as you can see, i have some little pin holes in the tank that i gotta patch, if i was brave enough i would use a tig welder and patch it them up, but im not that stupid. im going to fill them with bondo for the time being, and someday patch in a new piece. im also going to re do all that i can before winter, and i may pull the motor and re-build it, new wiring, ect. tell me what you think!

The bondo will fall out in no time being soaked with gas...You can cover the hole with JB Weld and then coat the inside of the tank. Lots of threads on this site about cleaning and repairing tanks.

185s isn't close to being rare....they are all over the place...you can get anything you need for them. Your wanting to do a full resto? I have only partially restored my 185s and I have over 1000 bucks in it. This is a hobby that goes from cheap to expensive very fast...for now you may just want to get it in shape to be a rider.

79fordblake: the first time i did use JB weld, and that got soaked with gas and didn't last a year for a patch. thanks for the info! dad paid 350 for it 15 years ago. and wheelz420, i dig that plow.

and i may not do a full resto, i just may go through the motor do a quick re-build and just re-paint it. im going to repaint the whole tank anyway, and a buddy is making the decals for me for free.

No no....JB Weld isn't the fix...Use the JB Weld to fill the hole....then you have to put a coating on the inside of the tank...If you don't the JB Weld will fail. You use the JB Weld to fill the hole so the fuel tank liner you use won't run out of the holes.

Okay, that's why. thanks for the info! is there any areas in these ATC's that are prone to fail after hard riding such as minor jumping, mudding, wheelies, ect. that i should be concerned about?

Also, what are some ways to make it perform better, such as air filters (I've seen sites with K&N filters that are universal to the ATC's and is anyone running this setup???), mufflers, and stuff like those E3 Spark plugs? im not sure if they would be acceptable for a 1 cyl. 3 wheeler.

No not really you can be pretty hard on these things...but if you do big jumps you will do more damage to yourself than the ATC since they don't have full suspension. Possibility of bending the axle on a big jump....but that is easy to replace...and if you do a big jump on a 185s your gonna hurt yourself. Before I started making mine nice...I was pretty hard on it....floated it across ponds and everything else....never tore up anything.

Lots of things to do power wise....... One of my 185's has a 200 top end with a 10.25:1 compression piston, clamp on Uni Air Filter, 200x carburetor, and full DG exhaust. Big difference from stock.
Stick with a D8EA NGK sparkplug.

To give you an idea on value, i just bought a 1983 honda 185s in running condition just no plastics, headlights, taillights for $50. Ive but about $300 into it fixing up the motor and put a bigger cam with new valve jobs.

thanks for the info, now my concern is the vlave on the bottom of the tank broke, the pipe going down did. im thinking i can braze it back togather, but its the white cast, which is total crap for duriblity. do you think this will work, or do i need a new one, and if so, where do i get one? i could go to my local honda dealer, but their prices are insane, a air filter for 20 bucks, that shocked me when i got it.

Well i just remembered the password to this acct! haha. I'm also 1982-Honda-185S. Unna use this one from now on lol.

In other news, I re-did the patch on the tank with JB Wet Weld, That didnt hold, but got some Gas Tank Patch from Fleet Farm and thats Held good for the last few months. Also got the new valve for the bottom off of ebay, installed that as well. I'll upload Pics when i get home later. This spring im gunna go through the Motor and Trans. How hard is it to do that? imma check the clearences and all that and put all new gaskets in. And for the trans will i need a new clutch? Im a noob at small engines/Transmissions. Get me near my trucks 350 and 4L60-E and i know what im doing there. Any help is Much Appreciated!!!

Send a PM to captainweezy if you are looking for any parts. He is trying to liquidate his inventory.
