Just curious- What is the top speed of a 250sx stock? A 1985 in particular if that matters. I am new to the site and didn't see anything in the archives. Thanks.

If I remember my science class correctly, once you go over the edge of the cliff, it should be 32 feet per second! LOL Top speed is probably around 40 miles an hour. Plenty fast enough to hurt when things go wrong. Be careful, wear a helmet.

I'd say around early to mid 50s stock, in good, strong shape. They aren't the fastest around by any means, but they're a very solid trike.

yea i agree right around 40 to 50ish, Always wear a Helmet also.. Top speed could be 10 i would still have mine on.

50.5 mph is what mine'll do on flat surface.

Definitely around the 50mph mark. They're like a more heavy duty 200X almost.

They have some good speed compared to the es,
55mph=sx about 50mph=es
But thats wound all the way out and hurting your poor engine. :(

Both my ES and SX go almost exactly the same speed.
Both have been fully serviced and are completely stock and tuned the same.
When my brother and I go riding we have to travel about 4 miles on gravel road to get to the trails..we race but there is no advantage on either machine.
To say that one is faster than the other isn't accurate.
Now both my machines are '85s also..perhaps some minor difference exists in the 86 or 87.

I have had 3 and 4 wheel atvs all my life. I have always had utility type atvs. Compared to the others I have driven the sx is fastest. Maybe one of you guys can take me on a ride on a 250r or a 350x and change my mind! But 50 mph is plenty fast to me! Fast enough to get you hurt.

I have a OEM speedoemeter on my sx and I hit 100 km/h (about 62 mph),with 22-11-8 tire
My fatcat SX exactly the same

Do have to agree with Todd on his point..
The 'my trike goes this fast' thing is kinda pointless..yeah my 350x is faster than my other trikes, my 250r was faster still..this is why I sold it!!
Didn't need to go that fast..hardly ever ride the 350x for that matter. Wrong kinda trike for the riding I like to do.
When I go riding the most fun I have is in some rocky, muddy, hilly trail and I hardly ever get out of 2nd gear..
How fast do they go in top gear on a flat road..doesn't matter.
'atc500x' 62..nah not believing it!!! On a trike that has a design top speed of what..45-48?? The SX just doesn't have the revs for that!! Your speedo is wacked..try it with GPS and you'll see.

I totally disagree that the es and sx have the same top speed!
First, my friends and I have multiple wheelers (both 250es and 250sx) and the sx pulls out in front on a flat straight road every time.
Next, The SX gearing is completely different, in both the rear end and the tranny in the engine.
Last, we put the sx engine in an es frame, and that wheeler was still the fasted b/c of the tranny gearing.
Oh, and 62 mph is incorrect, closer to mid 50s.
But like the rest said, these wheelers weren't designed for top speed, but for dirt, mud and rocks! :)

Good idea,I will try with the GPS,but since my fatcat use the same setup, with 200x front and 200x speedo gearbox, same rear 22-11-8 tire, and the speedo top to 100km/h....but I will try it and let you know.I'm maybe wrong, but 2 different machine with 2 OEM setup and top to the same speed

If it does run 62, its certainly faster than mine. My 2001 Honda Recon 4 wheeler does @45...I know the sx is slightly faster than that, but not 62!

Both my machines are running stock sized Bear Claws..they run down the road so nose to nose you couldn't possibly make the call..
Now before the SX used to have Duro's on it..she was a bit quicker than the ES. Even though both the Duro's and Bear Claws are both 22x11x8 the size difference between the 2 was huge... Actually slowed the machine down a couple MPH when I put them on..
I suggest your feelings on the speed of the machines are all in the tires..
All the gearing in the trans/differential is to make up for the fact the 2 machines are different weights and have different standard tires sizes.
Everyone is gonna have different results with this variable..

Speedo accuracy has never been high on manufactures standards..
Back 20 years ago when I was in automotive the majors used to calibrate their speedos and they called anything +-10% acceptable..
Now manufacturing standards have changed I think that number has dropped to +-5%..only police cars are certified!!
I would expect the same margin for error on ATV speedos..maybe even more.
Let us know the numbers when you get a chance to run..

I do not agree with your SX and Bigred being the same speed. My Sx is way faster than my es. I clocked my ES at 50 mph, and my sx at 61 mph on a flat paved road. I used a Tomtom GPS to clock it...
Ask Hillbilly200x, myles, and tapper190 how fast my sx is. Hahaha
Maybe your sx is tired.

Then I may owe atc500x an apoligy..let's hear his numbers when they are in!!
Do you mean your ES with the gianormous wheels on it???
Ill take my GPS with my for my next ride to see what my numbers are to compare..
Pretty sure my SX isn't too tired..it can still do this!!! Plus this is the type of riding I like, not speed so it doesn't really matter!!

This is why I put the Bear Claws on!!

This speed of the ES was with my stock 25" Ohtsu tires. Looks like fun Doug. That was my type of riding until I started to see rust inside places that shouldn't have rust.
I mud the hell out of beater bikes / quads though! Haha.
Bigreds been over the rack in thick mud before...
Tough times call for tough decisions. Will be forced to sell my ES soon... :'(

My SX does about 50ish with 20" tires. Thats plenty fast for an SX anyhow...
The ES has a rear end geared for lower speeds and a different transmission.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up. Initially Jason didnt indicate which one and the topic of conversation was currently on the SX at the time.... I see Jason edited his post. I'll shaddap now! :D
FTR: I spent some considerable time in the saddle of an SX a couple summers back, strikes me as a 50mph machine, give or take a MPH or 2

It depends on what tires you use. I had a 1986 250SX with spider trac tires on it.
They were so freakin' wide. Slowed down the bike but they were great in the mud. I would say top end with those tires was about 50.
