Yeah, amazing how well it cleaned up; judging from the first couple of pics I was thinking it had some serious skin cancer! Looking much more respectable now. :beer

Mine had HEAVY oxidation from heat, and 10+ years in storage, and I took a razor blade, some water, and a LOT of time and patience and cleaned them up nicely. Just have to make sure the blade doesn't start skipping or it'll nick the plastic.

Yea i used a Razor blade before, Sorta scrapping it, Looks like he used something else though, Seems like it worked pretty good. They look new almost

If that's the original tank shroud, it should be an '85, but...tank shrouds are easy to change.

I use fine steel wool (0000) and then polish it with Mother's aluminum wheel polish. Works great on old faded yellow Yamahas. But the first step I do is take it to the carwash and hit it with degreaser and high pressure water.

I used a Stanley blade for about 3 hours, its not perfect but a lot better. I'll spend more time on it in a couple of weeks time, I've got a big quad race to get ready for next weekend.
