My 83' 185s runs but hasnt been started in about a month. When i left it i was debating on getting a topend rebuild kit, or just swapping out the engine with a bigger one. I dont know how much i can score a 200s engine that runs good and dont know if it will even fit, but i know that just a topend rebuild will cost me anywhere between i think 120-160 bucks. Overall i dont even know if the 185 even needs a rebuild or not. heres my question. Why isnt the machine giving me the power im expecting? or am i expecting too much? Last year in the winter i was going through snow and sometimes it wouldnt even have enough power to keep the wheels spinning through the snow. if i wanted the tires to spin at all i had to put it in neutral, rev it up, and then shift...but thats not good for it so i didnt do much of anything in the snow. it wouldnt even go up a ditch unless i got a running start. i have different possibilities of the what the problem might be. 1. i got a cheap carb off ebay for it last year, brand new, could there be a difference between the original carb and the new carb that is causing it to lose power? 2. the top end needs a rebuild 3. there is something else wrong in the engine. im only about 130-140 pounds and im almost positive this machine has at least a little bit more to offer for power than what its giving me. any suggestions or comments?

It definitely needs a rebuild if it won't spin in snow. My 125m goes through snow like nothing. A rebuild will be more than 160 bucks. Thats for sure. Does it smoke at all?

well i wasnt going to go for a whole topend rebuild i was just going to do the piston and rings. But i dont have any experience with top ends in the first place so im not sure. it doesnt smoke any, when its running it purs like kitten and theres not clicks or ticks, but the power is the only thing thats missing. but do you think a full topend rebuild would be the way to go?
