View Full Version : Any 200x suspension ideas?

I own various 4 wheelers and last year i finally got my '85 ATC 200X working again. Now I would like to ride it at the track a closer speed to the quads. So the project for the fall is to start with a suspension upgrade. But have no real idea on how / what to do first. Also, I am going to run 18" kenda klaws on a 9 inch rim, the picture has the old 450R tires on it.

Any suggestions for both front and rear suspension setups?

At least get progressive springs in the forks, i'd rebuild both the front forks and rear shock, using heavier oil in the forks and have the rear shock re-valved to your weight and riding style, probably need replace the spring on it as well if it stock and mushy....

I have had stock quad shocks rebuilt. Would the same guys rebuild the rear shock? Also, I am not familiar with the forks setup. Where do i start looking for the progressive forks?

Try dennis kirk for the fork springs.. $75 a pair roughly.. As for the rear shock i've never rebuilt one.. I know NINJA here on the boards does 250r shocks but as far as 200x shocks you'd have to PM him.

For MX racing I recommend 83/84 250r front fork set up which will give you 9" of travel up front and for the rear a +2 swingarm and a heavy duty progressive spring . The stock 200x 6" front suspension just isnt enought for motocross racing no matter what you do to it IMO .

I agree with this, even coming off of small jumps it feels like it just bottoms out way too easily on GOOD shocks. The rear shock at least have it rebuilt. I am running a stock 85 200X shock on mine that was recently rebuilt by the PO and I feel that it's plenty for quadcross style tracks.

I attempted to change out the rear shock, but nothing really worked. So i put the original back on and since it was first time i worked on this atv suspension, i put in the proper bolts. Previous owner had too small. So i put some axle extenders on the rear and 18 inch tires. Ran great for a couple of minutes then quit. Notices fuel filter was empty. So before anymore suspension work need to fix tank/petcock/fuel etc this winter.

I know for a fact that you can run late 90's early 2000's KX 80 (conventional) forks without changing the tripples out, both are 33mm. They will give you a bit newer metalurgy and have 8.3 inches of travel as compared to the 6.5 or so of the stock forks. You will probably need to change the fork springs though I'm not sure since my motor still is apart and I haven't experimented with the leading/trailing axle thing yet to determine which feels best. I got mine off ebay for $47 including shipping. For the front a nice, quality set of bars will always be helpful. I know the dimensions of a 300ex shock will work, but it is a smidge longerwhich will raise the ride height (good or bad you would have to decide). However, a 300ex is kind of an entry level racer so the shockmay only be marginally better even if at all. I'm sticking with the stock one till Ican get the funds to get a raptor shock. Also, it has been said that a raptor 660 shock would fit which is alot better in quality, even without the linckage. As a last idea that you probably never thought of is footpegs. I come from a moto trials background and a wider/better designed pair of footpegs can, and has, been the difference between 1st and 3rd place. I simply found a sheet of aluminum and fabbed up somewider pegs that curve up at the end for more leverage. I put them on with spacers and am considering filling the ends with resin for added strength. Good luck.
BTW, in that first pic what tires do you have on the back? They are the same as on my son's raptor but they don't have a model, they just say Kenda. I would think Kenda would sell more than one type of tire.

In the pictures, the first one at the top are Dunlops off my 450R and the second one (from a day ago) are Kenda Klaws 18 inch on 9 inch rim. The raptor shock is a good idea i might try that after i get the fuel issue fixed. I defintely need better footpegs.

A raptor shock fits? I was thinking it was alot longer but my buddys has one sitting on the shelf. I can give it a try later this week

7. GT Thunder rebuild rear shock
8. number plate replaces light
9. CR85 caliper swap mod

me and you are doing the same project. im going 18 in holeshots on 8in bead locks. a +2 swinger.. motor upgrades... but shock weise... imma get the rear redone and maybe try a 300ex works shock on the rear. but forks... i have no idea

Ok, i test drove the bike friday. I changed to stock 450R tires on old 350X rims. The best pic I have is below. I dont remember being too big for the bike, but I am. However, the ride is not good. I fought the front end too much. I think I need to push the 250R forks up into the trees at least an inch. Also, move handlebars more forward. I let too much pre load out of the rear shock.

Anyone that has done this 250R mod got any tips for dailing in the 250R front better?

I put a 350X front end on my 200X, and I think it's far better than any 250R setup other than an 85-86 250R front end/

i used 250r forks with progressive springs in my first gen x. but i had the triples bored out to accept the 35ml forks. i never felt as if i had "to fight the front end" even with the forks as low in the triples as they would go. when swapping the the triples to r or 350 x to run the 250r forks it messes with the steering geometry, and could be your front end trouble. i hope some one will chime in on that.

in the back i added a hd spring and had the shock rebuilt and valved for improved dampening. i also added the 350x shock resi with an adjustable dampening control.

200x rear suspension upgrades require Big bucks. Ive done work 300ex and a custom rear end...still dont even give you 8" of susension but my new bike will be well over that. nothing is a bolt up, 200x suspension stock is a joke.
