i can get my hands on a 250sx running with very little needed or a 84 200x with some minor cracks in the plastic, running mint, with new tires. iv done some research and the sx is good for trail riding and has low first gear. as for the x, that requires more handling technique. both are priced as good deals. sx is 600 and the x is 550. i have an old access road behind me and old non used skitter trails and a home made track behind the house (tight turns and straight a ways). my brother and i run big reds on them. so what are your guys opinions and suggestions for the sx and x. these atcs are still fairly new to me so fill me in a little (maintenance, parts, handling, problems). thanks.

That's easy...BOTH

But then again maybe you're not loaded like me(yeah right) in which case I'd go for the SX.

Might consider the X if it was 86/87 but I wouldn't personally hold the 84 200x over the SX

i would like to go for both, but money is tight considering budgets and a project truck. i only want to spend money on one. i ride all year, so snow and mud are a factor on these trails where i live. looking for some pros and cons on both to help me with the decision. even once i get it i cant ride right away because i broke a finger using the big red.

Pros for the SX are the shaft drive(which can also be a con depending on its condition) since it is sealed and keeps mud and dirt from getting at the mechanicals. Also the auto-clutch can be very favourable for heavy mud/snow riding because you can get off the machine and 'help' it out when it's stuck..manual clutch is very difficult to control when you are off the machine pushing!!

The 200x is a great little sport trike..light and nimble but I don't like a chain drive and disc brakes in heavy mud.

The SX is a more utility designed machine since it's the same platform as the 250ES just different chassis.

I have had 250r, 350x and 200x..all great trikes but the one that got the most action was always the SX.

That's my take anyway..

I've had both. The 250SX was much more fun in all aspects. To me the 200x isn't quick enough to justify having a clutch. Maybe my 200x engine was all worn out but the 250sx would outrun it in top speed and in acceleration.

depends on what you want it for. the 200x is purely a sport bike, the sx is kind of a sport utility. if you want a good all around trike for trails and to maybe work around the yard, the sx is definitely the way to go. i have used my sx to pull a car, haul the logsplitter and a trailer full of firewood, then the next weekend hit the trails with it. they are great all around trikes.
however, the 200x prolly handles better, if you're looking to do some sporty riding it may be the way to go, but that's pretty much all it's made to do.

Hands down, the SX! In my area the first gen 200X's are a dime a dozen but a running sx is few and far between. I don't think you'll regret the sx at all

Something must have been wrong with 200.

I would definitely go for the 200, I have never owned a 250sx, but I built one for a friend, and had quite a bit of seat time on it. 250sx's are HEAVY, compared to the 200. I regret selling my 200X, it was piped and jetted and had the 6 speed XR transmission. It would easily outrun a 250. even before I put the 6 speed in.

Parts are also dirt cheap and very plentiful for the 83 - 85 200x. All the 185 - 200cc Honda engines (ATC, ATV, XL and XR dirtbikes) are closely related, and many parts can interchange.

They are quick, nimble little bikes, and you can throw them around with ease. I am 180 lbs, 5', 11'' and it would haul me around easily and topped out at just under 100 km/h. It also will Handle way better than an SX. They have better suspension, better brakes and look better in my opinion when they are done up right.

If you are going to be doing any amount of work get the sx, Reverse and electric start are handy features, but going from a big red to an SX you wont notice much of a difference. If you want to play get the 200x

250 SX is very similar to the (85-87) Big Reds.
If you already have a fully suspended Big Red, buy the 200X.
200X is the sport model and will definitely be more fun on the track.

Either choice is great for the trails. The major factors for your decision are:
200X has a clutch, kickstarter, and is light and nimble.
250SX has electric start and reverse.

I like the older 200X's; I just hate the kickstarter design and it can ruin your whole experience..............

like said before, the sx is more for trail riding and such. the 200x is fast and easier to handle in my opinion. sx's just seem to sit goofy to me and all my friends. also, i'm not sure if this has been a problem for anyone else but 2/2 sx's that my friend's got have had sever back axle problems
