View Full Version : What to get as a Vintage Trike Hauler?

Beavis-Head

Hey yall,

I’ve been kicking around the idea of taking on a winter project of fixing up some sort of time appropriate trike hauler – older camper, pick up, trailer, ect - something you would have seen hauling trikes around back in the day. Anyone have any ideas or pics of something you may have done? Talking to some of the “trike godfathers” around here 4WD Toyota tuck or an old Winnebago brave came up as ideas...? FYI, the winters are not exactly short here in MI, so I have my share of free time.

Thankx,

B-H

Rampside Corvair.
VW type 2 pickup.
Forward control Ford/Chevy/Dodge van from the 60s.
70s psychedelic shag van with a waterbed, disco ball, and little diamond shaped windows in the sides.

why not go with the 70's van craze? you know 4x4 van with CB, water bed in the back and a mural of scantily clad women fighting a dragon?

EDIT:  same idea at the same time?

A rampside Corvair with a couple US90s in the back would be the sh*t. I recently spotted one on CL locally, til then I had no idea that model existed. A great alternative to a split window VW. Call me strange, but I keep looking for a really clean Suby BRAT to throw my T3 in lol.

There is one on E-Gay now...http://www.ebay.com/itm/1961-CORVAIR-PICKUP-RAMPSIDE-NICE-CLEAN-/270875956185?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&vxp=mtr&hash=item3f117713d9

I'D go with an early El Camino or Rachero, On the Corvairs a Rampside or Corvan with a trailer would be cool. They also made a pickup without a side ramp, very rare!! or a Lakewood wagon!

I second the El Camino. But it seems like to me the big favorite on the 3wheeler nuts in the 80's was the 4x4 mini turcks, Toyotas,Nissans,s-10,Rangers. Just look at a 80's or early 90's 4x4 magizine and see what I'm talking about. Neon green, purple, and pink paint jobs, rollbars and KC lights, put a 3wheeler in the bed and your a total 80's badass! heres a example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7G3by42420

I do know where there is a certain 73 dodge van with a 3 on the tree and a 6 cylinder engine that's in really cherry shape. I've been debating on getting it, since I have a ton of projects already. Install disc brakes in the front (it still has drums all around), go through the brake system, flush all the fluids and install new battery and she should fire right up! Then install a set of deep dish aluminum mags, some fender flares, a side pipe and some of those Pentastar shaped side windows and it should be a trick machine.

In the late 80's and early 90's I always pulled my trikes on a trailer with my early Ford Bronco's. About 10 years ago I got back into Broncos and still have some of the trikes. I should start pulling with them again instead of using the pick up.

I've wanted to do a Type2 Single or Double Cab forever! But the prices went insane on them. Maybe in this crappy economy I can actually get my hands on one now. If I cant, Ive got a couple other ideas...

My original thought would have been the El-Camino, Ranchero, or a Brat, but how about that Rampside? Love it! Never seen one before but instant want. Doubt there's very many in the UK though. Here it would probably be a Brat, or Mazda/Toyota/Datsun 1 ton pickup, maybe a Morris 575 or Leyland Sherpa, or my personal favourite, Tarpan 233 (long story - don't ask!).
Looking at the Rampside on ebay, the pic of the engine looks like an aircooled horizontal opposed like the VW? Yes/no?

Will a honda 110 or bigger even fit in a subaru brat? I had a buddy who had one and you had to be stuipid to ride in those back jump seats! LOL The later brats didn't even have jump seats. You could find an old sedan delivery, but some of them have roof clearance issues. Then you have the old venerable panel truck. There are some pretty cool options. Of course if you have some body skills, you could build the old cadillac camino or the old lincoln ranchero or a toranado type pickup as well. Just depends on whay you can do. Looks like a job for SYKO!

I put a set of those seats in my 88 Toyota back in the day; I use to scare the hell out the guys willing to ride in them as we climbed what 36" Dick Cepeks could handle

:DI think my 350x looks awesome riding in the back of my 66 elcamino with the patina from sitting in the south utah desert for 20 years , the bigblock 4speed makes it real fun, but 20 bucks worth of gas doesnt tast long . I get lots of comments:crazy::wondering most folks ask when i'm gonna paint the elcamino "never" and then ask why i dont get a quad:rolleyes: but lots of ,haven't seen a threewheeler in a long time. I can get the 350 and a 200x in back with the tailgate down.

Nice - I had a 64 El Camino in high school almost 30 years ago with an L79 and M20 Muncie. We could put 2 ATCs in the back with the tailgate up, ditch school, and haul ass to Glamis for a day trip (2 hours away - those were the days).

Here's what I use. Dads old truck, torched coils, rear flip kit, 454 with turbo 400. 10 mpg but infinite smiles per gallon... Especially with open headers. Lol the things you can get away with in the country. And we ain't afraid to scratch it.

Hair Bear,

Yep. Bought the Bronco in Stevenage - whilst I was stationed at RAF Alconbury. I went looking for a Series 2 or Series 3 LR, but found the Bronco in the paper. Snapped it up. That was 1998.

Bought it from a Brit who could not afford the petrol. He had bought it in Colorado and shipped it to the UK. His family cried as I drove it away.

The top photo is of the Bronco in front of my semi-detached in Brampton, Cambs. The bottom photo was last summer in my yard here in Pennsylvania.

Cheers!

:Da highboy would be cool ,but 38's make for a steep ramp for loading, altho i remember seeing two us90's strapped on the roof of a hippy schoolbus back in the day , not sure how they loaded them way up there but, 30 years later i still remember seeing it at the truckstop in s oregon or n cali::wondering:cool:

The Corvair Rampside is just the right size. Used to haul the Honda 90 in the back, drive up the ramp and close it and it fit perfect. The engine is an opposing 6 so you could also haul one on top of it. Still have the rampside but started to put a olds 455 in the back and just haven't worked on it for a while.

yes 6 cyl. horizonyally opposed, early corvairs were 95hp,late model factory turbo 180 hp, built one up onetime for sandrail, estimated 250 hp.

I'd say any square body chev (73-87 body style), short bed stepside... as long as the stepside bed is wide enought.
I knabed this pic from google:

In Nov.1982 my wife totaled our 1980 Datsun King cab truck that looked like this, but blue. I bought it back from the insurance company for $300. It took the insurance check and bought a windsheid, right front fender and a 1983 200x. I worked for 2 days jacking it up and running a logging chain around different parts of the body up over a big lim of a fir tree at my mom and dads to straighten it out enough to put the fender and windshield back in. I took the 200x to the qualifier for the Kingdome race and got second behind Sparks. The Monday after that I call Powroll and asked if they could build me a motor. I took the rest of the insurance money and headed to Oregon to get some HP.I took that truck to the Oklahoma winter national,Dallas Super Cross,So. Cal 5 times with 2 200x's in the back a tool box and tires.30 MPG @ 80mph all day! THE REST IS HISTORY! LOL

There ya have it, right from the horse's mouth, if it were, 3 wheeler racer back in the day perspective about what was being used. I think I would do up a late 70s or early 80s Ford stepside F150 with a straight six and a 4 speed, 4x4, 2-4 inches of lift on 31 or 33s with a roll bar in the back, with a row of KC highlighters across the bar, that right there is my quintinsential trike hauler, just what pops into my head of a time gone by.
