I took the header pipe off my 86 350x today (used a torch this time and didn't snap my studs off like on my 85:rolleyes:) The only stud that threaded out (same thing happened on the 85) was the top stud near the decompression lever. Both studs the 85,86 were knurled. My question is if I order a replacement stud from Honda will it be knurled? Is it ok to use a stud thats not knurled and just put on some red locktight? Will it hold? The threads seem ok enough to just thread a new stud back in place. Any help is appreciated guys. I plan on ordering a new exhaust tonight on egay and hopfully be riding this weekend.

I used stainless steel and anti-seize on my 350x. The idea is to be able to get them out in the future if you have to.

WOW!! - A friggin amazing. It has been confirmed that once Honde did use a knurling in the head portion, just like I said. I redeem myself......

The new part number does not seem to have the knurling. This was shown from another member (with new studs) who probably didn't believe me.

I'd like to link that other post if I can find it........................

Yep, there knurled you can tell by looking down the thread and seeing the spiraling. So..... will a regular stud hold ok? But on a seperate topic DC What lenght of Helicoils were you using on the 350x heads? I'm gonna order some Helicoils for my 85. I'm thinking 8x1.25x12 is that going to be long enough?(no sick jokes guys this is a family site:lol:)

Get the longest you can get. Those seem fine although I go a bit longer, then red-loctite them in..............

A regular stud holds just fine; Had Honda made theirs of SS, we wouldn't have these issues.
