View Full Version : Undoing a camo paint job

So i picked up an 83 honda 185s atc recently and the tank and forks are done in a real nice rattlecan camo paint job...:crazy: i was wondering if anybody has a good way to get the old paint off without harming the mint condition red paint, clearcoat and possibly tank graphics underneath.

Try WD-40 first and see if it takes it off. A buddy of mine used it on his car when some fool spray painted all down the side of it.

besides the camo, nice looking wheeler! i would try some wd 40, if worse comes to worse some paint thinner

i picked it up for 50 bucks and some remaining fireworks i had from last 4th. it was stored in a garage for 16 years without being run. a new plug fresh oil, gas and an air filter and runs like new. ill give the wd-40 a try, but i dont have much hope in it because the paint has been on it for so long. ill post the results.

Just take the tank off, send it out to a paint shop for a blast, dent repair and new paint.

It will look like new..

A new set of decals at it will be perfect..

Rest of the trike looks nice, go with it!

I did my 350x this way..couldn't be better

You can try gas firts, you might get lucky. If not, wet sand it lightly with 1000 or 2000 paper until you start to see red (stay away from the edges with the paper!) Then switch to a course buffing compound until all the camo is gone and then a fine buff and wax will have it looking new.

You could always sand it down a little. Use a real fine sand paper and wet sand it just enough to get the camo off. If you want.
If not, use chemicals!

well i gave the wd-40 a try and it didnt even touch the stuff. i was wondering if anybody knows if "goof off" (xylene) not to be confused with "goo Gone" (orange oil) would screw up any of the original stuff (clear coat, paint, grafix)?

You could try it, but Sanding would be your best bet, and you could make it look very nice. Im not sure how strong goof off is.
This may work. Just be careful not to apply too much.

ill try the goof off on the bottom of the tank and see if it softens the paint. thanks for the help. if its too harsh then sanding i will do!

I had gotten road paint on the side of my Jeep... White paint on black Jeep... Pissed me off royally. My painter said to use oven cleaner on it. Let it sit for 20 minutes and power wash it off... Worked like a champ. BUT: I have no idea what it will to to Honda's single stage paint, and it would likely be harsh on the decals....
