What's the best oil for all honda 4 strokes?
I have
1979 110
1983 125m
1985 honda 200ES big red
1978 honda 70
do they all take the same oil or should I put different kinds in them?

i've been running castrol GTX 10w30 for years and never had a single oil related problem.. But, get ready cause this is one of those "my oil is better than yours" threads.. Hopefully not, my vote is for castrol 10w30 or the genuine honda 4 stroke oil! Can't go wrong with either IMHO..

The best oils to use in your machines are HONDA GN4 10w40 oils, you can get them at Honda ATV dealership. I always buy them and that's is best stuffs in mine machines and they are well protected and runs strongs. You must use that Honda GN4 oils because those Honda ATVs they are all wet clutches, were spec. for motorcycle, ATVs uses.

I like AMSOIL Synthetic 10w40 myself..
But it's as much about the filter..OEM only. Tried the cheapos, but the oil gets dirty much faster...
OK, now everybody wait for it...WAIT FOR IT!! The 'F' bomb is gonna go off any time now!!

I use Valvoline ATV 10w-40 in everything from my 250r transmission to the '03 Z400. States is wet clutch safe on the bottle, I have had no trouble.

Mike, tell me you didn't seriously start a thread on oil...
Well, I just tried to search out threads on oil so I could bombard this turd of a thread with a bunch of results obtained from a simple search. Turns out the "new and improved" search feature seems to have taken a dump. What the heck happened to the search?
Choosing a good motor oil is like making an important decision. It requires using your facking brain.
Buy nice, new oil and keep it topped off. Change it regularly. Talk to the parts guy at your local powersports dealer. You'll do just fine.

I agree with Doug about filters. There is some C R A P out there. When it comes to oil I always use the genuine, certified, API, ASTM, ISO 10,000,000 certified slippery kind.

Run what makes you sleep soundly at night. Oil has to meet certain standards before it can go out to the customer, so in theory the cheap $3 bottle of Bargain Brand is the same quality as a top end brand. I personally have had good luck using Valvoline Wet Clutch ATV oils and Honda HP4.

Don't need an air filter but oil quality is a concern. Hmmm

You do know I was talking about oil filters not air right..though a good quality air filter is important.
However not all the trikes have a replaceable filter. 250cc and 350cc in the Honda only..all the 200 and smaller have a screen that you clean and reinstall.

Yes I know you were talking about the oil filter, this guy had a thread started about a 110 not running right. One thing that he had said is there was no air filter on it.

You know, there's tales of old pirates using piss mixed with olive oil in their rigs. Make sure it's EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil though, you don't want to put skanky oil in your machines, it might give them some kind of drive shaft disease, or chain warts.

They all have AGI or CLI or whatever certifications. Which means even Wally World cheapo oil is fine, just change it often. If it has that certification, your good.
If you run a stroked motor and with a cam (lots of $$$$$$), then I recommend some oil with some zinc in it like VR1 (Thank you Swigin) or there is another oil that has zinc in it, I forget the name at this time...
I'll go 2 hard rides or 20 easy cruises between oil changes but that is just what seems to work for me...............
edit - I think it's Shell/Rotella thats good too, I forget.

One more question ho do you know how much oil to put in because I have all the manuals and it never says how much.

Put 1/4 of a quart in and check the dipstick. Add in a bit more and check again. Repeat until there is enough oil to coat the bottom of the dipstick.

Of course this is if you've drained out the oil.

Make sure your oil is for motorcycles. The motorcycle oil is federally allowed to have more PTFEs, slippery components, than car oil. Clean your oil screen or make sure your oil filter is changed. And I'm a firm believer of fresh cheap correct oil beats old, worn out, expensive oil any day. Alot of people like synthetics. Alot of older clutches are not big fans of synthetic oils. Modern day clutches are much more forgiving to synthetics. Synthetics can be too slippery! LOL The limiting factors to most oils aren't the oils, themselves, but the filters. If modern oil filters get too clogged, they will bypass the filter media - BAD!

For proper clutch operation under heavy loads HONDA GN4. Your clutch will love it. I have also had good results with LUCAS ATV semi synthetic, esp. made for wet clutches. For any ATV without a wet clutch ANY motor oil is fine.so the answer to your question, ( for All Honda 4 strokes is Honda GN4. )
Still can't understand why anyone would run an oil not made for wet clutches. We spend $4 a gallon for gas which lasts an hour of riding, but you won't spend $2 more a quart for something that is the life blood of your clutch and can last 10hrs of riding.
Pennywise but dollar stupid

Are you really that friggin lazy? Seriously it is .4752 gallons and since there is 4 quarts in a gallon I think that might be a little less than 2 quarts.
Do you need help figuring which way to turn the dipstick to get it out of the hole?
Remember stupidity is a bannable offense. It says so in the rules.

My manual says 1.8 l, or 1.9 quarts at disassembly. Says 1.1 quarts when you simply drain it.

Motul double ester synthetic, rotella has caused clutch failure for me under high load, Honda gn4. I will occasionally branch out to a yamalube product 15w50 single ester.
As with all older motors, if synthetic goes in, you may see oil leaks.
Synthetic is piece of mind for me.
My main ride, the Polaris, uses specialty fluids in the trans and a different one for each diff.... Oem only.

The manual states 1.43 qt. Start at 1 qt , then add an additional 8-12 ounces. Start a 1 qt 8 oz, then check the dipstick, provided it has one

My fondest memory was of a"how to fix carburetors" tutorial complete with a ballpeen hammer and Vice-Grips.
I believe there may have been some domestic issues sprinkled in here and there as well. Always an interesting topic when he would post.
