New gaskets and the best way to install them Question

I am tearing down my 185S completely. I will be using new gasket by Vesrha. When I install the new gaskets should I use a compound on them or install them dry?

Now up on the valve cover part I see someone or factory (more then likely factory) used a liquid sealer where there was not a actual gasket. What was it and what should I use there???

valve cover you always use high heat permatex as for the other gaskets as long as the surface is clean u can install gaskets dry. Gasket sealer doesn't hurt but can get messy.
