS! either way, great work man, your bike is great looking! I checked out trx250r.net like you keep throwing up, looks like their atc sub forum is still jacked up lol

Hey Jeff! I definitely want a first ride report! I don't know how much snow you have over there, but here in NY it seems winter has finally begun to settle in, so when I get mine together in a couple of days I probably won't be able to ride it. Snow and slippery conditions aren't too conducive to jetting and breaking in a new engine. :(
JasonB: I am currently working on my ESR 350 kit as we speak. My main thing was that I wanted to stay with the stock stroke. It seems the general consensus is that when you start getting into stroker cranks reliability can start to decline, mainly with more than a +3 stroker. So I went as big as I could with ESR on a stock stroke. Just wondering, why do you have reservations on getting the cases bored? If it's price, don't let that stop you. Tom at ESR put together a fantastic package deal for me. Got the 350cyl kit with race fuel head, ESR reedblock, ATC5 pipe, silencer, crank seals, case/stator cover/clutch cover gaskets, new exhaust flange o-rings, and a #45 pilot jet. Cost:$1,217 plus shipping. They threw in case boring for free. If I hadn't called and asked if they could make a package deal for the ATC and just went online and ordered everything it would have cost me 3 or 400 more... Just thought I'd throw that out there to give you a little more info to make a decision with.. ;)

Just around my yard in town 1st and 2nd gear. Its got alot of torque. Seem rich on the main but bdt said to leave it rich for now. The FMF pipe is not the best pipe either. I had a esr one and the plating fell off in a half hr of use so I sent it back but that pipe really ripped. I have a PSI HI rev I want to try. My lawn is frozen so I cant really tell how much power there is cuz the tires spin. Thats a 22x7x10 ITP quad cross 6 ply on the front its is 1.5 inch shorter than stock. It looks tuff and only lowered the front 3/4 inch.

I remember you saying that about the ESR pipe. I tried to get an un-finished pipe so I could send it to Dynoport for ceramic coating. Dynoport is just 70 miles away from where I live. But they didn't have any unfinished pipes when my order was put together.. Thing about the trike is the front tire kicks up alot of pebbles and stuff that beats the crap out of the pipe where it's hottest. Ceramic coat is extremely tough and looks almost as good as chrome when they finish it. I still may have it done. Will cost about $125 plus tax and shipping....IF they can strip the chrome, which I'm not sure of. I still went with the ESR pipe because of all the good things I have heard here and on 250r.net about them performance-wise for modded R's. I'll deal with the finish one way or another.....
I'm going to set aside my FMF system for my other '85 build. Will be a mildly modified pump gas burner. Possibly do a 265 National setup on it though, haven't really decided yet. But I have lots of time as my current build has pretty well tapped my trike build budget for now..

ESR's pipe makes good power. There plating wasnt real good. I ran my machine for literally 1/2 hr in the garage and on my yard and then the pipe was hanging up for 6 months and even more plating fell off. I could flake it off with my finger. I just refunded it for now.

Yeah, that sucks when you spend that kind of money on a pipe and the plating is that weak... It's really not a cheap pipe at all. They run almost $150 more than an FMF Gold series.... Main reason I went ahead and got it was to help get max performance on of my 350 for the budget I'm working with.
Oh, did you see my thread over on .net? It's in the "Intake and Fuel" category. I have a mysterious stock 86 cylinder.... Neil said it looks like I have an oversize sleeve that's big enough to punch out to a 310! I've had the stupid thing sitting in my garage for 3 years now and just figured it out something was out of the ordinary with it yesterday.. Guess I'll be using that cyl on my other R! Hee hee!

Here are some pics of when I got the 2 R's in april-may of 2010. The pic in the garage was not long after I got them and the others are in nov of 2010 befor I tore down the 86 R

Dang Jeff. Wish my "other" R was as ready to run as yours.
On mine, I need to cut my swinger out, pivot bolt WILL NOT come out despite all the tricks in my book, father-in-laws book, and a few other people! LOL! So swinger, pivot bolt, handlebars, clutch perch, carrier, probably an axle, rear tires, and get my other engine up and running and she will be ready to rock. And of course the chassis needs to be stripped and either repainted or powdercoated too...
But it's cool because it's the exact R that I bought in 1995 when I was in high school. I sold it a couple years later, (stupid stupid STUPID!) and it made it's was around to 4 other people before I got her back about 3 years ago. It wasn't perfect when I owned it before, but it really got run through the wringer pretty good over the last 12 years I didn't have it. She will rip again though! ... Hopefully in the next year or 2..

Here are some powder coat pics from last winter. I replaced every thing on here. All the bearings, seals, rpm 1+4 axle, carrier, rebuilt the caliaper and master cylinders 100% its all new I guess besides the frame, plastic, wire harness.

Yeah thats my 4 yr old LOL! She hats it its too loud. Them are stock 450R pegs Rath racing 450R heel guards which I have to fad the brackets for the top mount yet and the adapter plates are from Jason Hall on this board. They really look trick. He is the same one that has the invert tripples made for the 250R. I still gotta order some more stainless bolys from McMaster Carr for the motor mounts. I didnt like some of the bolts in the kit I got I wanted them to all be cap screws heads. And the tank shroud bolts were a rounded head that the driver dont fit in real deep so I ordered a bag of 100 bolts for $6.50 and I think the 100 washers were 3 somthing. Really now that I got 1 bolt kit off ebay you can buy bulk from McMaster carr and have enought for 2 trikes for what 1 kit cost. There not polished but 1 ride and washing they all look the same.

very nice R man, inside and out. Hope it is all you expected. I have had R fever lately. would love to find something like what you started with!! few and far between here!! I have a bunch of family in wisconsin, they work on the military base in Tohma?? I thought the same thing about ordering a bunch of bolts from mcmaster. i have ordered from them in the past, and they are very reasonable!!

There isnt much here for 250R's I got mine almost 2 years ago for $1500 each now they would be $2000 on craigs list. Toma is about 2 hrs straight west of here.

bikes lookin good, believe your problem with the rick cdi is that its puttin to much advance it your timing and big bores arent to happy about advanced timing. ive read somewhere that its best to just run the stock cdi like you've done or to retard the timing a bit. i ran my 310 a little on the retarded side with an rpm advance/retard plate. did you ever get your display to work properly ive looked into getting somethin like that just so i can monitor my run times and optimum rpm ranges.

I got the speed sensor wire lenghtend out so it mounts nice on the rear sprocket, the tach I wraped the pick up wire arounf the plug wire 3 times and zip tied it, on It has max temp air temp and current coolant temp. It has a hi limit temp that will make a light come on. IDK what Idle rpm acutally ison a 250r but it says 1200 rpms when its running. I couls snop some pics and post. I've red on trx250r.net that some people can run a ricks and others hav a hard time with them \. I'm gonna get a new coil and CDI shortly. Then I'll have used oem spares.

I spliced the coolant into the hose off the head. I hope you can see how I mounted the speed sensor on the swing arm. I drilled and tapped a hole to bolt it on. Normally it goes on the front wheel. The brackets are temporary I did that last summer on the 1st of 2 rides I went on with the original motor. I debating on doing inverts, I have the forks, caliper and rotor for a 96 or 97 cr I hope are correct. So I didnt get to carried away mounting it yet.
