Take a look at this rear fender from a 86r. It is suppose to be the original. But it should have the two black squares on each fender right. Does not look like a maier. The seller says its the original. Also the seat says 250r and on 86's its suppose to say ATC. The sellers says since it was a early 86 and they used some of the 85 seats. Has anybody heard of this the build date is 5/85. Bike is stock except for the pipe he is asking $2500 what do you guys think its worth. He says it runs perfect and has had a easy life.
Thanks Jim

That would be the '86 rear fender. You can tell by the embossed warning label center rear behind the seat. The black boxes are number plates and are decals. If the 250r was an 85 and the rear 85 fender was jacked up and he bought a replacement in '86 or later he would have received one of these from Honda to replace it.
Definately an 86 Trike from the looks, with an 85 seat. It was not uncommon for guys to switch the seats due to the height preference. Some liked the lower 85 seat or vice versa as the 86 seat was thicker and taller.
The shroud decals are 86 style, the shock adjustment knob is 86, and the top tripple was painted black in 86 also, engine, swinger, 86 gas cap, all that ect appear 86. Honda did not ship replacement fenders with the black backgrounds that I am aware when replacements were purchased. They came plain. Looks like a pretty nice machine from the pics.
The only thing that confuses me is the 5/85 sticker on the frame. I dont know at what point they considered the build date the next model year.
To tell what year frame you have, the rear tailight should have brackets that bolt to the subframe. That would be an 86 frame.
If there are taillight mounts welded to the frame at the rear then it would be an 85 frame. Maybe someone did a frame or engine swap? Check those mounts to be sure.
With all the repop stuff like decals and plastics available you will have to check the frame to be sure, but engine and swinger, etc are 86.
The seat is not an issue. 86 seats are everywhere if you need one.
What is it worth? well depending on how deep your pocket is and how bad yopu want it.
But I have seen alot worse 250R's be asking alot more than that $2500. It is a fair price for that one, but in this economy, if you got it for $1800-2000 you would be doing well IMO.
But price varies from area to area.

if its an 86 shouldnt the 10th digit in the vin on the neck be a "G" and an 85 would be an "F"

Deff originals. But does anyone see the mint tecates and 86 z?!
Definitely an '86 frame - You can tell by the gusseting around the model year decal. Also, that model year decal looks OEM and in my opinion is original. The very first '86 ATC250Rs were built during May '85, so that bike is from very early in the production run - likely in the first few hundred I would guess. The last 5 digits of the VIN will tell you how early - The lower the number, the earlier it is.
As someone else said - It's an '86 machine with an '85 seat. Value?? I suppose it comes down to supply and demand in your local area - It looks a decent bike all things considered. Maybe one of the East Coasters will chime in and comment as I've no idea on east coast values/supply.
